The War Of The Stars: A New Hope Grindhoused

I've had this problem too. It occurred last weekend and today during the day. Here's the full message (you have to open the window and the column all the way):

By the way, the current file shows this message:
Too many users are currently downloading this file.
So there you go. Incidentally, I'm not just having this problem with this edit, but also JasonN's updated EP 1 edit, and Adywan's color corrected AVCHD Empire.

If using JDownloader, just let it do its thing and go back and try the skipped files later. It will work one of these times. ;)

Exactly. Last weekend I noticed that during the day (US time) jdownloader would pull down 2 or 3 files out of roughly 100-120 files. Then I would start it over and get a few more. At night it seemed to be working normally.

I'll post a detailed review tomorrow - i just wanted to say that it is 2:25 am here and i wanted to go to bed earlier and just take a little sneak peak - a few minutes into this edit

well... it's so great i watched it all through even though my body commanded me to already go to sleep

10/10

Backbackbackbackbackback....... GONE!

TMBTM hits ANOTHER one out of the park! Easily 10/10 and I don't hand those out lightly. In fact, this is only fanedit that "goes to 11". It's one higher.

I didn't think it was possible to top Jaws: Sharksploitation, but here it is. In my review of Jaws: Sharksploitaiton, I compared watching it to Eric Clapton's reaction to seeing Jimi Hendrix play for the first time. After watching The War of the Stars, I'm just speechless. Fanediting is TMBTM's world. The rest of us just live here.

Dammit man, this is why fanediting exists. For every hack and slash editor out there (myself included), THIS is how it's done. Take notes, kids. TMBTM is simply on another level.

Pretty much every frame of The War of the Stars is brilliant.

The shot of the twin suns of Tatooine had me howling.

Genius doesn't begin to describe the cantina scene. I'm a huge fan of the musician featured (no spoilers) and I loved it.

The sound effect when the Strom Trooper hits his head - perfect.

The integration of the deleted and documentary scenes was done brilliantly.

The music, the James Earl Jones lines, R2's subtitles, the blood, the Obi-Wan/Vader fight scene, the ending..... I could go on. All genius.

I only had a few gripes:
1. The grindhouse effects extend into the black bars in the opening shot. A simple error that should've been corrected.
3. The new music added to the Battle of Yavin (right before the first failed shot) felt horribly out of place
2. I can't see any reason to continue fanediting after watching this.

This is the antithesis to Star Wars: Revisited. If Adywan is the geeky straight-A student who stays home on Saturday night to play with his chemistry set, TMBTM is his cool twin brother who scores the winning touchdown and gets all the girls.

We may only be a week in to the new year, but the 2010 Fanedit of the Year competition is over. Thanks for playing everyone.

Why are you still reading this? Go watch it!

Damn, Adabisi. "this time you have gone too far!" :?
Thanks a lot.
And yes, those white lines on the opening shot, I saw them once the whole edit was uploaded and ready to go (they don't seem to run all along the black bars, only the begining of them, but it is a mistake, indeed). I was just lazy to re-encode the whole thing, re-do the DVD and re-upload it. My bad.

I am happy to see that this edit do work for some folks, here and at OT.com.

Now, this is curious.

We have two reviews on polar opposites. One saying it is an "unmitigated failure" and the other saying "In fact, this is only fanedit that "goes to 11".

So, TMBTM, this is on my 'to watch' tonight.

I notice there are more reviews than ratings (come on, guys, it literally takes two seconds...or less!), and that of the measly 4 ratings so far, mine is the only non-10. :p I think I may have given ANH:R a 10/10, but can't think of anything else.

And sure, I use one very well known fan film.
To be perfectly honest, that was the part about The War of the Stars that I liekd the least. I watched it in the workprint edition (even though I'd seen it many times), but skipped it after that. Sorry. :p

Anyway, since this is the Member Reviews section, here's my Member Review:

"I have had the privilege of watching a couple of versions of this and I had a lot of fun doing so each time. I think with this edit, it's definitely a case of going far enough without going too far. The point is to make a massively different version of the movie, and he has succeeded on all fronts. New music, new effects, changes in character traits, etc... The blending of various video sources was successful, too, and not jarring at all. It really reminds me of one of those old Turkish or Italian rip-off films, and that's a big part of the fun! It is not for everyone, but I do think everyone should give it a chance and see what they think. They may just dig it as much as me! :)

As usual, TMBTM has created a product of very high quality and continues to show that he is one of the top faneditors in all the land! I'm going to give it a 9/10 overall, as it is not perfect (I rarely give 10/10 to anything), but a great achievement in so many areas. Highly recommended for anyone who isn't against change."

P.S. Fun to see the "slow" version of Han in the cantina, huh? I refer of course, to the fact that it takes him so long to figure out 2+15.

I was very interested in this edit following the excellent JAWS version that TMBTM offered us. More so for the deleted scenes that were in low quality that could be added to this film given the nature of the grindhousing of the film.

I, like many others have probably watched ANH a hundred odd times, so, am well aware of missing dialogue or things that have been added.

The inclusion of the lost/deleted scenes are most welcome. Yea, sure, most of them are badly acted and seem out of place, but not for this edit. They fit well in there. I don't care that there are missing sound effects and that they turn black and white in places, as that's what I expect from this kind of film.

It's a new experience to see all these early scenes with Biggs to finally understand why Luke has a soft spot for the guy. He's quite instrumental to why Luke's desire to leave the planet and we get some idea, very early on as to what the rebellion is all about. Ordinary people want to join.

There's quite a bit of dialogue cut from this version - almost random stuff - I assume that this was to make the feature shorter? TMBTM - can you explain this?

I really wasn't expecting a scene from Troops to turn up! Really enjoyed the new cantina scene. Seeing Solo chatting up a woman, various new aliens and Neil Young?(Not sure it was him) performing all adds to a new experience of this scene. With the bartender and Greedo using English in, well, English accents made this much grittier and less polished...which again, makes this an interesting experience - but I expect this for this edit.

The added blood and exploding stormtroopers head made me laugh. A few new lines for Vader doesn't work quite so well, but Obi Wan describing Mos Eisley in Peter Serafinowicz's description was another LOL moment. Vader's new eyes were hilarious.

Spoiler:

[spoiler:1fewhwz2]Luke turning up to Leia's detention cell:
Leia: You're a little short
Luke : Huh?
Leia : For a Stormtrooper
Brilliant![/spoiler:1fewhwz2]

New twist on the trench run. Well edited my friend, didn't see that coming.

R2's subtitles - a bit random - perhaps use them a bit more - only some things are subtitled - but I think using the same font as your titles was not a great choice.

My only criticism was choice of music in two scenes:

Escape from the Death Star, it feels a little out of place and runs too long. As mentioned by Adabisi, the Battle of Yavin, again, not so good. It feels a little loud in places, drowns out the dialogue.

However, your choice of score for the end scenes is great. The films final scene - LOL - I wondered if you'd use this somewhere....

Just remembered two things - a certain scene where Leia hands Luke something in the ship and Solo testing a certain metal. Well done sir!

So, gushing muchly, really enjoyed this TMBTM - excellent work. Every Star Wars fan should watch this and not try to take it too seriously. This is fun, like the JAWS edit and I enjoyed much more than I thought I would.

9/10.

PS. Just to clarify something. There are scenes on the Death Star that I wasn't able to place. It shows Vader talking to someone on a communicator and later, two Stormtroopers guarding a lift with one of those sqeaky radio control mini cars on the floor. Where did they come from?

i dont know if you made this video or not but it was really ironic if you didnt and very fitting!! follow the link... you'll be pleasently surprised. :D
No, it was not me.
But to be fair it was that same video that gaves me the idea of my JAWS edit (I gave a link to it in my old JAWS thread) Only I made the entire movie.
And when came the time to think of a second grindhouse movie Star Wars was the obvious choice
(King Kong and Dirty Harry too, but I wanted a movie as well known as JAWS)

I think it would be cool to send the guy who made that grindhouse trailer a copy of each of your edits. I think I'll contact him and direct him to the fanedit.org pages or offer to send him a couple of DVDs.

@ TMBTM: I just noticed that the title on the artwork spine runs bottom to top instead of top to bottom. Is this intentional? I double-checked Jaws Sharksploitation to see if this was also the case with that, but it was not.

Anyway, I can't wait to watch this one. I have a handful of DLC files that are in my "next to download" folder. As soon as i saw this one was available, it jump to the front of the queue and my download has just finished!

The interactive VHS game. Felt a little out of place to me (inserted for the sake of inserting something?), but whatevas.

If you contact him, tell him to send a PM to me. We'll see if he can download them easily or not (downloading from rapidshare is way faster than actualy send a mail from france to U.S, I think.) but if he can't do that and want those edit I guess I could sent him copies, indeed. :)

@: You're right, it's running bottom to top. It's more or less the sens of 90% of the official DVDs I have at home. In fact JAWS was not in the "right" sens I guess! Maybe it's a "country thing" (?), I'll give Boon another version, if needed. thanks for pointing it anyway.

Must be.

The only other place I have seen where the spine title goes bottom to top is on porn...

Hmmm. ;)

well... it happens this or that way. But text from top to bottom is better, because if you have a dvd flat on the desk with the front on top, the spine is correct. Good for heaps of DVDs.
But here is an exampel for an official DVD with bottom to top:

and it is way not the only one.

That can't be an official DVD. Look at all that crazy gibberish!

;)

well, it's only an example, which I searched for after taking a very short look at my DVD collection.
Here is another one:

I was just kidding, Boon. Havin' a little language-based fun is all. :)

I have a few topsy-turvy spines in my collection too.

I'd never thought of the top/bottom thing before. Quickly scanning over my DVD shelf, I don't see any that are "topsy-turvy", but I'm sure there are a few in there somewhere.

Oh, i wasn't suggesting you should offer to send him copies. I'll do that if he can't/doesn't want to do the download thing. No problem.

Yeah, the reason i first checked your Jaws art is because i figured that bottom-to-top thing might be the norm in France. As for bottom-to-top appearing here and there, I do have some CDs in my collection with spines running that way, but I don't think I've seen any DVDs like that. Whatever the case, thanks for whipping up an alternate.

AND... I did watch this last night. Well, for the most part. I did do some skipping ahead here and there -- it was 2:30am afterall. ;) What fun! I loved the Darth Vader treatment, both audio and visual. Not all the lines worked, but there were enough to make me chuckle. The best part was that this project was the perfect venue for addition of the so-called lost scenes. Loved the opening scroll and transition to first scene. And it was really great to see these edited into place. They worked well as we jump from Tatooine to the DS. I did have a few minor niggles, but some were unavoidable. In particular, that third reel of Puggo Grande has those two scratches right in the center of the frame. Besides being distracting, they made it obvious when alternate scenes were cut in since you couldn't replicate the same scratches. I also think R2's subs would have been better in a generic font. And I agree with Mollo that your main titles suffered for not having scratches/dust overlaid. So... some gripes I had were due to things looking too clean. How odd. :?

Regardless, I can't wait to watch this again. Thank you so much TMBTM!
