STAR WARS: Last Jedi - Anti-Cringe-Cut

This seems to be going well. Creative trailer! ;)

Thanks guys!

After finally finishing the cutting-part, I decided to bring some color back into the movie.  ;)

Leia's face is not as pale anymore:

Poe is rocking a more dazzling jacket now:

More green for the grass and more blue for the ocean:

C3PO looks more shiny now:

Kylo's lightsaber needed more red:

Oh and speaking of color correction...

Color correction #1:

Color correction #2 (light saber color):

^^^^I can't quite tell if you're trying to colour correct the picture, or make his lightsaber green.

If you are trying to make the lightsaber green, are you applying colour correction to the whole shot or just the lightsaber? Cos if you're doing it to the whole shot, that's probably not going to work.

The first pic show's the color correction in general, which I applied to the whole movie, as you can see in the post above it. You'll probably notice, that the blue of the light saber is a bit more intense.

In the second pic I wanted to demonstrate, that I changed the color of Luke's light saber. This "color correction" was only applied to the light saber.

Here is a wide shot:

Even though in my cut Luke is still force projecting himself to Crait, I didn't like that the movie gave it away early with his blue light saber, that was just destroyed moments ago. That's why I decided to change the color.

If you're looking to colour correction the film, might I suggest Dr Dre's own LUT? It's a touch subtler than your own, fixing things like Leia's skin tone and the reds look better. It also removes most of the green/yellow tint that is especially present on Crait and in the sky on Ahch To.  https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-Last-Jedi-regrade-One-LUT-to-rule-them-all/id/60297

And also, your green lightsaber doesn't look the greatest, but there is always room for improvement.

Thanks for the LUT suggestion Bobson, I'll try it out.

And regarding the light saber, I'm still tweaking but it's harder than I thought.

This is how it looks right now:

But if it takes up too much time, I'll consider dropping the color change for the light saber.

That's looking a lot better, and quite good. Are you able to post a clip of it in motion?

I think you can still see the blue edge around the lightsaber, and dealing with the blue light on the ground/Luke/Kylo will be very difficult. Imo you should leave it out - if you're not focusing on the colour it's a very normal human reaction to not even notice (it's obvious after the fact, but wouldn't be for a normal first time viewer).

I managed to get rid of the blue edge around the saber but there is a lot of blue light on Luke's face, especially after Luke and Kylo switch sides in the fight, and getting rid of that is a real pain in my a** right now  :dodgy:

As much as I would like to change the color it's becoming too much work for a very short scene. I think I'll follow your advice and leave that one out...

The exact same reason I went with the white saber idea. You could use a solid color mask and set it to a feathered transparency over the area of the blue glow. I used this method to out some flesh tones back  into his face.

The problem is mainly with the shots where the saber is right in front of his face:

Here's one way you could do it with masking/rotoscoping.

Layer 1: solid green color (feathered mask set to a transparency to cover the blade and glow)
Layer 2: desaturated video (feathered mask to only desaturate the area of the glow)
Layer 3: original video

Sounds great , but how does this tie in to him being dead in ep9?

Watch too much saturation/contrast …. then the colors are equally unrealistic.

Thanks for the tipps @DigModiFicaTion! I already managed to do it using two layers though:

We don't know that for sure. There are some crazy theories out there...  ;)
