Finally finished watching through the old BBC series, which covers the first four published books as opposed to the Walden Media trilogy which only adapts the first three.
I can definitely see where the affection for it comes from, though to be honest I found it hard to appreciate "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" at times. From acting meant to be dramatic instead coming across as comical to the limitations of the animal costumes (the Beavers resembling giant furry bowling pins), I kept thinking back to how much more I preferred the film, which obviously benefitted from a much larger budget.
This changed however with the later entries, each one feeling more engaging than the last to me, probably a combination of acclimatisation and the creators progressively getting into their strides, with none of the distracting subplots added to the films. By "The Silver Chair" I was properly enjoying it, not in the least for the brief onscreen reunion between Nursie and Captain Redbeard Rum! The sets and effects (including having the characters interact with giants) were also excellent on the whole, and I wish that at least "The Magician's Nephew" could have been made as well.
On that note, here's to hoping that the new adaptations currently in production can sustain the momentum to dramatise the complete Chronicles on-screen at last. Having featured in both series (playing Reepicheep and Glimfeather on TV and then Nikkabrik in the "Prince Caspian" film), I wouldn't be too surprised if Warwick Davis gets to play a part!
