From Hell: Engraved In Stone

Glad you liked it and glad you thought it was "Grim";-). Just what I was aiming for. Please add you comments to a review when the listing goes up.

Will do.
Probably paraphrase what I scribbled earlier.

I liked it and it was far better than the original which was ok. Top notch editing but lousy choice of credit songs and other reviewers concurred but this is a person observation though technically I feel they are inappropriate based on my vast experience in watching films like a loon lol (unless ive lost my mind!!!). Great work, well done and thank you for your hard work :D

You've lost your mind :p

^ A song so beautiful that even the dude who wrote it can't get through it without crying.

But seriously, thank you and glad people are enjoying this edit!:)

And thanks for taking the time to write detailed reviews one and all!

What is really exciting, is that your indy edit is the highest reviewed on fanedit which is pretty sweet...watching tonight on the big screen, fingers crossed we survive lol then on to a transformer 2 fest....if they can save indy someone else surely can save optimus lol

i didnt think i would like the black and white but after watching the edit i loved it and think the movie should have been released that way in the 1st place.great job with this edit done by TM2YC and thanks for your time and effort i really enjoyed watching this

It's great that people are still digging this edit. I think it's the one I'm most proud of from last year, even if editing it was kind of depressing (Given that my goal was to remove all the light and happyness and replace it darkness and corruption :-D).

The change to a deep black and white is very striking and fits the mood of the film perfectly. It looks great and gives the film a visual sense of creeping dread. I especially like how dark it was when the woman was grabbed from the shadows and disappears into them. The darker deleted scenes also aid the film in feeling darker and less like a typical Hollywood film.

However, these changes cannot overcome the fundamental flaws that the movie has. This should be a dark and disturbing movie with a low budget and no-name actors to justify its poor box office prospects. Instead there are big name actors so of course the movie has to have Johnny Depp doing his standard eccentric performance and the cliche of the prostitute with the heart of gold. It can't be too disturbing either and there has to be a happy ending. TM2YC succeeds in cutting down the eccentricities, removed the happy ending, and made the mood darker so it's a definite improvement. But the big problem I still have with the movie is that it's rather boring. Mostly we just wait until one of the prostitutes is killed and then Johnny Depp strolls up and says there's a mad doctor on the loose. Since Jack the Ripper's identity is a mystery for most of the movie we either follow the prostitutes which are uninteresting and mostly just drink and bicker or we follow Johnny as he does not very interesting detective work. There's not really much suspense as it's mostly just people wandering down dark cobblestone streets and occasionally dying.

In conclusion, this edit is far superior to the original and has a bold look, but some things just can't be fixed through editing. Based off how well the changes were made and what a difference they make, I recommend the edit on the chance others will enjoy it more than I did.

Do you recommend this edit? -Yes

Sounds like everything I did worked and improved matters but I still wasn't able to overcome the original flaws for you... e.g. Johnny Depp, Heather Graham etc :-D

Performances aside... I was surprised that you found the characters themselves boring though, I thought the prostitue's plight was pretty engaging stuff. One of the few things that the original movie did well from the comic, was showing the horror and misery of their lives on the hellish streets of Victorian London. One of my intents was to make my edit less about character and plot and more about the oppressive atmosphere of a society rotting from the top down. So more akin to the flavour of the comic, if not the content.

I'd love to see 'From Hell' turned into an HBO-style series, that's the only way to give enough screentime to to all the characters and plot layers.

Thanks again for giving this a watch and taking the time to review it :).
