The Empire magazine 2-hour spoiler-special podcast on STB is very good...

Pegg talks about having chosen to never even read Roberto Orci's discarded screenplay for STB and Justin Lin is working on a 'Lone Wolf and Cub' adaptation! They both talk alot about all the backstory they created to inform the characters in STB.

Nice recommendation!   I did not realize how short of a pre-production they had on this movie (less than 3 months!!!), it makes some of the weakness (Krall's backstory, abilities and technology) of the story more understandable.   But honestly, most of the plot holes I missed the first time I watched as I was so drawn into the adventure...LOL.

Unfortunately, it seems this latest adventure is not connecting well with audiences as the box office had a 60% drop off by its second weekend.  Too bad, as I think it is still a wonderful adventure that really gets to the heart of Trek.

While I really want a Trek 4 after watching this one, I agree with the podcast that the idea of bringing back Chris Helmsworth seems like a bad idea.

SPOILERS, I guess, maybe, meh.

TVs Frink said:
Well crap, I was excited by the reviews but I found this to be really disappointing, by far the worst of the three reboot movies.  There were some good parts, but overall it was meh to annoying. Way too much action, especially because it was all shaky-cam and confusing closeup choreography. Idris Elba was completely wasted in this film, unfortunately. And it was too long. One of those movies where I kept hoping it would get better but it never really did.

Bummer.

I agree, hombre.

... No, I'll go further. Lots further.

Its utter lack of substance makes it a mediocre movie. The earsplitting cacophony, incomprehensible action,  and non-existent story make it - and the headache is fresh, sure, but I really don't think I'm being hyperbolic here - one of the worst movies I've ever seen. As in, it made me long for the relative tranquility and old-school movie magic of Terminator Genisys. Into Darkness may have killed off my affection for '09, but at least there was some kind of story there, epically misguided as it was. What's the story here? MACO turned Starfleet captain becomes space vampire, finds a gooey black weapon, decides to blow up an entire starbase... to make humanity better, because the movie needs a knockoff Reman? That might have worked as the basic outline for an episode... but this movie was so violent, such an assault on the senses, such an act of anti-audience aggression that it frankly seems hypocritcal of it to make Krall the villain, because in aesthetic and spirit, unleashing wanton violence upon an innocent audience for our own theoretical good is exactly what this garbage is selling. There is no story here, zero character growth (no, surprise-free circling is not growth), just bombast Michael Bay might find excessive and mindless.

And it is really, really garbage. None of the crew banter goes any deeper than sitcom cliche-level superficiality. The Spock-Uhura relationship stuff is, three movies in, thunderously uninteresting. Scotty's constant use of "lassie" should get him demoted, if not court-martialed on sexual harassment charges. The continued use of transporters as sheer magic (twenty people at a time, my ass) is really not that far removed from JJ's interplanetary beaming. How the hell does this movie dare to ask me to be worried about Kirk being sucked into space or into a big fan when a centuries-old transporter can get a lock on a person and someone they happen to barely touch no matter how fast they're moving, in different directions? And, far more importantly, the complete and utter lack of any mourning for the Enterprise KIA, of which there must be dozens, is borderline obscene. "Scores of our fellow crew were just slaughtered, ha ha ha, let's all have celebratory drinks and go back to the 'fun' out there!" Sod you, movie.   :(

In fairness: I still like this cast, kind of, maybe, and maybe Pegg did the best he could on an extreme time constraint, but Lin should be ashamed of himself for filmmaking this garish and hateful, and if he returns for more I don't think I'll even rent the result. If I had rented this, I sure as hell wouldn't have finished it. (And the pre-show commercials and previews were also unacceptably ear-splitting. F--- AMC; I'm done with those a--holes. It's Alamo Drafthouse or home projection for me from now on, and there are maybe one or two movies per year I can't wait a few months to see for a Redbox buck or two at home. $13 a pop for this shit? "This far, no farther," indeed.)

Believe me, amigos, I grew up on the bridge of the Enterprise, so it gives me no pleasure whatsoever to call a Trek movie garbage, the worst of the lot by far, and give it an F, but I must stay true to my principles. Oh, and Paramount: it's not enough to just pay lip service to humaneness amidst a two-hour nails-on-chalkboard travesty. You also have to make an entertainment that doesn't seem to actively hate me, and that actively encourages me to hate life. (Unsuccessfully, I'm happy to note, but boy, did it try.)

And, uh, yeah, the bit with the picture at the end was nice. So... F+, maybe? Is that a thing? Can I do that? I think I'll boldly go, and I will.

F+

I saw it today and really liked it, hell I kinda loved it. Sure the dialogue was superficial and the action shakey, but I had fun and loved the storyline.

Hey @Gaith we should go see a flick at the Drafthouse sometime soon.

Yes, Gaith, you went a lot further than I have any intention of going.

I love '09, I really enjoy STID, and I was very disappointed in Beyond.  But I've seen a billion worse movies.

Would that I were. Both Genysis and Beyond are worthless dreck, with one-dimensional characters and action sequences so overblown that nothing has any impact. (I refuse to believe that Scotty or Simon Pegg, whichever, have the strength to pull themselves up from a cliff like that. If our main cast can survive anything, than they're never in any danger, and we're just watching space battle porn.) But at least Genysis wasn't full of gratuitous Dutch angles and McG-style cutting. True, Genysis had the worse, completely unredeemable script, whereas Beyond's script (all forty pages of it), could have, with calmer, more old-school direction, made a passable popcorn flick. Instead, Lin delivered an all-out attack on the senses.

Respectfully, hombre... yes, I think you're confused, in that you don't seem to understand my perspective one bit. As the late, great Roger Ebert (who I'm certain would have hated this movie) liked to say, in a phrase he called Ebert's Law, "A movie is not about what it is about. It is about how it is about it." And as I said, yeah, Beyond pays lip service to all that humanist Trek stuff in about two total minutes of dialogue - but the how of the movie is an agonizing, narratively vapid succession of explosions, horrible deaths, laser fights, more explosions, more horrible deaths, more laser fights, shouting and psychotic small furry creatures, shouting and psychotic aliens, a shouting and angry ally, people getting the life horribly sucked out of them onscreen, a woman getting disintegrated as Uhura cries and begs for mercy, a monster getting up in Uhura's personal space as she whimpers in mortal fear, laser battles, explosions, driving a ship off a cliff, more explosions, fistfights, attempted mass murder, the villain getting disintegrated, and our crew celebrating how "fun" and awesome space travel is just days after dozens of their comrades were slaughtered.

So, yeah, this movie is about deafening violence, rage, fear, and hatred. I honestly bet Biff Trumpen would love it. :s

Star Trek movie recap time!

Generations: a human wants to destroy a solar system because he's an addict looking for a fix. After a fistfight, he dies a fairly quick explosion death. (I actually really like this one.)
First Contact: a gooey humanoid wants to assimilate the Federation and maybe bone Data. After a struggle, she dies a horrible, screaming disintegration death.
Insurrection: a disfigured humanoid with a massive ship wants to destroy a planet with space radiation because REVENGE! After a fistfight, he dies horribly in fire.
Nemesis: an increasingly disfigured human clone with a massive ship wants to destroy the Federation with space radiation because REVENGE! After a fistfight, he's impaled and dies horribly.
'09: a tatted humanoid with a massive ship wants to destroy the Federation with space radiation because REVENGE! After a fistfight, he dies horribly in a black hole disintegration.
Into Darkness: a humanoid with a massive ship wants to start a massive war and then smash up San Francisco because REVENGE! After a fistfight, he's indefinitely frozen by our heroes, which is tantamount to execution.
Beyond: a disfigured humanoid with a massive swarm of ships wants to destory the Federation with space goo because REVENGE! After a fistfight, he's ejected into face, and dies horribly from disintegration.

Conclusion: this film franchise is broken. Time to put it down and return to TV indefinitely, if - if - the series must continue at all. After the last four movies, I'm far from sure of that.

Hot damn, the score to the movie is magnificent! I've had it on a loop and I'm playing it right now. It's got a very John Barry feel to it IMO. To pick just one piece...

^ Absolutely beautiful! LOVE IT!

This one made me smile with it's nod at the 57mark back to TOS and Kirk's many over the top fists fights... LOL

Wooo! That was great! I loved STID, but Beyond was fantastic. The Bones / Spock / Kirk trifecta was BACK! It felt like TOS. Live long and prosper.

Finally got around to seeing this film this film the other day, and I gotta say can we please have Simon Pegg wright more of these?  The characters and plot truly had the vibes of original, classic Trek, something I never quite felt in the first two films.  (I'll maybe go more into this on a later post.)

Sure it's far from perfect, but I'd rather not focus on those things.  The issues in this film, I'm sure someone here can mostly fix in a fanedit.

So hell yeah, please bring on more of these!  Just please DO NOT hire Justin Lin again, the action was very underwhelming.

But man, I'm going to miss Anton so much.   I loved his Chekov and I was so glad they gave him more screentime.  It saddens and angers me to see a young man with still so much potential die, especially at the fault of a company that clearly puts making a profit over safety of their customers.
