personally, i think, being in the same room when something like that is playing doesn't count as watching it.  
but you have seen  it.

Once they click on Bonus features such as interviews, audience Q&A, Making Of, I'm late for the door.

My name is Tony and I've been in the MPAA number-hunting business since at least 15 years ago, and I can say that at this point, I have checked 5,200 numbers in my personal movie list, which means that out of the nearly 52,000 movies and shorts that comprise the list so far, I've watched about 1 in 10.

I'm 41 years old and I've been watching world cinema in earnest since I was 14 or 15 years old, and I realised long ago the objective of seeing every single movie and short in the list is, on top of crazy, a practically impossible pipe dream. Even if you could devote yourself to watching movies for, say, 10 hours a day, it would take you an entire adult lifetime to complete the task, not to mention the lack of availability of many of the more obscure films and shorts ever rated by the MPAA.

Still, it's a nice sideshow to my movie watching habit in a kind of "wag the dog" way. For me, it's always been about quality over quantity, so my real goal is to see as many "good movies" as I can, but I won't deny the MPAA number list has become a growing obsession over the years.

Anyway, I'm including a graphic representation that I keep, on top of the simple written list, that helps to visualize the magnitude of the endeavour. It's a simple image file divided into 25,000 little squares representing movies numbered 1 to 25,000 (or years 1934 to 1977-78) . The squares filled in red represent movies (full-length features) and the ones filled in violet represent shorts (mostly animated ones) that I have watched so far. The vast white space is all the movies I haven't seen yet. I have another graphic for numbers 25,001 to 50,000 (or years 1977-78 to 2015) which looks far less empty, that I can also post in case you're interested.

and his last visit is fairly recent so it seems he still lurks occasionally around here and maybe he will resurface and give us an update on his challenge some day.

On my part, yesterday I saw Avatar for the first time, and since it was the extended version I was able to check 2 MPAA numbers, the one for the theatrical version and the one for this longer one I saw, putting my tally at 5225. There are actually quite a few movies that have 2 certificate numbers, and sometimes 3 or even 4, each one for a different cut or re-configuration of the film re-released through the years.

Anyhoo, not that anybody asked, but here's the second half of my MPAA "heat map" with movies numbered 25,001 to 50,000 spanning 4 decades between the late 70s and the mid 2010s:

So, in this week’s MPAA bulletin (https://filmratings.com/Content/Downloads/cara_rating_bulletin.pdf) we can see that they've reached #52,000 and that honor falls on an R-rated film called "The Poison Rose"

Previous milestones include Stanley Kubrick’s Lolita, which received certificate #20,000 in 1962 or Peter Hyams’ “Capricorn One”, which was #25,000 in 1977.

Anyway, as of today my current number is 5395, that's nearly five thousand and four hundred movies and shorts watched, of the 51,204 in the whole list.

If you've ever watched a movie all the way through the end credits you've more than likely seen the MPAA logo with a number associated to it.

Example:

This number, which is sometimes called a "certificate no." or an "approved no.", indicates the order in which the film was approved by the MPAA. Although in the early days it was the "PCA" (Production Code of America), and later the "MPPDA" (Motion Picture Producer's and Distributors of America) who decided if a film was approved or not.

Now as you all may know after my little stint with the IFDB, I'm a little OCD. :lol: I'm also kind of anal and I like to keep lists of movies that I've watched, books that I've reads. You know, that sort of thing. About a decade ago or so ago I decided to start keeping track of these numbers. Why? I have no idea. After a while though I'd wonder to myself why the hell I was doing it. What was the point? And I'd just end up tossing my list. Then after some time I'd decide to start up again and wish I hadn't tossed that list. And the cycle would repeat.

About a few weeks ago I threw out about 5-6 handwritten pages, double sided, with these numbers and corresponding titles to which they belonged. Now I've decided to start up again and wished I hadn't thrown out my list. :lol: This time around though I've decided to give myself a little incentive, and a challenge, to keep my list going.

What's the challenge? Well, not only am I going to compile a list of the near 48,000 titles that have been approved so far, the highest number I could find was 47,950, but I am also going to watch every single title on that list. You read right. I am going to use that list as a checklist of films to watch, and I am going to try and get through it. :lol: Luckily for me I watch around 500 movies a year, and I'm sure I've already seen countless thousands from the list already, so I'll be able to check off quite a few right from the start. Unfortunately this means that I'm going to have to sit through films for which I was hoping never, ever, to see. Yep, that means I'm going to have to watch the Twilight movies, that Justin Bieber movie, the Hannah Montana concert movie, etc. I'll just save those for last. :lol:

So, in conclusion, yes, I am insane. :lol:

Thanks for the screenshot Neg. That is really weird. I've got the Seed Of Chucky DVD in right now, and I'm staring at the certificate/approval number, and it's also 39360. How is that possible? How could the MPAA screw up so bad as to not only assign the same number to 2 films, but to 3? I'm going to have to assume the other 7 who are listed as having number 39360 are also correct.

The number of new rated films which are responsible for the issuance of certificate numbers started to decline, especially after the certificate numbers hit the 50,000 mark (if my memory is right). We know that the films recently released are still in the 52,000 range and the highest is still #52,778 which was from last week's rating bulletin. As I observed, in the recent weeks, the number of new rated films is too small (particularly 2-10, most recently this week's 4), consisting the average number of films rated this year (as of this week) is 8.93 (which expect to be 455 films by year-end, more or less), while the previous year in overall was 9.88 (514 films).

I wonder if we can see the films hitting the 53,000 mark before the year ends?

I Have more than 41ooo of the nearly 53000 Numbers. It's the most complete list around. Im missing 2,016 Numbers Between 22000 & 53000. 120 of the missing are between 30412-30550. This my largest missing gap on my list. I'm missing less than 100 per 1000 sequence with the exception of the 30000 of which I'm Missing 218 of the 1000 sequence. Based on the size of my list I won the 50000 movie Challenge. I'm Missing 9,541 Numbers Between 1-22000 & 2016 Numbers Between 22000-53000. I really want to complete the list between 22000-53000. The 9500 missing Between 1-22000 will be the Hardest to complete.

The numbers 1-21800s were issued during the Production Code era (1934-68), which was before the rating system was put into effect. 9500 of them are not found somewhere on the internet.
