The Phantom Strikes!

Do not overlook BionicBob's Shadow Strikes!
Very similar in look and feel to Phantom Strikes!

Oh yeah, will do! Freaking love pulp era stuff.
Are there any other "Strikes"?

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I think.

Don't know if BBob is working on any others.

I daresay, he shall respond to this eventually.

Oh man, I loved Nautilus and Nemo in that one! The rest, not so much - so looking forward to what Bionic Bob has done with it!

Thus far, I have only done three.
The Shadow.
The Phantom.
and LXG.

IMO the Shadow Strikes is probably the best of the bunch, and LXG the weakest.

John Carter is not a Strikes edit, though it originally started out that way.

I have considered other potential Strikes! candidates....
The Rocketeer -- but I consider it pretty much perfect, so I do not know what approach I would take.
Dick Tracy -- I have toyed with this idea a few times, remove all the musical numbers, tone down the humour, etc
Flash Gordon -- would love to try this, but it would require mind boggling work in removing the Queen soundtrack and audio rebuilding.
Legend of the Lone Ranger -- again, massive audio rebuilding....
Tarzan -- have always dreamed of doing an Ape Man edit, just never found the right material to use....

Maybe one day... ;-)

Maybe the upcoming Tarzan flick will fulfill your needs.

I tentatively very excited for this flick. Good director and good cast overall. Maybe this time they will get the Ape Man right. :D

One can hope.

I do hope to see you finish your planned Strikes project at some point. Really looking forward to The Shadow if that is considered the best, because the Phantom ... oh man. You should have seen me and my brother, we were floored at how well your edit worked. I just have to congratulate you a job exceedingly well done on that one.

If I may be so bold though, I couldn't help but notice two pulp era heroes missing from your list: Conan and Kull.
Are they something you would consider for the Strikes treatment?

Thank you so much for the kind words.
I am really happy you and brother enjoyed my version of the Phantom so much, as it was fun edit to create.:)

I hadn't thought of them before....lol. While it is true they are pulp heroes, I think in my brain I have always categorized them as "sword & sorcery", while candidates for my Strikes! projects have always been proto-super heroes, the masked mystery men of the genre.

But I grew up loving the works of Robert E. Howard, and now that you mention it, both Conan the Destroyer and Kevin Sorbo's Kull, might be good Strikes! projects as both movies are very retro and have good bones underneath all the silly rubbish.

Or maybe Solomon Kane? A fantastic movie adaptation that very few people have seen....

hhhmmmm.... now you got me thinking..... ;-)

There aren't very many deleted scenes from Solomon Kane to tinker with.

Dick Tracy boasts that astounding seven colour palette, and I would certain caution against removing Sondheim's tunes.
Much of the happenings do occur in a nightclub, after all.

Flash Gordon has the Queen songs, completely out of place in a 30s rendition,
and is also incredibly stupid for fully half the film.
The vibrant colours, however, are spectacular and the only reason why I still view that film.

Flesh Gordon, on the other hand, now there is a fun, retro ride.
Take a lot of cutting, to bring it into the R rated fold.
And you couldn't excise the Great God Porno, he's got the funniest lines!

Glad to have given you some ideas, especially since I too am a huge fan of Robert E. Howard!
While I would be interested in seeing your take on it, don't think there is any way anyone can make Solomon Kane any better. Different for sure, but it is so darn good already that I can't see any way to improve it.

Conan The Destroyer, Kull The Conqueror (and to some extent the 2011 movie) on the other hand, those can with simple measures be greatly improved! And yeah, they seem a perfect fit for your Strikes! series.

I really hope you find the motivaton and time to actually make those happen and Flash Gordon, and the others:)
Because your Strikes! series is so awesome it needs more installments.

holy ballz, @"bionicbob" , have you seen this !

(i'll embed the video when i get home.  and done)

our own BioBob gets a youtube channel accolade from Midnight's Edge.
the video essayist, from the Nordic area he says, gives a retrospective review and history of The Phantom saying the movie is better than what we probably remember and that the character deserved to be treated better than what the studio delivered.

then goes on to say (at about the 17min mark) how BioBob's version is spot on to how the character should have been presented and cleans up the film as a whole.
it was great seeing a positive reference to the site here in a different area of the web.

i didn't go far into the comments, but there are a couple mentions of Bob's FE (ctrl F Mexie Mex & Kikanator96) (and Izamanaick/badscooter starts talking about his spiderman-3 redemption edit for some reason.)

(and the Midnight's Edge channel is pretty decent if you dont mind the slowed down pace of their videos.  especially the dude who does this Phantom review.  i love his voice, puts me in zen.)

so top kudos to you Bionic Bob for a great project that's garnered more positive attention than just from our group here.

WOW!  :D

Just finished watching.   Feel very honoured.

Always thought the original version of the Phantom was a highly underrated fun adventure film, so its nice to see it getting the attention it deserves.  To be mentioned in the same retrospective and to be given such high praise is very flattering.
I will be smiling all day now.  :D

Also, want to shout out to the amazing @"Rogue-theX" whose fan art they displayed during the video.

Just wanted to say THANK YOU to @"MrBadcrumble" for posting a review.  It is always appreciated.  :)

You may want to check out my edit THE SHADOW STRIKES!, as it is 4x3, so it may have that 1:33:1 feeling you are looking for.  Also, it my personal favourite of the Strikes! edits I did.

I wish these classic characters (The Shadow, The Phantom, Doc Savage, etc )got more mainstream attention, as they are the fathers of most current superheroes.   Though they have experienced a bit of pop culture resurgence in the last decade, as Dynamite Entertainment continues to pump some quality pulp hero action, along with Moonstone Publications.  And Doc Savage wild adventures continue under the pen of Will Murray.  In recent novels he has met the Shadow and King Kong, and there is a forthcoming King Kong VS Tarzan due in the spring.

Still, could you imagine a cinematic PulpVerse?   :D

I'm excited to see your Shadow-edit and it's lined up in the queue! These edits of yours truly are giving new life to the movies.

A PulpVerse is a splendid idea! How about on the basis of Dynamite's output, leading up to Masks. Add The Saint for good measure, and finish the entire (first) round of movies with someone mentioning Gotham City.

It could be done. :D

Bob, have you thought about tackling a "Tarzan Strikes!" edit of The Legend of Tarzan?

The challenge would be getting the rights to some key characters.  While some are public domain, many are still controlled by their publishing firms and have very strict rules on how their characters are utilized.

Dynamite's MASKs was a wonderful pulp team up! A dream come true of a who's who of pulpdom....even if a certain bronze adventurer was missing.  Thoroughly enjoyed every issue!

But MASKS 2 -- what the hell was that train wreck?  Horrible.  I don't know if the writer ever even read a pulp novel before based on that dreck.  It was like he was attempted to do his own CRISIS OF INFINITE EARTHS with pulp heroes, but knew nothing about the history of any of the characters.   Such a disappointment.

Shamefully, I must admit I have never read any of The Saint novels, though I did used to watch the Roger Moore and Ian Ogilvy series.

I have ALWAYS wanted to do a Tarzan edit.

And if Legend had come with deleted scenes, I would have jumped all over it.   Though I am not sure if Legend would entirely work as a STRIKES! edit because it is so CGI heavy and my few experiments with CGI in Black and White, it always just rings false to me.

I seriously considered going the STRIKES! route with Tarzan and the Lost City, but two things stopped me.  First, if I remember correctly, I don't think it had a clear center channel and the soundtrack would have to go as it is horrendous.  And two, I could never figure out how to edit the ending, as it turns out Tarzan didn't even need to be there based on the magic protecting Opar.  Sort of like Raiders, even Indy had never gotten involved, everything would have still turned out all right ... lol.

On occasion I have toyed with the idea of editing the final two Gordon Scott Tarzan movies together in to a jungle epic, since they are still the gold standard of Tarzan films for me.  :D

If you can pardon the further diversion off topic...

I recently got 1986's 'Biggles: Adventures In Time' on blu-ray because I loved it as a child... but holy f**k had I forgotten the terrible bits. I'm only halfway through a re-watch but the idea of "Striking" the film into something better came almost immediately to me. The real dogfight footage is still thrilling and "boys own" stuff but the none-more-80s (in a bad way) synth score could be a real problem.
