There is no question, having viewed my set, that this is a stellar transfer with superb detail and fidelity BUT I don’t like it for the very reason you state.
I already said as much in the Chronogical thread, and for me, they got it wrong and are selling us a false bill of goods.
When the movies were made Gordon Willis went to extraordinary lengths to get that so called warmth. He was still alive when they did the previous Coppola Restoration and for me THAT is the definitive version.
When they did Coda, they dialled out that golden hue…. And it seems like they are trying to convince us that this is how it was originally.
IT WAS NOT!
I saw The Godfather in theatres for its 10th anniversary with Part II… at least half a dozen size times. It was golden and like a Victorian vignette. Saw it again on the big screen for its 20th and 25ths and every time it played near me for decades. Those prints for the 10th anniversary would have been struck and approved when the movies were made.
If this is how Coppola wants them to look NOW, so be it…it’s his vision… and it does now conform to Coda BUT, please don’t insult our intelligence and recall by trying to say this is how it actually looked… it didn’t; PERIOD!
For me, it has lost atmosphere and now looks like a modern film set in the period. Before it looked like it was filmed in the period. Now it’s an ultra HD facsimile of what was, and that is a shame. I tried adjusting my TV to give it a warmer tone, but that just screws it up further… IMHO.
R.I.P. artistic and historic integrity.
