The 50,000 Movie Challenge

Personally, I'd far prefer quality to quantity.
This is how the number of rated films is going downhill over the years like since 2009. Let's look at the figures.

I discovered several numbers that are not on the list on the net which was last updated over a decade ago. Here are these:

2940 Dizzy Doctors (short)
3911 Tassels in the Air (short)
11416 Monkey Businessmen (short)
15886 Cuckoo on a Choo Choo (short)
18899 Triple Crossed (short)
18900 Flying Saucer Daffy (short)
19796 Blast of Silence
20671 Sergeant Ryker
20978 Return from the Ashes
21167 Beau Geste
21315 A Covenant with Death
21317 Don't Make Waves
21343 Gunfight in Abilene
21385 Hostile Guns
21412 The Reluctant Astronaut
21492 How I Won the War
21508 How to Save a Marriage and Ruin Your Life
21540 The Big Mouth
21541 Sol Madrid
21567 The Secret War of Harry Frigg
21581 Clambake
21618 A Lovely Way to Die
21636 The Anniversary
21716 Kona Coast

I know it's somewhat hard to find these numbers in the 1-22000 range because of the limited accessibility and their unavailability somewhere on the net.

More to come in the coming days.

Thanks. I had several from this list but not all. The shorts are all Three Stooges shorts.

I can see that a lot of missing numbers in that range can be found in a series of documentary shorts called "Screen Snapshots", produced from 1924 to 1958. Sadly, most of them are not on the internet. :-(

Does anyone have the numbers for these serials?

Tailspin Tommy (1934) (12 chapters)
Mystery Mountain (1934) (12 chapters)
The Adventures of Rex and Rinty (1935) (12 chapters)
The Roaring West (1935) (15 chapters)
The Call of the Savage (1935) (12 chapters)
Tailspin Tommy in the Great Air Mystery (1935) (15 chapters)

I'm spending a long and hard time hunting over 9000 missing numbers. Some serials and other unfamiliar series of short films from the PCA era can help fill these missing ones, but most of these are not found somewhere on the net.

This week's bulletin is so small. Counting re-ratings:

51510 The True Adventures of Wolfboy (re-rating)
52824 Marry Me (re-rating)
52837 Dinosaur Train: Adventure Island
52863 Scare Us
52864 Dragon Soldiers
52865 Breach
52866 Iron Mask
52867 Miracle in East Texas

There are 17 remaining for the year. At the current trend (average of 9.38 new rated titles per week), this year will be lower than previous year and will be going to be the lowest since the 1980s.

Nine new titles have been rated this week.

52318 Love And Monsters

52743 Breaking News In Yuba County
52768 Blue Bayou
52784 The Prom

52838 Judas And The Black Messiah
52872 Lockdown
52873 The Little Penguin Pororo's Dinosaur Island Adventure
52878 An Imperfect Murder
52879 Chick Fight

The sad truth is, those missing numbers in the 1-22000 range are mostly "lost" short subjects from 1934-68, including serials, so we won't be able to complete the list. :-(

I'm curious what does the quote mean? "...and
the MPAA information office does not have the title of the film issued
certificate #1 readily available." That was from a source dated about 20 years at the earliest.

Oh, darn. It seems that there are no new titles for this week. The weekly bulletin should come out like three or four hours ago. If so, this will be the first time in like 19 years. Or maybe there's something wrong?

Update: The weekly bulletin comes out one day later than usual. Too close to missed out by a week! However, it's a bit too small.

52587 Run
52721 The Glorias
52771 Giving Voice
52779 Mario Puzo's: The Godfather Coda: The Death Of
Michael Corleone
52810 Echo Boomers
52812 The Croods: A New Age
52883 Horizon Line

I found out the reason that the number of rated films are declining over time. According to an article on Deadline posted in 2018, the ratings for films released by minor film distributors (particularly independent ones) started to exclude from the rating system. As a result, an annual decline of about 7% is excluded. The article also shows the statistics: In 2014, 708 films were rated while in 2016, 605 were rated. By the following year, 563 were rated, reduced by 7%. What I'm curious is the fact that if the previous year's percentages were duplicated for the next 3 years, in that scenario, the overall number of rated films would be 453 in 2020 (as of 9/23, 358 are rated). So close to that target, with 13 weeks left for the year. And what if the percentage went at the same rate? Then the number of rated films would be 421 in 2021, 392 in 2022, 364 in 2023, and so on until I probably lost interest in compiling films on the list as a result of constant down rate, thinking that it's too insufficient. Sounds like that the film rating is going to be a thing of the past for many films.

So the rating of films released by minor distributors contributed to a huge number of rated films, and if they're excluded from that system, it would hit the 1980s level (in that decade, 323-569 films are rated). We know that the rating of these films is responsible for the assigning of these numbers.

Yesterday I reached a new personal milestone:

7000

of which 592 are shorts.

In other words, 13,2 % of the 53,000 numbers.

However, my actual total is a bit higher because obviously I'm not including movies with unknown / unconfirmed numbers, such as:

Under the Yum Yum Tree (1963)
The Truth About Spring (1965)
Return of the Seven (1966)
Tony Rome (1967)

Those are 4 classic films that I've seen and have certificate numbers on the credits, but they're too small and/or difficult to make out.

In the modern era, off the top of my head there's:

Kika (1993)

one of those movies that surrendered its NC-17 rating, and the number is not available on filmratings.com

And I'm sure I've seen a few more movies that are in similar situations, from both the classic era (pre-1968) and the modern ratings era.
