Intention: This fanedit was created to get the best possible movie from the X-Men trilogy following the original plots. The removal of repetitious exposition and of the childish humor greatly adds to the narrative. By expanding the Jean Grey subplot and allowing more character development the audience gets more attached to the X-Men. And by including more violence and re-organizing action sequences a lot more tension is guaranteed.

FINALLY
I have been inspired by the Phantom Editor.
Using techniques described by the Phantom Editor I have attempted to recraft the Xmen trilogy into this.
I am grateful to all the comments and suggestions which led me to further polish this to where it is
especially Boon 23 who's never ending support and candid comments make me see the error of my ways (and ditch the unworkable even if I love it...THANKS)

I have been meaning to rewatch the Xmen series and this looks like a fantastic alternative.
Any Idea how long a wait on a NTSC version? I can watch PAL on my XBOX but will wait if its coming soon.

well, I just have to create it...
will try to do this within the next days and just like for X-Men Requiem War I will not include the 99 chapter stops, but a lot less, and probably add new menus.

yeah, sometimes I wonder about that too... :)
thing is, if the faneditor does not do it and the fanedit seems to be of any interest, an NTSC version is needed.
I also created the avi for this one and am seeding the torrent.

Hi Boon.

Any update on the NTSC version?

I was just about to download this Trilogy (after really enjoying Requiem War) but then realized that it was a PAL DVD.

Since the NTSC is in the works, I figure I should get that instead.

And thanks to Wraith for his edits... my son really digs them too :)

Let me preface this by saying I mean no disrepect to the editor, I merely am commenting on what I watched and intend these comments and criticisms to be taken in a constructive manner :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

X-Men Trilogy is a fanedit combining all 3 X-Men films into 1 4hr movie. There's not much more to it than that. Wraith has done a great job of removing all the nonsense and repetitive scenes to create a 4hr epic X-Men film that flows quite well as a single story.

Pros:

Successfully condenses the storylines into one film without sacrificing anything pivotal.

Great way to view the trilogy if you are a fan of the originals and want a single epic version.

Relatively seamless editing throughout.

Cons:

The Image quality was less than stellar, and since its on a DL DVD that still has 3GB's worth of unused space, I was less than impressed with the video quality. the extra space could easily have been devoted to a higher video bitrate. (The worst example I can site is the Wolverine/Lady Deathstrike fight from X2. it just looked very grainy and pixelized)

AC3 2.0 audio was adequate but a full 5.1 upscale would have been nice and like the video, theres plenty of free space on the DVD 9 to accommodate it.

There were a few errors/glitches/oddities that I noticed, many are minor but I will still mention them here if the editor attempts another revision:

at 5:32 there is what appears to be some text that briefly appears right as the opening credits are ending.

there is a video glitch in the transition at 10:30 from rogue outside to wolverine inside

Just before Jean uses 'Cerebro' a 20 second scene repeats at 55:44 where Psyclops is talking to the comatose Professor X about taking care of the Xmen should he not make it - I doubt this was intentional

in X2, the removal of the scene showing Mistique injecting the "metal" into the security guards ass made Magnetos escape from prison a bit confusing. Its hard to Imagine "too much iron in your blood" being the soul cause for his escape.

The end credits had many odd transitions and were running too fast to actually read. Suggest removing them altogether or slowing it down some.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Despite my "cons" observations may suggest; overall I enjoyed this edit because I hadnt seen the Xmen series in a few years and it was nice to watch them all together as one film.
Kudos Wraith on a great job maintaining a cohesive narrative throughout 3 different films.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Video Quality - 6/10 It could be better especially since there was so much free space available on the DVD-9

Video Editing - 8/10 a few minor quibbles but overall very nice work.

Audio Quality - 8/10 the 2.0 Sounded fine but the inclusion of 5.1 would have been welcome

Audio Editing - 9/10 no problems/hard cuts

Entertainment - 8/10 I still got the same enjoyment from this edit (if not more) and I didnt have to sit through 6 hrs of film.

DVD Presentation - 5/10 Static menus and Bonus trailers looked good. No Scene selection Screen. No additional Cover or Disc art available.

Total - 7.5/10

How large is the PAL version? I find it very strange to download a DL edit and have extra space on the disc. Especially 3 gigs. Doesn't seem like its worth burning to a disc.

I don't find that strange at all. It was never necessary to just fill a disc, only to have it full.
The PAL version has 99 chapters and 25 chapter menus with sound that take up way over 1GB for example. The video quality of the PAL version is acceptable, but not outstanding and uses a lot of space for that.
My opinion is and was: Make a disc with the best possible quality on the smallest possible space. Don't waste space, no one thanks you for that (as in using pcm audio instead of ac-3 or a constant video bitrate instead of a variable one).

From a transcoding standpoint of course I don't wish you to take up unnecessary space.

From a fanedit release standpoint, video quality is likely going to be subpar on a ~4 hour movie when the bitrate is so low that there is extra space. Why not use the extra space on my expensive DVD9 to increase the bitrate and thus the image quality? But if the PAL version had a bunch of useless stuff taking up space, I suppose that could explain it.

This is not something you could have done yourself boon, as you were simply transcoding. Sorry if it sounded like I was complaining at you, I was complaining at Wraith for the low bitrate.

hehe, well, I created the NTSC version for this actually.
And I did it with all care to provide the same quality as the PAL release (as far as that is possible with another conversion). There is no reason to create a conversion in a higher bitrate than the original. Nothing will be save by that only space wasted.
And yes, 4h of video is a tough one, even for DL DVD. Yet I think the result is ok. If anyone thinks they can create a better NTSC version out of this, they are all of course welcome to do this.

Why not use the extra space on my expensive DVD9 to increase the bitrate and thus the image quality?

I think what we were getting at was, if a release needs a DVD9 thats fine, but use the extra 4 GB's to their fullest potential. Going strictly by what I saw in the NTSC release, if the transfer was equal the video quality of the initial PAL release (I assume) could have been made better by using more/all the extra unused space to increase the bitrate/quality of the original project render.

When theres 3 GB's unused and the video still isnt top notch whats the point of DL at all?

Not intending to complain, rather, to clarify :)

I agree that the PAL quality was not top notch. But to compress it even more would not have improved it. I think it is a compromise between average quality and a not too big file.
There will be a v.4 though.

Maybe we are misunderstanding each other, I meant that when Wraith or whomever created the 1st disc (PAL) if there were 3 GB's of empty space there as well, then maybe he could have rendered a "better" version with a higher bitrate to utilize the empty space. I know that you cant make the NTSC conversion look better than the PAL source but thats not what I am saying.

Pehaps I am missing something, as is often the case (like maybe the PAL disc did use the full DVD9 and the NTSC did not since you changed the menu or whatever) but its nice to hear theres a V4 in the works, as the edit was very nice save a few minor issues IMO.
