What are you listening to at the moment?

We've had this on repeat for days to help our little guy fight his fever and rest. It's the only thing that will soothe him.

I have yet to start watching Black Mirror (it's been on my list), but I saw today that Alex Somers and long-time collaborators Sigur Ros put out a full score for one of the episodes. It's great:

Sigur Ros are excellent as is Black Mirror, been listening to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons a lot lately, a bit before my time but the songsmithery is sublime ' The Night' in particular gets a spin twice daily.

just realised my lads logged in oops

Ha! Train of thought while reading:

"This looks like something Sinbad would write."
"Looks like Son of Sinbad is his father's son."
"Oh wait. Sinbad is his son."

A promising, if predictable preview of the new Priest album.  Par for the course for their non-Nostradamus reunion era stuff.

Happy Birthday to one of the top five greatest (San Francisco) Bay Area songs, "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" - 50 years old today.

Once again I attempted to listen to Palms, which has to be the most disappointing "super group" ever. Infinitely less interesting than previous albums from various band members. Apparently Aaron Turner was the missing ingredient here.

Palms:

featuring members of ISIS and Deftones:

I know somebody who, back in the late 90s, decided that "Isis" was the perfect name for their new company.

Man, I’m on Beatles overload. I’ve been asked to play in an upcoming Beatles tribute and I’ve got a ton of songs to learn so almost all my listening and playing for the past week has been the Beatles.

Hard to tell if you're a Beatles fan or not.

Is this a chore for you?

On that note, I was almost in a Beatles tribute act. Was gonna play the part of George Harrison. But then I decided to go and study music instead.

Yes and no. I like the music but it’s a lot of songs to learn and I’m doing all the arrangements. So I’m rewriting the parts to incorporate strings, horns, etc, so a regular band can perform the tunes. No matter how much I like a band, a deep dive like that starts to wear on me.

For music lovers and musicians who really likes to go deep into the process of creation I can't recommend enough to follow Rick Beato's youtube channel.
He's a former producer, teacher, musician, who does very good interviews with people like Steve Vai, he goes REALLY deep into all things music in his videos (sometime too deep for me, but it's always interesting). He's knows to have a kid who has perfect pitch hearing and made several incredible video with him.

Here's his latest little video (this one is very short)

And with his son...

EDIT:

and a third one about Danny Elfman's Batman.

I've been re-listening to some songs by one of my all-time favorite musical artists, Greek singer Nana Mouskouri. I find it rather odd and a bit sad that she seems to be obscure today (at least here in America), as she is one of the greatest voices (and top-selling artists) of all time. She can sing in over ten languages, and has possibly the most angelic voice that I've ever heard, despite (or perhaps in part because of) the fact that she has only one functioning vocal cord.

While "The Rose" is generally considered to be definitively Bette Midler's song, I find Nana Mouskouri's rendition to be even better, and it is one of my favorite songs of hers.

Her album version (below) sounds even better than the live version above.

"Only Love" is considered one of her signature tracks, and with good reason.

Here's the song that introduced me to her: her cover of "My Own True Love", a song version of the theme to "Gone With the Wind" (1939).

Here's her excellent rendition of the classic Broadway song "Love Changes Everything".

And here's her haunting cover of Jim Croce's hit "Time in a Bottle".

"Love is a Rose", easily one of her her catchiest songs.

Another one of her originals: an upbeat little ditty called "Turn on the Sun".

"There's a Time", a version of the classic German song "Muss I Denn".

And last but not least, a few beautiful renditions of classic folk songs from the British Isles.
