Oh no, another edit to do a cutlist for. Goodbye retirement ;)

Just kidding of course, I never watched this since it never had a DVD release. I'm now looking forward to it.

That all sounds good. I would vote no for purple lightsabres - if I get a vote, that is .
The problem is if I keep Dooku's lightsaber red (ie, he'd still be a Sith in the edit), than that would create an odd continuity error when Anakin kills him (which I always had a problem with in the original film):
Just after Dooku dies, Anakin says to Palpatine, "I shouldn't have done that, it's not the Jedi way."

Wait... what?! :?

If the Sith are the ultimate enemies of the Jedi and seek to murder them all.... how is slaying them "not the Jedi way"??? The Jedi Order didn't seem to have a problem with it when Obi-Wan killed Darth Maul or when Anakin went rogue and Yoda tells Obi-Wan to take him out, while Yoda goes to kill Sidious...

(in truth, I suspect that these types of lines were written in for Anakin by Lucas in order to make him appear better or more "noble" than everyone else in the entire Jedi Order, thereby making his turn to the Dark Side all the more "tragic" because he was such a "good" man.... who had already slaughtered women and children in the last movie and didn't give a sh*t about their lives :| )

I always took Anakin's lines to mean that it was not the Jedi way to kill a defenceless man, especially when one's emotional state was one of hate/anger, rather than meaning it was not the Jedi way to kill the Sith at all. In ROTS, Obi Wan tried to talk to Anakin after he had turned to the dark side, before saying, "I will do what I must." He also, in spite of the ensuing fight, tries to warn Anakin against making his last fatal overconfident leap at the end of the light-sabre fight - rather than keeping quiet and hoping his opponent will make a fatal mistake.

It seems to be the Jedi way to make an effort to turn someone back to the good side, as Luke attempts with Vader in ROTJ - although he does have a special motivation. Dooku as a former Jedi might be thought of as still having good in him. Even when Mace Windu is out to kill Palpatine himself, Anakin is arguing that he should stand trial. I think there is enough indirect evidence to postulate that the Jedi do not kill even the Sith without great need.

I do actually understand your point, Jasonn, and one can of course view this two ways. I have simply never interpreted those lines in that way, or had a problem with them. :)

I interpreted the line much like the Captain, but I also support a decision to cut it. Frankly, just about every time Anakin talks in the prequels I feel like I'm being transported out of a galaxy far far away and back to my grade school Christmas pageant. I've seen SNL hosts reading dummy cards with better delivery.

i hate to give any critical feedback as this is the best prequel edit ive seen so far, but if youre considering making changes/ improvements this is my feedback.

fantastic job jason

-(minor) the 'Star Wars' receeding into the background during the crawl seems a little fast

- (Personal preference) i would like to see jar-jar's speaking scene shortened or ideally- have him speak 'alien gibberish' like has been done in other edits and have subtitles underneath . a snipet id like to see removed is qui-gon carrying jar-jar. maybe its possible to cut it so he slams into jar-jar and then cut to them falling over and the tank going over them?

- i agree with one of the previous posters that i think you need one scene between jar-jar saying lets go to the city and the battle. you could avoid this though if you give subtitles to jar-jar and just make him intelligent by suggesting they meet up with the other resistance fighters, then go to the scene with padame at the speeder going over the plans. you could get rid of the gungan ground battle with droids and just focus on the few attacking the capital while the space attack commenses. when padamé says its up to the gungans to draw the droids out of the city- thats all you need because its stated- we dont need to see it. just like we didnt need to see bothan's steal the death star plans.
please note also: padamé's voice is hard to hear when this scene first starts.. its faded out.

- trimming of the gungan droid naboo battle, and more of fighters attacking the federation blockade in orbit
im subjecting myself to lucas' *cough* film again as i write this to see what might be possible... the scene of padamé allowing the pilots getting to their fighters is nice (but if you get rid of the gungan droid battle you can also loose the Neimdians saying 'activate the droids'
if youre able to use more of the space battle minius anakin and moron pilot statements with seemless music and the blasters/ explosions still in it, it would be much more thrilling (i think) then the gungan battle. then you have padame/obi-wan/ space battle.. which is less hectic.. they obviously tried to 'one-up' return of the jedi by having four battles instead of three and it just ... fails... i really dont think we need the gungans at all really.

if you worked the federation blockade ship exploding back in- it would look like they captured padamé but that her group was just a ruse for those in space to smash the embargo. id rather see more of the space battle sans anakin then the ground battle to be honest. also by showing the ship explode you give a reason for gunray to still be so pissed 10 years later where you left the scene in of him wanting padamé's head.

after the pilot mentions the shield generator
there are some scenes of the fighters firing on the federation ship
if you take the scene right after anakin fires on the generator- its a nice clean shot of the generator just exploding. if you cut out anakin and the Neimdians scene there- it goes right into a chain reaction across the ship from outside- ((also cut out the pilots saying 'whats that? its blowing up from the inside' and 'we didn't hit it')) and it would make the pilots look competitent.

- i agree with sketchrob
changing the Neimdians to an alien voice (allowing you to change their dialogue to reflect the ENSLAVEMENT beat you added) would help

- (Personal preference) the gungan speaking at the battle on naboo- again, speaking in an alien voice either with or without subtitles (if you decide it has to stay in).

-one of the other fan edits i saw- kept the scene in of obi wan speaking with the librarian and him showing her where a planet should be and her saying if its not in our files then it doesnt exist. (if this can be there without mentioning the dart it gives a little more focus on obi-wan). the other fan edit then just had obi-wan going to where the planet should be and it came off very smoothly, logical, and competitent on obi-wan's part.

-there is also a great deleted scene of obi-wan and mace talking as obi-wan gets in his ship- where he points out anakins short comings and agreeing with mace and yoda that anakin was too old to begin training. it does mention anakin is obi-wans padawan though, so i dont know if you would like that. then he gets in his ship and goes to the cloning planet.

- i agree with others on not giving dooku or yoda purple sabers

- cleaning up some of the edits especially the voices...

- i watched the avi version but many times the voices were drowned out.. either as an edit was made or by music swells.

i like the idea of amadalla speaking with palaptine about the chancellor AND i also like your cut cause in the senate scene it looks like hes using the jedi mind trick on her. if you can edit the other scene so it looks like hes only giving directions with here not saying anything back (or only use her dialogue so it sounds like shes being mesmerized) that would be awesome

fantastic fantastic job. im hoping for these changes ... i want this to be my difinitive version of the prequels..

you gave it what it was missing- a central character /focus

the way anakin is presented is great as well.

Currently on vacation for the holidays, so I'm away from my workstation and unable to physically work on any edits. However, here's more of my thoughts for the V2 cut of SOTOR:

EP1 Chapter
lairilwa: As I said in an earlier post, I'm actually trying to cut Jar Jar out completely from the EP1 segment (so Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan never meet him and he doesn't lead them to the Gungans).
(and the audio will be a lot clearer for the new edition - the reason why the voices were so low was due to the standard settings in Vegas for exporting 5.1 ac3 files - I'm now using new custom settings which gives much better results for my 5.1 mixes)

I'll be using the color-corrected video files from my recent V2 of AOTF edit (I just wish the film of EP1 wasn't so damn grainy....)

EP2 Chapter - new changes
1. I'm definitely looking into using the "Droid Analysis" deleted scene - from the work on my more recent edits, I've learned a lot about rebuilding and remaking sountracks, so I'd love to replace the droid's voice and dialogue so that I can change the "toxic dart" into a part of the device that blew up Queen Corde Amidala's ship.
(and if I can include that scene, I'll also be including the "Jedi Library" scene from my EP2 fanedit)

2. Looking into using the delete scene of Obi-Wan and Mace - it does add more charactization to both Obi-Wan and Mace, plus it gives a bit more information on Anakin and how Obi-Wan sees that maybe training him too young has led to his young apprentice becoming a bit arrogant.

3. Not sure if I also want to include the scene of Anakin talking to Padme in her apartment before they leave to Naboo, but if I do, I'll probably keep it the same as I edited it in my EP2 Twilight of the Republic fanedit.

EP3 Chapter - new changes
1. I DO want to give Yoda a purple lightsaber, which would again serve (as it did in my Prequel trilogy) as a visual symbol that both he and Mace are on the highest level of the Jedi Order (plus then Mace wouldn't be the only one to have a purple lightsaber in the story)

As for Dooku.... I'm still not sure fully sure about it, but I'm probably gonna keep the character a Sith for this fanedit - unlike my EP2 and Ep3 fanedits, we never really learn much about Dooku in the story of SOTOR and turning him into a rouge Jedi like he was in my Twilight of the Republic edit only complicates the story more than it needs to be.

sounds awesome jason

since we have an 'alien' battle with the wookies at the end what about the idea of cutting the gungan battle altoghter and just going with the space battle (minus anakin and moron pilot statements) huh huh?

please oh please?

:D

i just saw the composite work on the locked thread for your seperate trilogy movies jason.

impressive. most impressive.
looks fantastic. great job!
i too hated that it took them 20 years to build the first death star
and only 3 to build the second. especially when the second one was done in secret. having vader and the emperor survaying their new empire was much cooler.

which do /you/ consider the superior work?
this combined 3-in-1 movie about obi wan? or your 3 seperate movies?

i think there is barely one decent story to tell in your shadows of the old republic. so im curious which one you feel is the definitive star wars.

I'm back home now and back working on the V2 Cut. :)

lairilwa: That's kinda hard to answer, since I'm still working on the V2 of SOTOR and have a bunch of new edits for it that weren't present in the first cut of the fanedit - obviously, you're gonna get a lot more more story and character development in the prequel trilogy (since it has a longer runtime) and I did a lot of new edits to each of the Episodes to improve the story (made Dooku a rogue Jedi fighting to destroy Sidious, using deleted scenes to better develop the Anakin/Padme relationship, etc), but I think SOTOR's narrative is a bit more refined/focused since it's centered more on a single character (Obi-Wan) and it cuts a LOT of the dumb crap present throughout all 3 of the Prequels (although there are a lot of cuts to the EP2 and EP3 segements which I also ended up using in my Prequel trilogy).

As for myself.... my favorite of my SW edits is Attack of the Federation - I know I lot of people have been giving more sh*t to TPM since RedLetterMedia released his video review of it (which is mostly deserves), but for me personally, I feel that the core elements of EP1 and my fanedit of it feels closer to the mood and spirit of the OT than any of the other Prequel films that came after it.

Sounds like good news. I watched your original SOTOR at a point when I was really frustrated with prequel edits because I just couldn't find one that I liked enough. SOTOR was a breath of fresh air. It's admirable that you're going back to it with your newly honed skills.

I just wanted to wish you good luck. We're all counting on you.

I some-what enjoyed your first go at this JasoN and may take a look at the eventual V2. My biggest gripe was the shift from the end of Episode I to II, but that has always been Lucas' problem (and IMO one of the biggest mistakes of the trilogy). I know you won't be doing what I'm about to say, but the only way I can think that would make the first movie plausible to include in an edit such as this is to feature it in flashbacks. Unfortunately, there is no real good way of doing this as none of the three movies really are connected in a way other than the characters. That's why the OT will always be superior, as you can convincingly watch those three movies back to back to back and have a cohesive story, while with the PT you just have three stories that happen to feature the same characters (more or less).

I'm honestly not a big fan of flashbacks in stories (with the big exception being the tv show Lost), but more important than that, including flashbacks/flashforwards were never a narrative device used in the SW films before and I really don't want to included them in my SW edits as I think they would feel out of place with the original trilogy that came before it (if this is a prequel story to Star Wars, then it doesn't make much sense to me to include a prequel within a prequel).

Oh I completely understand that, I was just saying that IMO that is the only way that I could conceive getting the footage from Episode I to work seamlessly. But as you noted that is completely not what Star Wars is, however, it could make for a very interesting Episode III edit. Say someone took Episode III and made it with Lost style flashbacks using I and II as source. It could make for an interesting and stylistic idea (and might make ROTS a little more tolerable in the process :-D ). But I just kind of was showing my frustration at Lucas' seemingly inept story-telling techniques in the prequels.

A few minor updates:

- tried looking into giving the Trade Federation a possible "alien language" (since they're not in many scenes in this edit, unlike my Prequel edit trilogy), but it's looking like a "No-Go".... I'm pretty limited as to what 5.1 audiotracks I have for SW DVDs (only the English track on the R1 DVD is 5.1) and I don't want to use alternative audio tracks from other fanedits like the MagnoliaFan edit because the alien language audio mixes that they used/created are so damn bad and choppy to me that I feel there's no way that I could make a proper 5.1 surround mix from them.

- I'm back on the fence on using the deleted "Obi-Wan/Mace" scene from EP2 and I'm probably not going to use it in SOTOR - one of the things that I originally liked about this edit was the idea that Obi-Wan and Anakin really didn't know each other until the Clone Wars and that Anakin only became his pupil when it began (most of this deleted is spent on Obi-Wan and Mace talking about Anakin, which doesn't really make much sense if he's not Obi-Wan's student at that point of the story)

- as I said before, I am keeping Leia's birth at the ending of this edit as Luke's twin (unlike my Prequel trilogy) - however, unlike Luke, I will not include her being named by Padme.

- in the deleted scene of Bail Organa and Mon Mothma discussing the Loyalists with Padme and other senators, I've given a slight pitch shift to Mon Mothma's voice to make her sound a bit younger (I never understood why Lucas didn't make her seem younger in these scenes than what she was in ROTJ...)

The EP2 and EP3 chapters have been finalized with all the cuts/edits in place and runs close to 2 hours long, but I'll be giving it another editing pass sometime in the next few days (the only major edit that needs to be done for EP2 is to finish up the analyst droid's new voice for the deleted "Dart Analysis" scene, so that the 'dart' is now a type of detenator used to kill Queen Corde Amidala and the droid tells Obi-Wan that it originates from the planet Kamino). I've also been able to refine additional scenes which I wasn't able to previously using new audio skills that I've obtained, including having Anakin finally refer to Owen as his brother (using audio taken from Anakin's "Huttese" greeting to Watto, who's never seen or heard from in this edit, and new subtitles for Anakin) and Yoda stating to Mace that Dooku has joined the Dark Side when Obi-Wan reports the Separatists Army to Palpatine and other senators.

The EP1 chapter is about 1/3 done and is taking longer to finish as it's the main part of the original fanedit that I felt needed to be improved the most in terms of pacing and editing: new edits to the first chapter include NO Jar Jar Binks whatsoever (he's been 100% removed from the story), additional dialogue between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon at the beginning, reinserting the scene between Queen Amidala and Senator Palpatine before they visit the Senate, and more scenes of the Naboo space ships fighting against the Trade Federation control ship.

For those that have never seen my previous SOTOR cut, here's a preview of the end of EP2 and the story transition into EP3:

New preview from the beginning of the EP2 chapter which includes my new redub of the analysis droid from the deleted "Dart Analysis" scene, which rewrites the toxic dart in a type of explosive device called a "dredlink detenator" (which was used to asassinate Queen Corde Amidala) and had the droid tell Obi-Wan that it originates from the specialists on Kamino:

Great job with the new dialogue! Very nicely matched. (Although I thought the music overpowered the quiter dialogue a tiny bit, but I don't know if this is a final version.)

There is one oddity though...the droid is there to help Obi-Wan, ("How may I be of service?") but at the end says, "Thank you for your time, Master Kenobi." as though the droids were just done a favor somehow. :-?

Yeah, I realized that after I finished uploading the video to Vimeo that it sounded a little off - I'll change the end dialogue to something different tomorrow like "I hope I was of service to you, Master Kenobi" or something like that.

About 95% of the EP1 segment is finished, just some additional edits and tweaks are left (as well as rendering a new title crawl).

I'm very much satisfied with how the V2 cut is turning out over the original V1, especially with the first chapter and new scenes and audio edits which gets the story much closer to what I originally wanted the fanedit to be. Taking some of lairilwa's suggestions to heart, the EP1 part of the edit now features:

- NO GUNGAN BATTLE SCENES: the audience only sees them line up and form their shields while the droid tanks fire away; after that scene, we never see the Gungans again (which is appropriate, considering that they're only a "diversion force" for Padme's group and space fighters

- many more scenes of the Naboo space fighters battling (and winning) against the TF Droid control ship

- Padme and her group outwitting and capturing the TF Viceroy
