RoboCop Reboot

To me, that trailer looks just as bad as I thought it would be. Right now, this seems like another stupid, pointless, pathetic remake.

looks better - but a little bit...generic. The distant Dad. The free will trope. One man vs the system. Because his priorities are surely better than the guys looking at the big picture?)
Casino Royale was great with M's line about "one bomb-maker". Bond was wrong - he didn't get the bigger picture. Individual = good, system = bad - it's more nuanced than that....!
But I like they've taken this in a different direction, rather than a remake of the original.

this doesn't look that bad actually, but I don't see what it is needed.

Talk about missing the mark. And the point.

The trailer shows enough of the plot that i could probably do a review of it.

trailer was Meh, the new "clean" way of killing Murphy is BS. Do it right or don't make the movie. Robocop Once had an X rating because of the gore. Now you just blow him up in a car.

No thanks. Wait for BD for this one

Read this reaction to the trailer and I couldn't have said it better, so Ill just quote it

I'm positive the social commentary (the subtext, symbolism, irony and wit) will be totally removed, replaced by more acshun and spolsions... "Today's film goers don't want to think about life, they want to escape from reality, give 'em some more titties and another car chase."

Well... moar titties certainly couldn't hurt.

Maybe they could change the title to Robot Cop Mobile Police, or Super fuzz, or Knock Off Cop, or Halloween Costume Nut, or Mr. Glass Strikes!, or Man In Suit.

Just some ideas.

You Catch On Pretty Quick. ;-)

I didn't see the Total Recall remake, but there I could see the point of a remake, because Arnold. And the fact that Verhoeven's style (which I usually love, even in Showgirls) is almost uniquely unsuited to Philip K. Dick material.

But RoboCop is perfect the way it is. The stilted style, the meta-textual humour, the silly violence, the satire - it's the perfect Verhoeven film, and a one of a kind American action classic made by a weird European (like a surprising number of American classics). RoboCop is everything good about the 80s in one package, and when the otherwise undependable Ken Russell called it the best sci-fi since Metropolis, I'm almost inclined to agree (although, well, 2001: A Space Odyssey). This is what the remake has to live up to.

The remake might be good, but it will not be great. It's based on the faulty premise that the story is what made the original great, and thus pointless.

okay, at first I wasn't impressed with the idea of Robocop being remade. grew up watching the original, the sequels, and the tv series and miniseries. however, this definitely has peaked my interest. (I didn't mind Total Recall remake either. I actually enjoyed it a bit.) this looks like it'll be something that I would enjoy to watch. plus it's got Michael Keaton, that's a little bit of win there. pretty interested in seeing how they update it a bit as well.

interesting interview with weller regarding the reboot

my two all time favourite films are ghostbuster and robocop i'd have to toss a coin to give you an answer to which is my favourite. so this is the first reboot or remake that before even seeing the film i'm dismissing. i'd never heard of the director before so i checked out a film called elite squad and i was very impressed and i could see why he was chosen. however the remake has been given a pg-13 which i find disappointing given that elite squad was a very violent movie much in tone with the original robocop film. i'm not totally won over by the trailer but there's enough promise in there to make me curious to see the film.

the black suit doesn't look as good as the updated older version and i'm still not won over by the hand, what's that about?

I don't like the black suit.
I don't like the movement at 1:50. Are we in a manga or what?
What I liked in the original Robocop was the fact he's just not meant to have flexible movements.
He does not need it, he's just like a tank that slowly kills his ennemies one by one. That's also what visualy makes him a "machine".
Here he looks more like a super cop, not so much a robot cop.

I like... well I guess I like that Keaton is in it.
