Elysium: The Bone Saw Cut

I've been toying with the idea of an Elysium edit for a while now, and I figured since I've not been very active for a while (and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with the rest of Man of Steel) that I'd take a crack at it.

The idea at the core of this edit was an attempted to edit out Jodi Foster's character, secretary Delacourt. I generally lover Foster's work, but I wasn't completely struck here. The character felt too artificial and more than a little wooden. And while I can certainly see that it was intentional to a degree, it just took me out of the movie too much.

She's also set up as an antagonist to Max in the trailers, but for most of the running time she's trying to take over Elysium or something. With her not in the picture, Kruger is going to take over as the force trying to stop Max from getting Elysium, not necessarily recovering the code from his head. And how do I intend to do that?

This will be a bit of a controversial choice, and I certainly had my own qualms at first, but I'm going to use the Spanish audio track as the primary audio for this edit, so the people and infrastructures of Earth will be speaking Spanish and English will be used on and around Elysium. For the most part, the translation of the Spanish will be faithful (in other words, based off the film's English dialogue and the subtitles) but I'm going to take a few liberties in several places to alter the story.

This will include:
  • No one from Earth has ever made it to Elysium. No one. Ever.
  • Spider is trying out a new type of transponder code (or some such) which is why he's willing to let Max try to go up.
  • Kruger is still going to be after Max, but we won't see him get fired. He's still going to be more or less insane, though. His reasons for abducting Frey and her daughter will be the same, but I'm going to explore alternate reasons for bringing Max to Elysium.
  • I'm going to attempt (key word) having the guy who Max gets the brain code from actually be a higher official from Elysium rather than just a business man. After all, why does a business man have such a code?

I'm going to create a new introduction to the film that shares basically the same information that the current one does, but also adds that no one from Earth has made it to Elysium. I don't have any idea on what the final length will be, but it will be a lean film.

Coolness! I've yet to see Elysium but an Aztek edit is always great news! :)

makes no sense. Who are the people living there? Aliens who happen to speak English and look exactly like humans?
 
Allow me to better explain myself, [MENTION=6765]Adabisi[/MENTION] :

Elysium's purpose and existence is the same as in the theatrical version. What I meant to say (and elaborated poorly) was that no one trying to flee Earth to get to Elysium ("illegal immigrants," or "undocumented" as the film likes to call them) has ever made it. By showing that people have made it to Elysium, it begs the question: why don't they just load up on weapons and take over all or part of the station by force? After all, it works at the end of the movie (granted, they had help, but still).

As I said in the first post, I'm redoing the introductory text to better explain this, although, truth be told, I didn't really need to do all that much. :p

i look forward to this edit.
i was really upset with how this movie turned out, i payed $90 at crown gold class to see this and it was disapointing, the only charator i liked was Kruger and he did not have enough screen time.
i would have rather had a whole movie based on Kruger.
but your edit sounds like it will fix most of the problems i had with the movie and ive never been disappointed with any aztek fanedit.

Melbourne crown casino in the gold class cinema. i took my wife so that is why it cost so much.
we were both upset by how the movie could have been better

I do hate to say it, but Kruger is also getting a reduction in screen time, though only out of necessity since I'm cutting him shooting down the first few shuttles and his interactions with Delacourt (and getting sacked). Don't worry, there'll still be plenty to love though. :)
 
yeah i understand why your cutting him down those instances are filler and were never really needed, it would have been good if there was some more back story to Kruger as he was such an interesting character, but you can only work with what you have.
i wish you could change delacourts accent it was horrible.
 
I enjoyed the hell out of this movie but even I'll admit that I would have preferred a Kruger centric film.

Now, I'm still working on the physical cutting of the film, so I'm not really going to be doing much work on the subtitling until that's all done, but I figured I'd share a look into what I'm doing:


The English audio is still in place, so that I can edit and know what I'm cutting and what I'm changing. I'll swap it out for the Spanish audio once subtitling is done. Dwight Fry has been kind enough to offer his help in re-dubbing some of the altered Spanish dialogue to match what I'm writing so that native Spanish speakers (such as himself :D ) who may end up watching the edit aren't driven totally mental. I'm not quite sure how much work in rebuilding the soundtrack that will take, but that's for me to worry about later. :)

And [MENTION=25319]reaper18783x[/MENTION] ... if I'm successful, Delacourt won't be in the edit at all. That's the plan, anyways. The film's climax will be a hair more difficult to edit, but I've got an ambitious vision for this project, so I'm gonna try, dammit.
 
no Delacourt, thats perfect. i love the sound of this edit with out her and the other edits you are making this should kickass.
 
will you be adding any of the deleted scenes of kruger in the edit?
 
I'll have another look at the scenes, but I wasn't really planning on it. I really want to focus on Max and his journey, and while there will still be scenes centered on other characters, they will be kept to a minimum. I've also considered cutting the first scene where we find out Frey has a daughter who is very sick. Max finds out about this later anyways, but right now I'm keeping the scene since it really shows the health crisis on Earth.

Since no one from Earth (the poor, at least) have ever been to Elysium, the "magical healing med bays" sound more like wild fantasy and speculation than actual fact. It's not until the end that we see that they're really real. I'm sure that people from Elysium have visited Earth and told people about them (or they're manufactured on Earth) but since no one has really seen one in action, they're more the thing of legend. Isn't it great when the legend is true?
 
Brilliant ideas Aztek. Are you trimming or cutting down the monologues in the ending/beginning? It kinda took me out of the movie when it has the disembodied voice of female lead saying stuff like "look at how beautiful everything is now!" Like the director thought every little detail needed to be spelled out for the audience. You really don't need to spell out the metaphor when it's shown on screen in the pictures.
 
The 'Spanish audio on earth' idea is pure genius! I loved this movie but still felt there might be room for small improvements, so I'm looking forward to this enormously.

But am I alone in thinking that Jodie Foster was the best thing in the film? (Apart from the awesome scary red robot cops obviously)
