A released fanedit, upscaling the 1080p source to 4K with 5.1 Surround, runtime 1hr 54m

full

intent

Modernize the film with a new score and color grading. As this is a Dark Tower related story, incorporate more Dark Tower references. Downplay the preachy tone and reduce the characters over-verbalizing thoughts, fears and motivations, as if this were a stage play. Frank Darabont incorporated a prominent theme about the danger of religious fanaticism, and this is still present but now shown more than told. Finally, tighten up action sequences and reduce dated VFX.

change list

  • Upscaled and enhanced 1080p source to 4K.
  • Modern color regrade, re-grained. Changed the red, pink, and orange tones found in films of the 90’s and early 2000’s to cooler greens and blues. Reduced overexposure.
  • Scored opening Dimension logo and beginning with 1382 Wyclif Gen. ii. 7 and Spiride in the Face of Hym a an Entre of Breth of Lijf by Akira Rabelais.
  • Added title card with a Dark Tower (Book 1) quote attributed to Jake Chambers.
  • Expanded the introduction with an establishing shot of the rural residence on the lake.
  • Now while David paints he has the movie, A Fistful of Dollars, playing in the background. This provides another tie-in to the Dark Tower, and it’s dialogue (you killed all four) brings some subtle foreshadowing.
  • We watch a short scene from A Fistful of Dollars. Clint Eastwood is the motivation for the movie poster David is painting.
  • Removed the movie title from the beginning.
  • Cut the fade to black between the night storm and the morning aftermath.
  • In the backyard, trimmed David narrating that they are walking to see the damage.
  • Added the score, Innocence, by Colin Stetson to the backyard scene when Billy is running around.
  • Cut the initial introduction of Mrs. Carmody arriving at the market and being a jerk.
  • Cut the soldier explaining that they were going on leave when that fact was already apparent.
  • The old man who runs in the store doesn’t keep repeating the same thing, that the mist took John Lee.
  • At the very first sign of trouble, Mrs. Carmody doesn’t immediately say, “It’s death.” She also doesn’t begin saying it’s the end of days right away.
  • The panicked mother goes into less detail about her kids and doesn’t repeat herself.
  • Removed the fade to black as David holds his hysterical son. Inserted a new shot of the mist consuming a rural road. Cut David sitting in a grocery aisle with his sleeping son as the older lady spouts out multiple levels of expository. Instead we cut right to where David sets his son down. These scenes scored with the song, Le Commencement, by Colin Stetson.
  • In the generator room, David hits his head but then does not trip and fall.
  • Removed Jim the redneck going into detail about what David does for a living and saying he’s sick to death of his bullshit.
  • Ollie doesn’t narrate the townies’ psychological need to solve a minor problem.
  • As we see the mist outside the loading dock door, scored in the song, Post Tropical Cyclone, by Yuuki Matthews.
  • Trimmed down much of the loading dock struggle with the tentacles for better action and less dated VFX. Re-scored the scene with Fallout, by Colin Stetson.
  • Jim doesn’t say the line about the big bird. David reacts faster to punch him in the face.
  • David doesn’t say, “and I got his fucking blood on me.”
  • Jim doesn’t say a filler line as he stands up after getting beat up.
  • Cut David’s line asking what the townies’ excuse is for being stupid.
  • Back in the market, Ollie doesn’t get all offended and go into expository when someone calls Brett Norton a windbag. Cut the windbag line.
  • Brett doesn’t get insanely offended when he’s told about the tentacles, and now his reaction seems balanced and believable, given the circumstances.
  • Trimmed a shot of the severed tentacle turning to liquid to remove dated VFX.
  • Removed Mrs. Carmody’s expository dialogue when praying in the restroom stall, and cut the line about not mocking her. Added scoring which includes Planning A Murder by Colin Stetson.
  • Cut Ollie’s line about denial being a powerful thing and Mrs. Carmody’s commentary about no court of appeals in hell.
  • Jim doesn’t move to physically attack Mrs. Carmody.
  • Cut Mrs. Carmody repeating “go out” and then her saying the “howdy do” line. Also cut her call to take sides, the saved and the damned.
  • Removed Mrs. Carmody making a show of holding up the blood from her mouth and Amanda saying she’s too Old Testament for her tastes. Also changed Mrs. Carmody’s dialogue here shorten to it and so she doesn’t call herself Mother Carmody.
  • Trimmed Mrs. Carmody’s line when the biker dude is leaving the market.
  • Removed the fade to black after they drag what’s left of the biker back to the market. Inserted a new scene of the town shrouded in mist with the sound of a creature buzzing by in flight.
  • Cut the scene with David instructing the townies how to use floodlights.
  • Scored the romantic scene between the young cashier and the young soldier using Lost at Sea by Ben Chatwin.
  • Multiple cuts throughout the scene with winged creatures attacking inside the market for better action and less dated VFX. Removed some actions which made characters look foolish.
  • Scored the scene between David and Amanda talking in the aftermath of the first battle using Memories by Colin Stetson.
  • Cut Amanda’s spoken internal narrative about thinking she’ll wake up in a rubber room.
  • Scored the burn victim aftermath scene with Burning Witches by Ben Chatwin.
  • Trimmed most of the predictions characters make about Mrs. Carmody, how she is going to sacrifice someone, and all the commentary about humanity.
  • Added score as the group walks through the mist and then inside the pharmacy. Used 1382 Wyclif Gen. ii. 7 and Spiride in the Face of Hym a an Entre of Breth of Lijf by Akira Rabelais.
  • Cut throughout the pharmacy encounter with the spiders to improve the action and reduce the dated VFX. The spiders don’t make faces, and the old lady doesn’t encounter a spider posing so it can be sprayed with a can of flaming bug spray. Removed action which made characters look foolish.
  • Removed the fade to black after the now smaller group returns to the market, having fled from the spiders. This required trimming up the scene afterward and using SFX on Jim’s crying.
  • Cut the line giving us a history lesson about Fidel Castro.
  • As they carried out the soldier to be sacrificed, added score using Drowning by CUTS. Mrs. Carmody doesn’t say the line about the beast smelling his blood.
  • Trimmed the almost satirical elements of Mrs. Carmody’s final sermon. They mock our humility and piousness? Hahaha.
  • Ollie doesn’t say “I shot her.”
  • Trimmed the dialogue and timing of leaving the market so David and Ollie are not pausing to have a casual conversation when they need to run.
  • Cut throughout the parking lot encounter with the creatures to improve action and reduce dated VFX.
  • Replaced an unconvincing scream as poor Ollie gets ripped apart by the mantis-lobstrosity.
  • For the scenes where David and his companions drive out of the parking lot, drive to the house, and then later encounter the huge creature, added and/or changed the score using: Folk faer andlit by Hildur Guðnadóttir, Unravel by Ben Chatwin, Sky Burial by Rafael Anton Irisarri.
  • Added godrays to the scene with the gigantic creature as well as a new mighty roar as it departs.
  • When the vehicle runs out of gas, scored using Faithful Servant Friend of Christ by Lingua Ignota.
  • Less odd or emotionless faces from the elderly couple prior to meeting their fate.
  • Heavily trimmed David’s unconvincing anguished screams at the end.
  • Added new music to the end of the credits.

this sounds very promising. i agree with you that The Mist had way too much explanation, we don't need to be verbally told everything that's happening. And cutting Carmody immediately predicting the apocalypse is also a good idea.

An edit of the Mist has always been on my list of things to do, specifically just to remove the tentacles and monsters and garner a feeling of not knowing what's out there rather than seeing it. I always preferred the B&W version.

Thanks heavysyde. I’m pretty far through the edit. And last impressions I did consider removing the creatures altogether. But I found the storyline progression doesn’t work well without them. That is unless you want to cut this film down to an hour or so of maybe slightly confusing material. So instead of removing the monsters I cut back on the VFX and showed quicker glances of them. The fakest looking parts of the tentacles have been cut. Also cut: long close-ups of various creatures. Creatures on fire flying around the market. The spiders making weird faces. Spraying a spider with firey bug spray. Bad VFX spider hops. Etcetera.

Sound great - i am definitely interested in viewing your edit once it is complete.

I like this new modern approach to this film and up-dating it for a better viewing experience. I wonder how the new colors will look like and what music choices you're going to apply. When I saw "Other Worlds Cut" title I immediately thought about Silent Hill universe. Any plans for including Akira Yamaoka's soundtracks?

The plan for the grade is adding some green/teal to replace the natural look. Maybe more along the lines of the theatrical release of Man of Steel but not as radical as Blade Runner Final Cut. Just to make the indoor scenes and mist scenes edgier. Though I haven’t graded it yet and am open to suggestions. The Other Worlds in the title is a reference to Stephen King’s seven-book fantasy/western/horror series called the Dark Tower (great books, horrible movie). The picture David paints is of the main character from the Dark Tower. So unfortunately I am not at all familiar with Yamaoka. The main styles I’m using for the score include music from Colin Stetson and similar artists.

EDIT: Above change list update. It shows more of the music. Also I will probably be using the song Sky Burial for the epic creature at the end. Skip ahead in the track below to about 1:30.

That's a great choice, however, as a big Dead Can Dance fan i loved the inclusion of the Host of Seraphim...as for the new colourisation i am never enamoured with this new Hollywood phenomenon of painting everything teal. Thank god for TM2YC regrade of BR Final Cut :)

Yeah I hated the teal in the BR Final Cut and removed it as well in an edit I did of BR. I like the Dead Can Dance song, and the Director did as well-- we can tell he did! Since he kept using it in multiple scenes-- even though it didn't quite convey the emotion needed specific to each part. I may keep it at the very end as David is in anguish though.

Below is a clip of a test grade and test score. This score replaces the Dead Can Dance song used for the initial departure from the market. Some extended shots of the spider have also been trimmed here.

Nice - i love the rescore. with a little bit of finesse it'll be perfect. What piece of music is that?

I'm hoping your version saves me a job :)

Are you using Topaz to upscale?

Well I hope so too, Last Impressions! Yes I did use Topaz for the upscale (no fake grain used in Topaz, I add that back in using Resolve). I will of course tweak it and also reduce the major bass sound that comes barreling in when they arrive at the house. This test was to see how the music pieces felt. Feels good to me. The music is:

Folk Faer Andlit (by Hildur Guðnadóttir)
Unravel (by Ben Chatwin)

Moneyshot test with godrays (new grade, new music, new vfx)

@Zagadka I posted screenshots up in the description

I watched this tonight and congratulations you have done a stella job. The pacing and editing choices are fantastic. The new scoring is beautiful and well incorporated. You have succeeded in modernising the Mist and this will be my go to version from now on. I would like to make my own version of your edit in B&W if you don't mind but that will be for my own viewing pleasure.

As someone who likes the Mist as a standalone movie and who is not familiar with the Dark Tower franchise or the Stephen King novella i am afraid your references flew over my head, so i'm not qualified to comment .

I will also have a play around one day with trying to cut down even more of the creature activity but i imagine you have achieved all that you can.

The picture quality was fantastic on my 4K 65" Screen but the morning scenes after the storm looked a bit too bright for my taste but that is a personal choice.. I did have to adjust the volume a couple of times in the quieter moments but not a big problem...its probably just this old gits hearing.

This edit is highly recommended. Thanks for the time and care you put in making this edit. Hopefully you'll get the faneditor status soon.

Last Impressions. Thanks for watching!!! And of course do whatever you like with the edit and share it with the world. I’m sure others would appreciate it in B&W as well. If I had known you would have wanted to play with it I would have let you use the master Cineform file. Alas, it has been deleted along with all the project files to make room for more edits.

That is a shame regarding the deletion of the master file. In the UK we have Sky TV and to get cable service before the recent Sky Q upgrade, you used to have to have a DVR box - a bit like Tivo .As a lot of people are currently upgrading , I usually pick these old boxes up at boot sales/yard sales & from family members and rip the hard drive out of them and then place them in a caddy. Its a cheap way to get storage space...i pay around £3-£5 for a box. I've managed to keep all my project files so far. Place the HD in an anti-static bag and "Bobs your uncle".

My computer is due an upgrade in the next few months - so i'll save the B&W conversion until i have the new rig capable of faster 4K rendering.

Did you buy Topaz? - i'm looking to get that but at $299.00 its a big commitment. Of course i'll do the trail once i get the new rig.

With my 4K project files for one edit often pushing a terrabyte or more, I've stopped trying to maintain backups. I bought Topaz. It's not perfect by any means but can vastly improve many scenes. Best practice I found is to use the Artemis HQ model, find the moments where it botches up faces, then use a different model for that scene, load both versions into an NLE and scope just the corrected face in. This way you get the full benefits of Artemis while hiding it's problems processing skin in some scenes. To do this well it's important to turn film grain off in Topaz.

As i haven't looked into Topaz extensively , is Artemis HQ model a setting within the software or a separate piece of software? Once i go down this Topaz rabbit hole i'm sure i'll find a few good tutorials online but if you can point me to any - then cool..please do.

Artemis is one of the settings/models in the Topaz software, yes. Topaz has a forum on their website that I scrolled through when I started out.

I know the ending of this movie has always made it so famous, but I literally can't stand to watch it ever again. I'm going to watch your edit now, but I wonder if you've ever considered cutting together a professional cut of this happy ending?

Also you got robbed on that review of your edit. There's zero chance you deserve anything even close to that low, your work is always great.
