The 50,000 Movie Challenge

Vultural said:
Correct. I did misunderstand.
Though, random IMDB numbers are not lacking merit, either.

Yes, but it definitely makes getting a hold of some of those movies a challenge. Not to mention that some of those IMDB numbers are for TV shows. For instance one of the numbers you listed was for a TV from 1948. I think I'd have a good deal of trouble trying to get my hands on that one.

Just for fun I decided to check to see if I had identified any of the movies associated with the numbers you listed, but I'm afraid I haven't identified a single one.

And Rogue, in case you were wondering, I didn't watch "Peacock" tonight like I had planned, but I did keep my promise and watched "Spanglish". Since my last updated on Monday I've added 11 new titles to my list. I've got reviews written for 7 of those 11. The 4 which are missing reviews are films that I had already seen. Only one of which has an actual number though. The other 3 have MPAA info on the artwork, but not in the film. And since the info was only listed on the US artwork I didn't find out until now that they had been rated by the MPAA. I don't want to go too long without another update so I'm looking at Sunday/Monday for my next one.

That number is for "Two Lovers" starring Joaquin Phoenix and Gwyneth Paltrow. You're a little late though, and missing some numbers. :p Not doing it again tonight, but I'll do it again soon.

I simply created a random sequence, mistakenly using IMDB.
Checked after your comments, and yes, they were odd shorts, TV, and
Sirocco from 1951 with Bogart, Lee J Cobb, Everett Sloane.

This is what you get for asking for suggestions.
Everyone could have sent My Little Pony, The Barbie Diaries, or a Shannon Whirry extravaganza.

A little late Neg. Not doing this again tonight, but I'll ask again next week. May end up making this a weekly thing.

But let's see what those numbers are.

40.222 - don't know it
41,222 - don't know it
42,222 - don't know it, although I do know 42,223 (Hollywoodland) and 42,223 (Hoodwinked!). I've seen both of those already though.
43,222 - don't know it
44,222 - don't know it, although I do know 44,220 (Killshot), 44,221 (Starship Troopers 3: Marauder), and 44,223 (The Forbidden Kingdom). I've already seen Killshot and The Forbidden Kingdom though. I haven't seen any of the Starship Troopers movies yet though so I'd have passed on that one too.

Given that this challenge is about watching every movie awarded a certificate/approval number by the MPAA I thought it was obvious that I was asking for MPAA numbers and not IMDB numbers. But no harm, no foul. And yes, I realize that people could have listed numbers for a bunch of kids movies or something, that's why one of the rules was not to check the IMDB for exact titles. I wanted it to be completely random. If somebody had posted numbers that were all awarded to kids movies, or softcore porn, it would have been obvious that said person cheated.

About to watch Cabin Fever 2 for the third time so I can refresh my memory and give a proper review. Update and reviews will follow after the film.

^ I don't get the hate for the Cabin Fever movies. I enjoyed both of them, although I think I liked the second one more than the first. Have yet to see the third one, is it even released yet?, but I'm looking forward to it.

This update contains 21 new titles, which now brings my total up to 3287. I've decided to start writing my reviews as I watch these movies so that the films are fresh in my mind. That way if I take too long to post an update I don't have to scramble to remember what I thought of a movie. And because of that I can now post my updates and reviews at the same time, and it saves me from posting twice. So here's what I watched/added this week.

40123 Spanglish

It was nice to see Adam Sandler in a more serious role. It was hard to take him too seriously though, because after all, it's Adam Sandler. The movie was alright at first, but it started to drag after a while. It also felt a lot like a Judd Apatow movie. Which could explain the dragging feeling. Replace Adam Sandler with Paul Rudd, and Tea Leoni with Leslie Mann, and you've got yourself a Judd Apatow movie. Basically what you've got here is "This Is 40", but not as bad, which still isn't a good thing.

44274 Fired Up!

Not wanting to spend two weeks in the Texas heat during football camp two high school football players decide to join the cheerleading team so they can be near 300 cheerleaders at cheerleading camp. Predictable comedy in the vein of the American Pie and Road Trip movies, with a little Bring It On thrown in for good measure. Fired Up! may be predictable but it's still a lot of fun. Eric Christian Olsen and Nicholas D'Agosto are great as the leads, and so is Philip Baker Hall as the football coach, even though he's barely in it. It was also interesting to see Adhir Kalyan, aka Timmy on "Rules Of Engagement", as a flamboyant gay man. Definitely recommended if you like the above mentioned films.

44701 Peacock

A man struggles with his sanity after a train caboose crashes through his backyard and his "wife" is revealed to his neighbors for the first time. Think Psycho, but without a homicidal second personality. It was hard for me to enjoy it because Cillian Murphy as a woman still looks like Cillian Murphy. His voice wasn't even feminine either. Just a little softer than his regular voice. I don't know how anybody, let alone his neighbors, could possibly buy him as a woman. If this isn't an issue for you then by all means give it a shot, otherwise stay away.

45404 Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs
45443 Black Dynamite

45514 Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever

Thanks to a contaminated water source, which is used by a water bottling plant, the infection from the first film is spread to a high school on prom night. The animated sequences used at the beginning and end of the film are pretty sweet, there's plenty of blood and gore - including a close-up of a bleeding penis excreting a foamy looking pus reminiscent of shaving cream coming out of a can - and Mark "American Movie" Borchardt even has a small role. What more could you ask for? A lot of fun from start to finish.

45648 Wrong Side Of Town

When Bobby Kalinowsky (Rob Van Dam) walks in on a guy attempting to rape his wife he takes the guy out. Unfortunately for him the guy pulled a knife on him, and when Bobby steps out of the way the guy lands right on the knife. Now the guy's brother, who looks like a younger Sid Haig, puts a $100,000 contract on Bobby's head. Felt like a cross between "The Warriors" and "Death Wish", with opening credits reminiscent of a James Bond film. A lot of good action scenes, but definitely some bad acting. Definitely worth checking out if you're an action fan.

45685 Bitch Slap
45844 Season Of The Witch

45896 Icarus (aka The Killing Machine)

Eddie Genn's (Dolph Lundgren) life comes crashing down on him when somebody from his KGB past wants him dead, and he's willing to have his family killed in order to get to him. The acting is okay, although it's a little hard to take Dolph Lundgren seriously as a family man, but the action is disappointing. It's pretty much just gunfights. I like my action to involve some hand-to-hand combat, and definitely some martial arts. But this is just guns, guns, and more guns. With an explosion or two thrown in for variety. If you're bored and you've got 90 minutes to kill, maybe give it a shot. But otherwise don't really bother. Unless you're a die hard Dolph Lundgren fan that is.

46000 Meadowoods

A group of three college kids decide to murder someone and film the process from idea to completion. I was a little apprehensive to watch this at first because it's done in the same style as The Blair Witch Project. I thought the amateurish look might make this feel too real, too much like a real snuff film, but it didn't. Maybe because I knew going in that this was a movie, but it's most likely because of the acting. The actress playing Stephanie, the female wanna-be killer, had the right look, but as soon as she opened her mouth she killed any believability you might have that she wasn't acting. The actress playing Kayla, the chosen victim, however, was quite good. She definitely gave you the feeling that what she was going through at the end of the film was quite real. The three wanna-be killers are real idiots too. They talk about their plan to murder someone, and how they're going to do it, right out in public. First at a coffee shop and then at a video store. Not only are they filming themselves talking about it, but they're talking about it within earshot of a number of people. Rule #1 if you want to commit a murder and not get caught is NOT TO TALK ABOUT COMMITTING THE MURDER IN PUBLIC! Aside from the suspense at the beginning, of what is potentially going to happen, and the suspense at the end, the film is pretty tedious.

46001 Game Of Death

C.I.A. agent Wesley Snipes must stop a group of C.I.A. agents gone bad from stealing one hundred million dollars in cash. Decent action, plus Zoe Bell's in it. Unfortunately, she's using an American accent instead of her natural sexy Kiwi accent. :( More of a rental, but if you can pick it up for cheap it wouldn't be a complete waste.

46275 Devil

Five people get stuck in an elevator and then weird/"scary" shit starts happening. M. Night Shyamalan is credited with the story, and he's a producer, so that should tell you all you need to know about this movie. If you're still holding out hope, let me just say this. The elevator scene at the beginning of "Speed" was scarier than this entire movie.

46478 Meskada

When a robbery goes bad and a little boy is killed the clues lead back to the lead detective's hometown. Decent film with a disappointing ending. You feel bad for the mother, but when you find out the motive behind the robbery you sympathise with the robbers. It's a little short at only about 84 minutes, without the end credits, so they could have done a little bit more with it, especially concerning the ending, but it's still a very enjoyable film regardless of that. Well worth checking out.

46513 National Lampoon's Dirty Movie

47794 Oldboy

Despite the trailer looking good, this was an utter disappointment. But, being that this is a remake, I expected it to be. I really didn't care for the opening background scenes. I would have preferred if they used the opening scene from the original instead. I did like that they kept the reason for his imprisonment the same, even though they did change it up a bit. Too bad they pussy-ed out of using the original ending. But this being a Hollywood film I'm kinda surprised that they kept the twist and the reason for the imprisonment the same. So I guess there's that to be grateful for. The remake did get one thing right though.

They changed the way that father meets daughter. In the original as soon as they meet and she says that he looks familiar I knew that she was his daughter. While I still enjoyed the reveal, I think it would have been a lot better had she never spoken that line. At least then the possibility that she's his daughter wouldn't have been obvious, to me anyways. But being how young she looked, compared to him, and that he was gone for 15 years, there was no other reason for him to look familiar to her.

Time to update once again. I've added the following 20 titles which brings my current total to 3307. No reviews this time around I'm afraid. Although I will say that "Dallas Buyer's Club" was really good, Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto's Oscar wins were well deserved. Especially Leto's. "Grudge Match" was quite enjoyable, and so was seeing Kim Basinger again. Had no idea she was in it. It's hard for me to take DeNiro seriously though. He should stick to drama cause comedy really isn't his strong suit. The ending was really sappy too. "Ride Along" was okay, but a little stale. "Dead Before Dawn" was a lot of fun. A horror/comedy that doesn't take the horror aspect too seriously. It's a Canadian film but it's got the guy who plays the older brother in the "Diary Of A Wimpy Kid" in the lead, and Christopher Lloyd is in it too, so you know it can't be all bad. :D

I've been going through the IMDB's "Movies Released By Year" function to fill in the gaps. So far I've gone through 2010 and 2011. I'm nearly a third of the way through 2012 and just over half way through 2009. I'm really killing the 46,000's. I just counted all the numbers that I haven't found the associated movie for yet and I'm only missing 424. So that means that I've already found 577 numbers. I know, that should be 576, but there is one number that I've come across that has two movies associated to it. Most of the missing numbers come from the 800 and 900's. So far I've seen 144 movies from the 46,000's.

I'll update again next Sunday night. I'm going to try and only watch movies from the 46,00's this week. Do you want to pick some of the movies that I'll watch this week? Just reply with 5 random numbers from the 46,000 series. I'll pick 3-5 numbers, depending on how many people reply, and if I know which movie is associated with said number and I haven't seen it already I'll watch it. Only one set of 5 numbers per person, and no numbers outside of the 46,000's. I'm looking at you Rogue-theX . ;) :D

Just found another 4 movies from the 46,000 series. That now means I'm only missing 420 to complete the 46,000's. Yay! :D

Yeah, but who has time for girls when I have all these movies to watch. :D

I don't know if anybody read through my last update, but I posted another "You decide what I watch" challenge. Just reply with 5 random numbers from the 46,000 series. I'll pick 3-5 and watch them this week, as long as I know which movies are associated with them and I haven't seen them already.

You got lucky with 46802 cause I haven't found the movies associated with 46800, 46801, or 46803-46806. And the 800's aren't a good one for me. I've only identified 25 movies from that series so far, and of those 25 I've already seen 11. I've been meaning to watch "Bernie" for some time now, so now it's definitely going to happen. Watching that one this week for sure. "The Hit List" sounds like it could be good too, so I'll watch that one as well. Not sure about "Love And Other Drugs" though. Sounds like it could be a bit boring, and it's nearly 2 hours. Think I may put that one off a bit.

Anybody else got any numbers for me?

I just checked my library's website and they've got 8 copies of "Wrecked", so I placed a request for one. They've got 3 copies available now, with one due back tomorrow and one due back on Wednesday. I'm sixth in line though so I probably won't be getting my copy this week, but it should be in some time next week.

I've identified quite a few more numbers, including 43 from the 46,000 series. That now leaves me with only 377 more to identify before I can complete it.

This week's update is going to be a little delayed. I added a number that starts with 0 to my list, and to make sure that I haven't been including those in my grand total I decided to do a recount. The good news is that I discovered an error. For some reason I had "Monsters, Inc." listed as #36501, when in fact it's #38501". I corrected the error and checked my master list to correct it there as well and discovered that I had it listed there under both numbers. The bad news is that I'm going to have to do another recount because I've come about 250 or so short of the grand total, 3307, I've last listed here. Hopefully I screwed up when I was doing the recount, and not with my original count.

Some more good news though. I've identified another 12 numbers from the 46,000 series. That now leaves me with only 365 numbers to identify.

Edit: Forgot to mention, but I deleted the "No info on art, but listed as rated on filmratings.com" file. The info wasn't listed on the Canadian releases for the two films I had listed in that file, but I re-checked for the American artwork and the MPAA info is listed on those. The two films, "American Mary" and "Superman: Unbound", have been moved to the "Info on art, but not in film" file.

Just completed my recount, and the numbers match. Hazzah!

I'll update my Google Docs tomorrow, but I thought I'd post what I'm going to be adding to them tonight. This update contains 73 new entries, and one that isn't counted toward the total, to bring my current total to 3380.
