The Oscars (Academy Awards, Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globes etc)

Absolutely agree. I just want to point out though that he would've (should've) gotten a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, since according to Academy rules any sequel is considered an Adaption regardless of originality. For example, "Before Sunset" and "Before Midnight" were nominated for Adapted, even though they were original scripts.

I did not know that. That rule seems a bit silly in certain situations like this IMO.

Yeah, I didn't know that either. I could maybe (maybe) see it for a reboot, but for a sequel?

How was Stallone in Creed? It bothers me that he got nominated and no one else from the movie did, but I haven't actually seen the movie.

The idea behind it is that it is based on existing characters and the sequel wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the original movie. I do agree it's kind of arbitrary, but it's not completely bonkers.

He was really great, perhaps his best acting since the first Rocky.

Just got back from seeing 'Creed'. My fist reaction? Those Oscar nominations are some f**king rascist sh*t!

Maybe Academy voters are just over boxing movies? We get a scrappy up-and-coming guy who decides to hit people in the face for a living. Someone hits him in the face harder, and we're sad. A woman or two in his life questions whether his quest to hit people in the face is really all that great, but they hush up eventually, because they're women and this is his man-story. He trains really hard. Finally the big match comes, and he hits the other guy in the face better than he gets hit in the face. And in two years, come back for the sequel - in which he'll get hit in the face pretty bad, train again, and then hit the other guy in the face back even harder!

... Yeah, ethnicity entirely aside, I'd probably nominate a Brooklyn or a Room over all that, too. (And no, I've got no plans to rent Raging Bull, Rocky, or The Fighter.) ;-)

I seriously doubt it. Unless you've got a theory like this for every black actor, director, etc. involved in a movie this year.

^ How many were there, though? It's entirely plausible that Academy voters were hesitant to nominate Elba from Beasts of No Nation given that that was a straight-to-streaming movie, with only a nominal theatrical release, and the whole child soldiering aspect was sure to make a lot of the (old-folks) voters uncomfortable. From what I saw of Straight Outta Compton, that movie was entirely pedestrian. Oscar bait performances like Smith in Concussion gets snubbed all the time, as there's only four nomination slots for leading performance, and in any given year, some are going to be overlooked (that, and the movie hasn't gotten great reviews overall).

The lack of diversity in this year's nominations is unfortunate, but given the even more unfortunate scarcity of minorities in movies overall, I don't find it surprising, or even suspect.

Two years in a row. Regardless of who is to blame, something is wrong when this happens.

Kevin Hart was snubbed for "Get Hard" fer sure.

One of the best performances of the year. I had tears in eyes and could hear people in the theatre round me crying too. Easily the best thing he's done IMO and deserving of the nomination. I don't know if it's better than Mark Rylance in 'Bridge of Spies' though. The two are neck and neck.

Indeed but I don't think this is quite as bad as last year when David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay were snubbed for 'Selma'. Because that wasn't just the performance of last year in one of the best made films of last year, it was in the kind of "triumph over adversity" story that the typical Oscar voter seems to lap up. Seriously? A Martin Luther King film and nothing? (Apart from the awesome song). When the Director of the hideous atrocity that is 'The Imitation Game' was nominated? Come on!

Where as (Playing devil's advocate) I could see the Academy ignoring "Just a boxing movie".

Sure. But in this case, I fault the field of movies made, not the nominations listed.

I haven't yet seen Selma but I agree with TM2YC that if ever there was an Oscar-friendly movie, that was it. And yeah, The Imitation Game was awful.

wish the academy ignored million dollar baby, which was unremarkable.

i want to hear gaith's curmudgeonly take on the passion of the christ. :D

Stallone got me all emotional.
All Mark Rylance do in Bridge of Spies is having a resigned look on his face and delievering good lines of dialogue.
Tom Hanks's character cared about him and I cared about Tom Hanks's character. But honestly I didn't care much about Mark Rylance's character. (maybe that's why it's called supporting role though...!)

Good heavens, what did I do to you that you would wish such boredom on me?! :?

would never wish that torture porn on anybody. . . unless they're watching a subverted fanedited version. ;-)

but if you've already subjected yourself to this mubi, then it would be fun to hear your thoughts, i.e., your ripping it a new one, so to speak. i imagine TPotC would get the gaith shaft more than SW: TFA.

I've only heard great things about that movie but sadly I missed it too and it's not on DVD before the awards  (The day after).
Just got back from Brooklyn and it was fantastic. Highly recommended.

Trumbo I very much want to see.
In fairness Trumbo doesn't seem all that bad (lumped it in with the others out of laziness) but it looks more like a HBO movie to me so I'll catch it when it's on HBO.

You're spot on about Creed by the way.

Now that I've seen all 8 Best Picture nominees, here's how I'd rank them:

1. Mad Max: Fury Road
2. The Revenant
3. Spotlight
4. Bridge of Spies
5. Brooklyn
6. Room
7. The Big Short
8. The Martian

Overall a pretty good set of nominees, and actually quite a bit better than last year's (though I thought last year was a better year for movies in general). Of the 8, I think the first is probably the only one I think should win, but the next five are all certainly worthy of noms, with the next two not being all that far off. Biggest snubs: Star Wars, The Hateful Eight, Creed, Carol, Ex Machina, and Inside Out.

Enough about your holidays, what was the movie like?

Haha, nice. I actually did go to New York for a few days during the holidays (though Manhattan, not Brooklyn) and it was really cool! Oh and the movie's good too.
