Spicediver is back, and with a Godfather III edit, no less!

Remember that Simpsons episode in which Chief Wiggum stumbled upon a secret room in the comic book store full of bootleg tapes, and one was "Godfather III - good version"? Well, now we know where to get it. ;-)

Count me in for the ride!

 Can't see I've seen that Simspons ep - so it's probably not from an early season, ie. when it was, um, good.

Have you read Coppolla and Puzo's first GIII screenplay from 1989? It's kicking around the web as a PDF. It's very different in several major respects - like the main plotline - and in 1000 details too. It's also not very good. Silly old gangster stuff. And no animosity between Michael and Kay either. The script that actully got filmed is considerably better in my opinion.

Yes, it was from the start of the downhill period, IIRC it was the one called "Worst Episode Ever."

Never read the script you refer to. In any case, Puzo had somewhat of a reputation of delivering awful first drafts. Apparently Coppola described the first version of The Cotton Club he read as a terrible soap opera.

To me, the worst thing about GIII is that it seems to be trying to be part I all over again. Déjà vu, just not as good.

Review:

*THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS, KINDA*

I was excited to find out that Spicediver made an edit of Godfather Part III. I was disheartened though when I saw he only cut 8 minutes and the cuts made were mainly to polish the film. Godfather III is terrible and can probably never be saved fully. So I watched The Godfather Epilogue hoping that the minor tweaks could at least make it more enjoyable.

What I Liked:
The restructured opening. I loved the way you cut together the alternate opening. This is how Godfather III should have started, without a doubt.
Cutting Andrew Hagan.
The overall tightening of the storyline and characters.

What I Didn't Like:
There are still plenty of things left in that made me wince. Examples:
Lucky Coat Guy
Al Pacino's over acting during his stroke ("Thunder can't hurt!")
"I love you cuz." "I love you too cuz."
Andy Garcia's ham-fisted "ZASA!"
Mary looking at obvious movie stills of Apollonia in Michael's scrapbook.
Al Neri stroking his gun on the plane.
These may seem minor but they really bothered me. Sorry.

Fanedit Rating - 9/10
The edit was technically sound. Video and audio were excellent. All editing done perfectly, there just wasn't enough editing.

Movie Rating - 7/10 (Original 6/10)
This does improve Godfather III but there is still room for improvement.

Overall Rating - 8/10

Interesting!

Thanks for reviewing the edit Neglify.

Looking at your "dislikes" list, there isn't one cut there that I would miss either.

So once my Dune project is out of the way, I think I'll recut.

To Neglify - and anyone else who may have seen this fanedit - I'm doing some more work on this over Xmas and January before I make it available again (you may have noticed downloads have not been available).

Based on further reflection about Neglify's suggestions above, I'll be cutting out:

* Lucky Coat Guy
* Al Pacino's over acting during his stroke ("Thunder can't hurt!")
* "I love you cuz." "I love you too cuz."
* Al Neri stroking his gun on the plane.

I welcome further suggestions and discussion, particularly if you've previously watched my edit.

Just cut as much of Sofia Coppola's performance as you can.

Also, have you considered retitling this "The Death of Michael Corleone", like Coppola originally envisioned?

Yes I've already shortened a few key scenes between her and Garcia to meke them more convincing. No more in particular are further planned at this stage.

Just finished some minor revisions:

  1. Cut Lucky Coat Guy
  2. Cut Al Pacino's overacting during his stroke and did some redubbing
  3. Cut "I love you cuz." "I love you too cuz."
  4. Cut Andy Garcia's ham-fisted "ZASA!"
  5. Cut Al Neri stroking his gun on the plane.
  6. Cut Mary's cringeworthy smalltalk at the bottom of the stairs when she first arrives in the neighbourhood to visit Vincent.

Not changing:

  1. Mary looking at obvious movie stills of Apollonia in Michael's scrapbook. Not obvious enough to warrrent a cut, and it's important to to the narrative.
  2. The name - I really like Epilogue, and it's in line with Coppolla's feelings about the installment if not his specific alternative title "The Death Of Michale Corleone".
  3. No hi def version. The SD print is just fine. ;-)

If anyone has suggestions on further changes, I'm all ears!
