Flash (CW)

@"musiced921" I get where your coming from, and I understand a lot of people feeling this way as well. However, I think aside from budget, there's something to be said about scheduling. All the CW shows start up around the same time, and it would be very awkward unfair to audiences who watch the other show's but not the Flash (for some reason) to drop everyone into a new reality that doesn't match up with the previous season.

Also, who's to say that Flashpoint is over? The animated adaptation is called  "Flashpoint Paradox," and the next episode is called "Paradox." As was stated in that story, Barry went so fast that he shattered the "time barrier," creating ripple effects throughout history and causing changes throughout history. Joe and Iris benign estranged is one, I'm guessing the creation of Dr. Alchemy is another. Hopefully they'll go more into this during the big CW crossover event (I would love it if Barry indirectly caused the Death of Superman via Dr. Alchemy introducing Kryptonite into the Arrowverse).

Still, I'll admit, it would have been interesting if Flash just did a Flashpoint timeline, but all the other shows were on the regular timeline and the Crossover with the other shows would center around "Where's Barry?" Oh well. Hopefully it'll pickup.

You bring up some valid points sir.  I have to say that I hadn't thought about the audiences that only watch a particular show and not the full set of CW superhero shows.  For something as big as this, I still think there could've at least been a two hour premiere that covered a far worse timeline and then ended with Barry going back and resetting things instead of the major rush job they did.

Great points @Nic and @"musiced921" ...

I had to watch the premiere twice to figure out how I felt about it... lol
On first viewing, I gave it a 6 out of 10.   On second viewing, I bumped it up to an 7.5.  :p

I never expected a full on adaptation of the Flashpoint comic (especially as Nic pointed out as a season premiere... if they had saved it for the midseason 4 show crossover... then yeah, it might have worked), so the show was not a "huge" disappointment for me but it did throw me off on first viewing.

As Ed pointed out, the Flashpoint tvland does not seem that bad, most of the characters seem happy (with the exception of Joe), thus Barry's apparent sudden decision to free the Reverse Flash and restore the timeline seemed very unearned.

(...though I think it is clear that for some reason Kid Flash's powers were not working properly, he was not healing, thus suggesting his wound was fatal...)

Upon second viewing, I appreciated the story more because it is an intimate story, a story about being selfish.   As Thawne said, Barry is the villain of this particular story.   Barry changes time and alters the history of his friends (and maybe the world, we really don't know) for his own selfish needs.  But when he gets his happy family back, he is still not quite content.  He tries to shape the world to his will, trying to recreate Team Flash by recruiting Cisco and Kaitlyn against their wills.  Barry wants his cake and eat it too.

So this aspect of the story I really liked.

But I agree with Ed, the story was far too rushed and certainly should have been a two parter.  As I said, I didn't buy Barry's sudden decision to restore the timeline.   There needed to be more of build-up, more of Barry seeing the cracks in his new perfect world, of Barry realizing he made a terrible mistake.... right now it feels more like Barry is just afraid of losing his memories of his previous life than concern for Wally.... as I said it comes across more as selfish motivation than selfLESS.

It might have worked better if Iris had either died or become something very dark and broken, thus driving Barry once again to make the choice between the two women he loves most..... save Iris by allowing his mother to be murdered.

But I think the rest of the season will deal with the fallout and consequences of Barry's selfish decisions, as it seems clear the universe Barry restored is not exactly the same one he left.   The newest trailer shows lots of promise.....

Quite a few plot holes that I just had a tough time suspending disbelief on (Barry's living there 3 months and JUST figured out Cisco is a billionaire tech mogul, Barry even having powers, time wraiths?).

Agreed, big plot point issues.

And the rules for Time Travel on the Flash are timey-whimey at best.

But for Barry to exist with his powers and memories intact in the new timeline, that means he had to "erase" the Barry that grew up happy with two living parents... much the same way the second Reverse Flash evaporated in the episode.

So essentially, Barry MURDERED his own doppleganger in order to experience his new Flashpoint universe happiness.

I also thought it was telling how Barry kept Thawne prisoner just as Zoom kept Garrick.  Maybe Zoom was right, he and Barry are not that different?

Now that was more like it!!!!   :D

Everything I wanted in the season three premiere but didn't get, was right here in the next episode!

Great character moments.  A great new mysterious villain.  Consequences and acceptance of responsibility.
And that kiss at the end.  :p

Everything felt earned and paid off nicely!   All concerns and doubts from last week have been washed away.  (for now LOL)

So this is my question regarding this season so far: If Eobard Thawne's main goal was using Barry to get back home after losing his connection to the Speed Force, but Thawne still has his Speed Force connection after settling the timeline straight in the season 3 premiere, how is it that this timeline even exists?.

If he never lost his connection, he never got stuck in the past. Not being stuck in the past means he never had to destroy the particle accelerator, Barry never got his powers early, etc. Honestly, it woul've made more sense if all future appearances by the Reverse-Flash (like Legends of Tomorrow) were by a Time Remnant.

I really liked the first three eps. I can see why some wanted "Flashpoint" to be darker and more dramatic, and it certainly didn't seem all that bad, but I kinkda liked that Barry decided he had to set things back even so, partly because this means the writers can still use the nightmare alternative reality at a future time. And the stuff about the 'restored' present not being exactly the same is a nice touch (albeit a bad knock for the guy who plays Cisco's brother).

Bottom line, I'm still totally on board with the show. And I love that we finally got to see a solid bit of Matt Letscher as the real Eobard Thawne. :D

When are they going to get to the real issue caused by Flashpoint?

^ Bwah ha ha ha!!!!  :p

Gotta say, loving this season now, even though it sort of feels like they are following the playbook from season one and two a bit too much in structure and arc.

Killer Frost directed by Kevin Smith was a jammed packed episode and very entertaining.  I thought Caitlin"s arc worked well and I love it was Barry's faith in her that brought her back from the dark side.  Yeah, it was corny and cheesy, but it worked for me.  I think that is what I love most about these shows, they embrace their corniness and good old comic book silliness, they are not ashamed of being shows about heroes in costumes doing fantastical things, all the while having heart and hope deep rooted into the story telling.

Flashpoint continues to impact Team Flash.... the rift between Cisco and Barry carried a lot of weight and it will be interesting to see how they explore it.

Savitar turned out to be pretty creepy.   At first I thought, NoOOOOOOO... another speedster big bad.... but I gotta admit, it was pretty powerful and intense debut.  The Alchemy reveal however was very anti-climatic and I don't really think it was a surprise to anyone.

Anyway, next week the INVASION begins....

Awesome, awesome and more awesome!
Fantastic winter break/x-mas episode!!!

Loved Hamill's cameo!!!
He is essentially playing (finally!!!) a live action Joker, from the make up and costume -- what can I say?  Except AWESOME!!!!!  :D

Cisco: "My brother died! Barry, I demand you change the timeline to bring him back for my personal gain!"

Two weeks later...

Cisco: "Barry, how dare you even think of changing the timeline for personal gain! You're not worthy of my friendship!"

That's cause Cisco learned first hand during Invasion the price of altering the timeline.

Sometimes I really wish I had some... any.... musical ability....  :p

Holy Planet of the Apes!!!!!

Did anyone watch last night?!?!?!!!   Pure comic book giddiness Flash fans!!!!
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVSpGxPSkJ4

Yes, there was some silly writing non-sense about keeping Jesse Quick on Earth One which really makes no sense, and Grodd's betrayal was sooooo obvious lol, but still a fantastically fun episode.

And it continues next week as the Gorillas invade Earth One!!

Side note observation, Vancouver's historic, record breaking wet, cold, snowy winter must be really impacting the Arrowverse shows production this season..... they are not even attempting to hide the heavy rain anymore in many scenes... lol.  Well, at least they attempted an explanation why tropical Africa is so cold and wet on the Flash.  :D

I'm still liking the show, but I really hope Wally gets written out at the end of the season, whether by death, or going to engineering school, or losing his powers or whatever. He's a boring character who spends most of his time whining and moping, and the actor isn't all that and a bag of chips, either. (Not that it was his fault, but his "romantic" dialogue with Jessie while staying behind during the Gorilla City expedition was Attack of the Clones-level writing/chemistry awfulness.) Tom Felton's Julian is a much more engaging addition to the team, even if he isn't likely to be kept on.

... Of course, if the writers really loved me, they'd write both Wally and Iris out. :D

I've found this season to be a bit of a chore.  What was my top go-to show out of the Arrowverse has become the bottom with Arrow back up to the #1 spot.  I'm just tired of every season Barry having to fight the big bad speedster.  Grodd could've been a season long big bad without having to be seen in every episode.  Savitar is just meh IMO.

So the big hyped musical crossover episode happened last night....
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvWxlnJZhng

For me, it was pure cheesy fun. :D

Even though I too tire of another season long Speedster Big Bad, Flash continues to be my favourite Arrowverse show.  It is still the most comic booky faithful show ever made on either big screen or small, and I just love the chemistry of the cast.  I really like Wally and Iris has evolved into a much stronger character this year.  I actually believe in the love story of Barry and Iris, unlike in some other shows.

Mostly agree.  The musical should've had some more songs and Meister's goal for them was a little strange.  I think Batman The Brave and the Bold handled Music Meister better and it kind of left more to be desired.  Maybe next time?

Flash to me has gotten stale this season.  I've found it to be a bit of a chore I had to say.  Another speedster, too much brooding, putting all of their eggs on Savitar instead of making use of having Grodd or another rogue as the main villain.  I love Julian on the show though!

Flash isn't my number one this year unfortunately.  Last year it was, but Arrow has been bringing it big time, which by the way:

(sorry for the big size)

Alas, I didn't find the musical ep (or roughly a half of it, anyway) worth the wait at all. Even the above friendship song was badly marred by the weird shade thrown at Clark. Is Kara really still pissy about his relative popularity? If so, lame. And Barry saying he doesn't find him impressive, even being tongue-in-cheek? Seemed out of character. Meanwhile, the Iris and Mon-El dream characters (and Mon-El isn't a Kryptonian? Huh?) had zero development, and the number with the dads was pointless because we don't care about any of them, none of whom are real. Meanwhile, Barry and Kara look like total dolts for thinking there wouldn't be a gang war. Has Barry even seen that West Side Story musical he referenced? Of course rival gangs are going to have a fight! Instead of telling a half-assed and pointless story, the whole experience should have been contained to the theater, and should have resolved with a song, not some random shootout in which the stupid lovers don't even appear. Meanwhile, the Earth-1 hero battle was the most interesting thing to happen after the big nightclub number by far, which was rather unfortunate.

Also: the Music Meister said Barry and Kara had to finish the musical to escape, but if that's true, what happened to the lovers? That's not an ending to the musical at all! This is shit writing, folks, and we deserve better.

And then we got that Barry solo at the end, which, apart from the song itself being hot, stinking garbage, featured singing which was badly mismatched with Gustin's blocking. (For instance: as his voice soared, Barry looked downwards, thereby constricting his windpipe.) The cumulative effect was jarring, amateurish, and lame.

In sum: As with the "Invasion!" crossover, I must applaud the ambition, but place a whoopee cushion on the execution's seat. Meanwhile, Barry/Iris still sucks.
