Your intention for this fanedit: My intention was to cut out as much material from the film that I thought didn't work or detracted from the important aspects. I also wanted to remove what I considered were some loose ends and/or plot holes within the movie. I did my best to make sure that every plot point that was needed for the story remained intact.

Your way to achieve your intention: Be very strict about what is needed and what worked (IMO). If something sucked, but is needed, it stayed.

Hardware and software information : New ASUS quad-core computer with LG blu-ray Drive. NeroVision 4 with blu-ray plug-in was used for the editing. Retail Blu-ray was used for the source which was transferred to my computer using DVDFab 6.

Time needed for the edition: Approximately Two Months

persons involved: Myself

Hmmm, maybe I should have asked for my screen name on the forums to be Kevinicus as well to prevent confusion.

Bad luck releasing a transformers edit at basically the same time as Uncanny Antman and JasonN. My first thought was "well, who's going to want to see Transformers enough times to review that firstling?"

But... I guess I'll do it. I'm a decent enough candidate, I never saw the movie more than once when it was first released. Plus, I didn't like it very much, even going so far as to fast forward over some parts.

Interesting to see if this can be improved for me. Of course I won't let my problems with the original influence whether I approve it or not.

Hopefully I can watch it and do a writeup by tomorrow night.

Yeah, originally I didn't even think about releasing it, it was basically for me since I knew I'd have to watch it about 300 times in my lifetime since my wife is a huge fan of TFs. Then reave's was the only one out there for so long. Mine has been pretty much done for nearly a month, but I've just not been very quick about getting it out there.

I have skimmed through UA and JasonN's edits and they certainly made some different choices. There were a couple of things UA did that I really liked and feel a little stupid for not thinking of myself, especially bits that I trimmed in the same area, but for whatever reason didn't make it even tighter. I may incorporate those things into my version for me at home, and they might make it into my HD version if I ever get it uploaded. I also found JasonN's usage of Soundwave to be an interesting idea, even if I'm not sure it works completely.

I can't get the DVD files I downloaded last night to play.

Says they are missing the "video_ts.IFO" file.

Any help?

Let me check. Hmm, yep not sure how those got missed.

Change the extension on the .BUP files to .IFO and it should work. I'll change it on the download site.

it's true, there is no ifo file, which is necessary to play a DVD.

ok, I copied and renamed the BUP to IFO and added it to the dlc file. If it works like this all should be fine now.

Is there anywhere/anyone to go to for assistance in coming up with some cover art, etc?

OK, my first review of a firstling, so lets do this one by the books. To give you an idea of where I'm coming from, I have only seen Transformers once, but hated it, and in fact when watching the original I started fast forwarding over some scenes (especially the big city battle). I haven't seen any of the other fanedits of Transformers either.

plot
It's transformers... not really much of a plot, and what's there is really fluffy Michael Bay stuff. But then again, it wasn't based off a classic novel. Kevinicus says he was meticulous about preserving a coherent plot during his editing, and I can attest to that. As an added bonus, thanks to some cuts such as the severely trimmed down analysts scenes, it all felt even more believable and coherent to me than the original.

Great image quality.

audio quality
Great audio quality.

difference to the original
Editing was fantastic. This is what people are talking about when they say seamless. No hard or noticible cuts of picture or audio. Movie had original title sequence and credits. Because it's been a while since I saw the original, and wanted to get a sense of what was being changed as I watched it, I read the edit list as I went along. I agree with all the cuts that were made, and think they all went towards making a better experience. The only continuity "error" that was created, was when Sam is leaving a message on his phone after Bumblebee drives to the junkyard, he says "Mojo I love you" which is a little weird since the earlier scene of Mojo is cut, but it is quickly forgotten (and not strictly an error, just weird for a movie). Now, of course it is invariable that this edit will be compared to the ones by Reave, UA, and JasonN. I haven't seen these, but I've looked over there edit notes, and they all have good ideas. I would have liked to have seen more cuts made in this edit... but as I've said, I am not a fan of the original material. If you want more cuts, check out another edit, but make no mistake, Kevinicus may be a new editor to fanedit.org, but this is a very polished movie.
7 stars

overall presentation
DVD has still menus with music that look nice enough, and scene selection with still thumbnails. It looks nice and gets the job done. Lots of people love motion menus I know, but usually (90% of the time) I find them distracting, annoying, and contrary to ease of use. No cover art yet, hopefully someone will volunteer to make some soon, as this edit deserves to be featured on the front page alongside UA and JasonN. As a said before, the movie featured no custom titles or credits.
5 stars

entertainment
Surprisingly enough, I was much more entertained than I expected. I was mostly going to just suck it up and review this because I wasn't sure anyone else would want to take a chance on a newbie Transformers editor, when they have so many other Transformers choices. With 20 minutes of crap cut out of the movie, and a couple re-arranged scenes, what remains really did seem better than it did before. Of course it's still Transformers, so there was lots of silly stuff, and the ending battle still bored me almost to sleep.

Hmm, I completely missed that. I may have to take a look at that. I had considered cutting part or all of that phone call at one point.

and...

I would have liked to have seen more cuts made in this edit...

Believe me there was plenty more I would have liked to have cut out as well.

Kevinicus, as you used a blu-ray source, were you planning on an mkv/AVCHD release?

I'm planning some sort of High Definition release, I just haven't decided on a format yet (blu-ray, avchd, etc.) I made an avchd on my computer but wasn't thrilled with the quality (I made it too small) though it was still better than the DVD I think.

Congratulations!

And getting 10/10 for audio and video is really great for a firstling! This definetly made the list of edits I am considering watching.

Was it a DVD5 size or a DVD9? There's a big difference, in my opinion, between the two when it comes to AVCHDs. DVD5 size is better than an upscaled DVD but not by a great amount, whereas a DVD9 can look really good.

Was just a 5. Wasn't expecting much, but it was the first I tried.
