Flash Gordon - Saviour of the Earth Edition

It should be there. Just had to adjust the font ever so slightly! ;-)

THanks a lot for the banner STANKPAC :)

A new DLC for mediafire links has been updated on .info for anyone who might be interested. Thanks to Neglify for the help with that.

Based on Havok's introduction, it sounds like we have kindred love affair with Flash Gordon. I was 10 when I saw the original, there was only one other person in the theatre besides my parents. It was like having my own private screening. And I loved every minute of it! At that age, I did not really notice the "cheese". To me, it was the ultimate in Space Opera Spectacle! Over the years, Flash Gordon has remained my all time favorite Guilty Pleasure Movie and I watch it repeatedly.

But I have always wondered if there was a way to tone the movie down a bit and bring it more in line with its comic strip origins or the Buster Crabbe serials?

And now I have my answer. And it is a definitive YES!

The movie is still silly and loaded with bad acting but the extreme camp is mercifully toned down or completely removed. The core plot remains intact and still plays well.

I love the menu design!

The cutting of Ming from the beginning is very smart, adds bit more drama and mystery. Though the cut from the starfield to opening credits is very abrupt, it should have been crossed faded or transitioned smoother.

Sometimes when you know a film so intimately, it is hard judge if all the cuts are seamless or not. Unfortunately for me, there are many such scenes throughout -- Ming's Palace and football sequence is an example of one of them for me.

As others have noted, there are a few audio dips and fades that are noticeable.

I was not a fan of the colour correction. Too much red for my tastes, particularly during the Earth scenes.

I think Havok successfully achieved his goals and has created a solid edit. I still prefer the original but this is a fast paced, entertaining alternate cut that I think Flash Gordon fans should definitely check out.
:)

This is still my go to version of Flash Gordon. I have recommended it many times, always to great reviews.

I am glad you enjoyed the experience bob :) - And thanks for taking the time to write a review!

Yup, I am aware of a couple of somewhat (slightly?) noticeable audio fades, sadly the computer in which I made this edit is no longer available so going in for another pass would mean starting from scratch again... :(

And thanks for the kind words WyndorfDave!

It was a fun ride. Since you are obviously a big Flash Gordon fan, have you ever considered editing the cartoon series into a movie since the Filmation tv movie seems to be forever unavailable?

Now that would be an interesting project, but AFAIK there are no reasonable quality releases of the cartoon - not even a crappy first generation DVD set to fall back on... perhaps I just havent looked close enough, are you aware of any proper source?

YEP! :)

The complete cartoon series was released on DVD in 2006. Not certain if is still in print, but there are lots of sellers on Amazon if you wanted to pick up a copy. It is a great package with tons of bonus material. Sometimes, on an early Saturday morning when the family is still in bed, I will tip toe down to the BionicCave and put in a disc and relive my childhood. The first season is FANTASTIC, way beyond what was considered normal for Saturday morning kid shows back in those days. Smartly written, feverishly loyal to the Alex Raymond cartoon strip -- the entire first season is one long serial adventure. As for season two.... well, it was dumbed down considerably... plus they added a cute baby alien dragon...????

Oh wow, I completely missed that release. It does seem to be out of print and appears to be pretty scarce ... Amazon even pays over $30 for a used set, which is quite a lot for them to pay for any sort of used item... But perhaps I'll get lucky and find it at a bargain bin somewhere :)
