"Why do they use a map in the original instead of just using google maps?"
He uses a map in the original because he
used a map in the original. Remember: He's bootstrapping his current reality in the tesseract by doing exactly what he
already did, which is sending latitude and longitude in binary; coordinates he can use to pinpoint NASA's location on a map he already knows he has in his house because he's already yadda yadda yadda. Closed time loops are funky. Also, there's no internet in the future. They barely have enough food. Ain't nobody got time for porn.
Anyways, I'm thinking about this wrong. If your cut won't have any timey-wimey stuff at all, I suppose it doesn't much matter what he's doing with the map, but I do think we should still expect the characters move around and interact with objects in a logical way. The map doesn't have to have anything to do with finding NASA, but there should be
some explanation for it in the scene, in my opinion. Of course it doesn't help Nolan compressed this whole bit down to nine seconds. You don't have much to work with.
I promise I'm not trying to be difficult. Just challenging.
