A Game of Thrones (SPOILER EDITION)

Pretty much, but like I said in the books they all came back to back at the end of the book and there weren't the other scenes sprinkled between them.

Catelyn and Jaime conversation. It's towards the end of A Clash of Kings in the prisons of Riverrun.

The conversation about who wants the throne and the eunuch not wanting it?

Question:
Do you guys think one can read the second book without the first if you have watched the series?
I'm still undecided if I want to just wait for the series or give the books another try

I suppose it's possible. The basics were covered by the show. There's a lot more depth in the books, and there are some things the show didn't touch upon really.

The conversation was the one where she hit him with the rock and they talked about him throwing her son out the window.
In the book Catelyn doesn't suspect him directly until later because she is unawares of what Ned learned about Jaime and Cersei's relationship and children.

Here are my thoughts now that I finally watched the finale.

I agree that the episode was a little slower then last weeks episode, but it would be hard to top that one. I agree that the scene with the old man was more filler than anythin else, but it didn't bother me. I'm not sure who said it above, but it could have been cut down. No need to hammer us over the head.

I actually didn't mind the conversation between (did you say Little Finger and Monk?). I looked at the conversation as more subtextual, what went unsaid as opposed to said. I haven't read the book, but I sense those to are plotting something.

The snot-nosed ki(d)ng is... I want him so dead. The child actor, as are all the children actors, are doing an amazing job. They are a talented bunch.

The finale with the nudity, I agree, didn't feel exploitive at all. It fit with what was happening unlike some preious episodes. I can't wait to see how it plays out. Throughout the entire season I thought it would be more midevil fantasy as opposed to full fledged fantasy with creatures and magic and whatnot, but when we saw Daenaryes sitting there with dragons crawling in her, I thought, "Huh... there be dragons." nice little twist for me.

I have the current four books, and have tried several times to get into the first but always failed. Now that I have a visual aid to get me going I'm going to give the series a try again, because I don't want to wait until next season.

Oh... and when the witch burned I felt bad for her. I actually cringed. She's singing, trying to keep her dignity, and then starts shrieking. It was painful to watch, but like when Daenerys's brother has melted gold poured on his head.

Overall, I'm hooked on this series and cannot wait until the next season starts.

Hey, I'm Swedish, and I've read all books in English, so it should be pretty easy for you. :D

It was the substance. Just seemed to drag for me. :)

Well, I caved and bought the first book. I'm 200 pages in. Thus far I am really amazed just how straight the show is from the book. Especially the dialogue. George RR Martin really is a masterful dialogue writer.

It does make me laugh a little though how abashedly he writes about anything sexual in nature. It is like a little school boy describing "you know, those parts down there." Maybe that is purposeful to try to appeal to as large of an audience as possible. The way I see it though, these are adult fantasy books no matter how you break it down. That doesn't mean it needs to be written in pornographic detail. It just means that I can sense the author's presence when his writing style changes to be suddenly squirmy. It pulls me out of the story.

My original plan was the read each book after the season ends, but I'm pretty hooked now. Not sure I will be able to resist the temptation to read on.

Heh, I didn't ever think I'd hear someone describe the sex in A Song of Ice and Fire as "squirmy." He does use colorful language at times, but the sex has always come across as pretty blunt, though brief (i.e. not focused on too much).

It was definitely a subtle thing I picked up on while reading. The quote above is almost a direct quote from the first book. :) You'll see what I mean next time you read one of his books. You'll remember what I said and laugh. I've ruined it for you. :p

I'm currently reading A Storm of Swords. I read the series about 6 years ago and am re-reading it now. Perhaps it's just early on in the first book, and every now and then where he uses other language, but he most definitely does use plenty of "to the point" descriptions.

"You know nothing, Jon Snow."

:D

I finally picked up the first book (again... for the third time) and am actually making progress this time around. Really enjoying it this time around, and can't wait to catch up.

I need to pick up "A Dance With Dragons". My local bookstore is way too expensive for imports though. Need to visit a bigger city.

I'm almost done with the first book. I think I will not be able to resist reading on into the second book.

BTW, Eddard Stark is the most honorable fool ever. It was even more painful reading his downfall than it was watching. Why in the world would he ever announce his intent to Cersei before being ready to move against her?

I got it from Amazon for like $18. It's pretty massive, especially compared to these "little" paperbacks I have of the first 4.

ASOS is so good (I think more happens in this book than the first 2 combined), I'm half dreading having to go through AFFC before jumping into ADWD. I could skip it if I wanted as I have read it before, but for some reason, even though it was the last one I read the first time through the series, 90% of what I remembered from the series is in the first 3 books. I remember a little from AFFC, but it's very vague and fuzzy.

Could not resist:

249 Swedish crowns feels like a good price for this edition.

Unfortunately, it's getting as good a reviews as the previous one. And this was suppose to be one book? That'd be well over 2000 pages! A 2000 page book that goes nowhere is somewhat saddening.

I love the fact that Sweden has crowns as a currency. It sounds so cool.

That cover looks really good.

Hmm, most of what I had heard of reviews is that it moves things along and starts pointing towards the end of the series.

How many total books now? Have there been any hints of how many total there will be for the series?

Five books now. I think two more.
