In the autumn of 2020, I made a decision. That decision was that I would make my own fanedits of the Star Wars prequels, and that I would fix them up using what I knew about screenwriting and what I read from a famous Greek philosopher named Aristotle. Particularly, his work on poetry known as the Poetics. Since then, I've been editing and re-editing Episode I and even gone back and restructured the ending to give it a three-act structure kind of feel. I've been going back and forth with the color grading, changing it a zillion times over before finally going for a more film-like color grade based on 35mm film trailers I've bought on eBay and 35mm film trailers I've found on YouTube, and even then, there's still so much to learn about color grading. I've been playing around with the sound editing and seeing what I can and can't accomplish, as well as how to deal with sound issues that stick out like a sore thumb. Even now, sound editing is still a wild world for me and some of my latest ideas for how to improve the sound editing are still making me a little anxious.
That doesn't mean that editing Episode I has been a bad time! Far from it! As far as I'm concerned, looking for things to improve with Episode I is a topic that never gets old for me. Even now, I've been entertaining some more ideas related to Episode I (Which I will not mention for the time being in case I decide to scratch the idea entirely, but they are ideas).
Right now, I'm at the finishing touches with my fanedit of Episode I. I'm satisfied with most of it, but I want to change that up to completely satisfied if possible. Plus, I want to make sure I fix up as many issues the Academy might have with it. My hope is that version 3.5 will be my final version (and the one that reaches that all-important 100% complete marker). It's been quite a journey from when I started back in 2020. Below, I've detailed what's been taken care of, and what's still in need of work. Happy reading!
The editing changes
Below is the long, long, LONG list of changes I've made to my Episode I edit. In total, I've cut the film down to 92 minutes. Judging from my blu-ray, I have cut out 45 minutes of footage, and added in 1 minute of deleted footage. As for sources, most of it is the 2011 blu-ray. However, I have used schorman13's Episode I preservation for the Yoda scenes (Because I'll take muppet Yoda over CGI Yoda any day of the week). I also used bryantmh's upscales for the two deleted scenes I've added back in. However, there was no audio track on these files, so I synced the footage up with the DVD Audio track in order to fix this. Hopefully, no one will notice a big difference in audio during those two scenes.
