This is terribly sad. He's quite possibly the greatest singer/drummer in rock music. He lost his voice to cancer many years ago, only to miraculously get it back -- a bit more strained and weather-beaten, perhaps, but undeniably powerful and inspiring. So cruel.

I also just found out that he played very close to where I live three weeks ago. It will probably go down as one of his last performances, if not in fact his last...and I missed it (and every other chance I had to see him).

He's also a damn fine actor, as anyone who has seen Coal Miner's Daughter (he played Loretta Lynn's father) or The Right Stuff (he played Ridley to Sam Shepard's Chuck Yeager) can attest.

Damn, for some reason i thought his cancer was in remission. Great drummer, great voice (although Rick Danko had the best voice out of anyone in The Band IMO). And have loved his movie cameos in recent years

Awful news. His singing hits you where you live:

Very sad. The Band's "Music from Big Pink" is (in addition to being my favourite album) probably the weirdest album ever to gain wide exposure and make a band famous. The key, if there was one, was probably Levon Helm's drumming and singing. The only drummer who could make you cry, a critic wrote. So true.

And he's gone. Just heard it on the radio about ten minutes ago.
