A three-episode BBC miniseries adaptation of "The War of the Worlds" is set to premiere on October 6, 2019. It stars Rafe Spall, Eleanor Tomlinson, Robert Carlyle and Rupert Graves, and is written by Peter Harness of "Doctor Who" fame.
Unlike most other adaptations of H. G. Wells' classic novel, it isn't modernized. Like the book, it is set in the 1900s (the book was published in the 1890s, but set slightly in the then-future; its opening paragraph states that its events occurred in the early years of the 20th century).
There was previously a faithful period-piece adaptation directed by Timothy Hines, which was released direct-to-video in 2005, but it was extremely low-budget and embarrassingly amateurish. Thus, this new BBC adaptation is the first version to simultaneously have a book-faithful setting and professional production values.
