Guess I'm in the minority in that I have always thought the Vader/Kenobi battle was pretty lackluster. Even as a kid, I could give 2 craps about that... I wanted to see what Luke/Han/Leia were doing! "Why did they cut away from that?!" was basically my thinking. That is how much the fight lacked engagement.
Now that we have more of those characters' stories on film, that is an incredibly important moment. And it's important not only from a dramatic point of view...it's important because it's a 2nd chance for "Anakin" to show up his master. And it's important that he actually not do that, in a way. The original fight, Kenobi looks like a doddering grandpa compared to a strong, fearsome badass. His disappearing act always seemed like a copout. It's why Sir Guinness couldn't take the part seriously (until the accolades came in) and called him a "wizard". He meant it in a derisive way, not as a handy metaphor.
I say all that to say that I think rose-colored glasses could blind people to that original scene. I'm sorry, but it is lacking in almost every way. The Revisited fan-edit does what it can to fix the technical issues, but it's still needs to be expanded, to have more weight, and to have more energy. Yes, this cut is too dynamic, and like the Duel of the Fates, it would threaten to steal the movie. But I'd love to see a toned down version of it put into the film. When I show the movies to people who haven't seen them, I almost have to look away in embarrassment at that point. To a lot of people who didn't grow up with those films... that scene is just bad.
