I hate weird DVD cases. The briefcase thing... Ugh.
Not only is the UK release in a normal case, it's also cheaper.
Um, actually the packaging appears identical with the sole exception that it doesn't include the briefcase (it's still O-Ring packaging). It also doesn't include the miniature car or unicorn (by looking at the picture).
However, it is in PAL, not NTSC, which means I'll never be able to play it over here through anything but my computer. I suppose I could always bum a copy of Final Cut NTSC off my friends to borrow whenever I feel like a bigger screen though.

It's not that PAL is worse (it's better for video, worse for audio) but it just isn't the standard.
Actually, PAL is the standard - all DVD players in the world are compatible with PAL and NTSC DVD's. All TV's sold in Australia are PAL & NTSC compatible, and (almost) all DVD players are multi-region. The USA has two problems in that area - 1. the law legally respects the DVD regional-lockout aspect of the patent whereas ours does not - and 2. not all TV's are PAL compatible. It seems an awful shame to have incompatible equipment, however that's just the way things are in the US. Anyhow, I guess I'd better save $650 for a new 100Hz progressive TV... And yeah I checked the postage rate at HMV (when I posted), and it certainly doesn't add as much to postage as the briefcase would...

Well I guess I was mostly talking about the regions (because they don't sell PAL here at all, and my DVD player for my TV isn't region free) but I hadn't thought about the other part. I'd be willing to bet that my TV isn't PAL compatible, but technically I don't know a whole lot about it.

The easiest solution though is always just running things through my computer. I have S-Video, VGA & DVI-I outputs, so I can hook up to just about any TV or projector. I just don't have much of a reason to until I get an HDTV or a large projector. It's higher resolution on my monitors & I don't mind the size. I sit close enough for it to still be quite clear.

By the way, the casing in the UK package is fine by me. Anything rectangular (though there can still be awkward designs) is generally fine by me. I just don't want oversized or misshaped designs, nor anything with figurines.

The only part I'm still disappointed about is the fact that the 5th DVD doesn't come in a standard case without all the other crap. Frankly, I find the extra stuff silly.
I feel the same. I want those 5 discs without all the other stuff...
.

UK release announced, and it?s the 5 disc release (with work print), and without the suitcase.

?17.99 at HMV (and play.com)
Woohoo, I'm game. Now release this same version in the Netherlands and I'll buy it!!

FINALLY! Amazon.co.uk has confirmed the price at ?17.99, which means a vat-free price of ?15.31 (calculated as Total/1.175). So, including postage, here are my options:

Amazon.co.uk: $45.63 (tin)
HMV.co.uk: $53.61 (tin +keyring)
EzyDVD.com.au: $89.83 (digipak)
Amazon.com: $73.26 (briefcase)
EzyDVD.com.au: $189.83 (briefcase)

It's worth noting that the amazon.co.uk price without the VAT is less then half the full recommended UK retail price of ?30.99. This equates to about $75, however that's largely VAT - without VAT the UK price is about $63.80. It makes me wonder why the Australian version costs $99.95 (RRP) - this only includes GST, so the GST-free price is $90.86 - $27 MORE then the UK which typically has very high DVD prices compared to the rest of the world.. and it doesn't appear to be a tin-release like the UK (although at this point nothing would surprise me).

I suppose I'll also note that the briefcase packaging (R1) would set me back more then $20 more then the R2 price, so as sad as it is that I'll have to let the briefcase packaging go, I believe I'll be ordering the Amazon.co.uk product (after all, even at 42% of retail the AUS version would still be $58, which does not cut the mustard for me - that's the price I'd like to pay for the R4 briefcase).

Amazon.co.uk doesn't ship to the states (or at least the last time I checked it didn't - only to Europe) so I'm stuck with the HMV one.

I've ordered from Amazon UK before and I live in the states.

Wow, this just makes me sick.

Go to the official website here. I've chosen that page because you can see "The Film That Started It All ... Own it on DVD & Hi-Def 12/18/07" (but the UK release date is the 3rd! And the Aus release date is the 5th!) Notice anything? That's right, they've gone and used the BR Movie font. The problem with this is that the font was based solely on 8 letters A, B, D, E, L, N, R, U (the letters in BLADE RUNNER). As professional as the font may appear, it's entirely based on a logo. The letters in the logo are the shape they are for the logo - not for general publicity use, which begs the question as to why warner is so cheap as to use a freeware trademark-infringing font instead of getting a tailored job done. That's the reason I would never, ever use the "BR font" for anything besides the BR logo.

The Final Cut font looks a bit like the Terminator font....

Or am I just seeing Terminator in everything?

Yep, here: amazon.co.uk US-specific info. Of course GyRo567, HMV include that keyring - and it is a nice keyring, but I don't think I can justify paying more for it!

I certainly am not interested in trinkets. Thanks for the link by the way. I suppose I could have gotten my last import for about $10 less, but when I asked customer service, they pointed me towards something that implied that I could not get it shipped to me.

I still think it's terrible that the US still doesn't sell dual-format televisions (except HD-TV, I'm guessing) as standard. Also, I bought a DVD recorder on Friday, and asked for the region-free code, which was given to me - they let me know Philips used to have it in the box, but stopped doing that. It's a funny situation, some have the code in the box, some are region-free out of the box - and the retailer is always given the code for the players they sell (and it's important to ask for it, since you won't always find them online), I wrote the code down in the manual too. Now finally I could back-up onto disc some rare documentaries I have stored on the Foxtel PVR (like Life of Crime 1 & 2 which sadly are not available on DVD anywhere).
what makes you sick?

...yes i read the whole thing
Warner isn't very imaginative, and I think when my two custom compilation covers are released you'll see this. Warner is one of the most invasive when it comes to protecting their IP, and this is what I was referring to. Warner came up with RCE, and they also tried to print "this disc is not for rental" onto Australian discs (illegal anti-competitive two-tier marketing strategy) - which they were then sued over, and so thousands (or millions possibly) of discs ended up in landfill. Furthermore, they continue to force customers to double-dip - and to get around being sued for their two-tier marketing they started the "rental version disc" - releasing it prior to the "retail" version at wholesale prices so high that consumers would not purchase the discs, essentially pushing ahead with the same two-tier marketing strategy, legal only because they don't release the retail version until AFTER the rental version. This is why we need parallel importing - to stop Warner abusing the market, if we had parallel importing they would have to compete against international publishers and wouldn't be able to sell their "rental only" garbage.

And that's not the end of it by a long-shot, but basically the irony is they screw their customers over hard - and then have the flak to use a fan-made (IP infringing) font for their publicity. In the US (mainly) they use all kinds of techniques to make copying the discs more difficult - yet if I buy one of Warner's DVD's I'm not allowed to return it unless it's defective because "it can be copied". It makes my head spin! Not to mention the length of time it's taken Warner to actually release Blade Runner properly.

Well, I've gone ahead and placed my order with amazon.co.uk, the total (including shipping) came to ?18.88 - which is only 90 pence more then the VAT-inclusive price, and seeing as the Australian dollar is very strong, the economy just sweetens the deal.

Anyone for a not-so-good deal from Amazon?

http://amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000WCD9 ... d_i=468294

You can buy the DVD for ?17.98 - OR - you can buy the DVD WITH Soundtrack for ?23.24! What a deal, that's only ?5.26 for the soundtrack in this Amazon exclusive, which I suppose would be a good deal, if Amazon didn't sell it seperatly for ?4.97. Wow, a new and inventive way to rip-off customers!

it always seems silly when these bonus packs cost more than buying the individual products separately. No new trick, but people keep falling for it.

I'm sooo looking forward to recieving this movie!!!!

I'm VERY happy!

Furthermore here is my bank transaction:

Code:
3 Dec 2007 DEBIT CARD PURCHASE AMAZON EU AMAZON.CO.UK GBR GBP 18.88 $44.55
3 Dec 2007 DEBIT CARD CURRENCY CONVERSION FEE AMAZON EU AMAZON.CO.UK GBRGBP $ 0.43
Total price: $44.98. RRP in Australia: $99.95 - release date: 19-12-07... Thus I save 55% off the Aussie recommended retail price, AND recieve it sooner - AND it has better packaging.

It's a grand film. It's in the cinema here right now.
But only in one Arthouse theatre.

Damn it's good. So nice to see a really clean noise-free print.

Well, the packaging was even larger then I expected - and much more horribly worse.

On the outside the packaging is indeed very nice and professional:

packinggi6.jpg

But the inside tells another story, you have possibly the worst O-ring packaging EVER:

insidepr4.jpg

The discs are overlapped, they're only held in place by half clamps, and the "finger dips" for the over-flap discs are there only for show, it's not possible to remove the disc like that since there's a plastic lip preventing it - making removing the discs all the more difficult. Thank goodness I never again have to put the discs in that packaging!
