Video Preview Doesn't Work?

I used both Windows Vista Movie Editor and I downloaded the (quite AWESOME) Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c and I uploaded an avi version of The Phantom Menace and while it uploaded, the preview only had the audio, while the screen was black the entire time.

What should I convert the file to, to fix this problem of mine?
 
I saw the similar problem someone else had - where the screen was black - and that's my problem. I'm trying to frameserve the avi file, but three popular programs that I tried said it wouldn't work. Avisynth, VirtualDub, VFABI english version, and they all said it doesn't work ... but something must work... :(
 
Vdub doesnt open WMV it needs to be mpeg.
