Go home, Paramount. You're drunk.

I believe you're referring to this, which has been on YT for several days? ;)

These upscalers can be impressive but I still see way too many artifacts in them for it to feel natural and not simply distracting.

I'd certainly up for giving streaming subscribers the choice between an SD stream of the "original" shows and an AI-upscaled HD one. But, if this here post is to be believed (and, based on how awful the Netflix stream looks, I'm inclined to), the current SD streaming content is significantly worse than even the SD DVDs.  :(

Just give me a properly mastered stream of the tapes and I'm good.  The AI stuff that adds detail in always looks off to me.

This is another slightly more insane video from the same campaign, shared yesterday. I can't find it on YouTube anywhere, so here's another link to the same video on Twitter in case you can't see the one on Facebook:

I'm watching DS9 "The Assignment" and O'Brien is communicating with the computer to retrieve information and set coundtdown timers in his quarters where he doesn't want Keiko to hear and on the promenade where I can't believe he could hear the computer talking to him......unless everyone has an internal computer link in their universal translator.....When they talk to the computer do they only hear it? Has anyone else noticed/thought this? It's an interesting idea that I had never had until today.

Honestly that makes a whole hell of a lot of sense. We've seen both "speaking to air" and "hitting a button to speak" variants, but there are definitely times where it's unclear where the computer is speaking back to them from. Default is personal universal translator, but maybe it has automatic "group functions" when it's like an away team asking? There are definitely times groups of people hear the response.

The Next Generation - "Conundrum" (5x14, 1992)

tng_conundrum_hd_087.jpg

"Conundrum" is a ridiculously entertaining bottle episode. Riker and Ro Laren have a consensual, unapologetic hook-up, and inter-crew relations are a rarity in the Berman Trek era. (Okay, so there is some selective amnesia at play, so it's not 100% consensual, but it's pretty darn close.) And the story, while logically iffy (an alien has the power to mess with the computer and memories of the whole ship, but has antiquated weapons?), builds to an excellent showcase of a moral dilemma. Also gold: Worf assuming he's the captain because he has the most chutzpah, and just about everyone else, Picard included, willingly deferring to him until proved wrong. All in all, an excellent Trek.

Grade: A-

Not a lot of details still, but apparently the upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy series developed for Nickelodeon will actually premiere on Paramount+ before later airing on Nick. I had previously expected that it would air on Nick and then show up the next day on Paramount+. We also got a brief description of the series, but it's nothing we didn't already know. The main piece of news is the teaser image we got showing the main characters.

A first-look image of the Star Trek: Prodigy bridge crew was also released today.  In Prodigy, six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek franchise, but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. Kate Mulgrew was previously announced as reprising the iconic role of Captain Kathryn Janeway to lead this brand new Prodigy bridge crew.

This was posted 11-years ago so maybe everybody else has seen it but this short fan-made demo reel shot is blowing my mind:

It makes the TOS bridge look so much less dated but at the same time feels like it hasn't changed. I keep rewatching it and spotting more details. Plus that's a really complicated camera move to motion track.

Glorious fun! Mike vs Jay Star Trek trivia:

I played both rounds and only scored by getting the answer before Mike (although on many of them if I'd had an hour on each answer I still wouldn't have got them) resulting in:

1st Round: -$4000
2nd Round: -$8000
Final round: Bet it all on the last round question and got it right but like Jay didn't understand the rules: -$24,000

I didn't keep track of my score, I mostly got the Voyager questions wrong. I can't go back and replay since I remember all the answers now. There were a few Original Series questions I was shocked Mike didn't get (the ship and the girl's name).

Of all the films and episodes of anything out there, this scene hits me in the feels the way only a handful of others do... and this HD upscale, while imperfect, looks quite nice:

Deep Space Nine - "Doctor Bashir, I Presume?" (5x16, 1997)

Doctor_Bashir_I_Presume.jpg

I've only seen a handful of DS9 episodes, and some of those were so long ago I've mostly forgotten them. But, because this one is the only one to feature Robert Picardo (and one of only four to feature the EMH's creator, Dr. Lewis Zimmerman - or only two "in the flesh", and not holographic representations thereof), I finally gave it a spin. Turns out, unlike Voyager's "Life Line", which is centered around Zimmerman, the episode is mainly about Bashir, and centers around a character-redefining revelation.

So: the Bashir stuff is great. The Zimmerman stuff is plenty amusing; Picardo is always delightful. Roughly a third of the episode, however, however, concerns a Ferengi named Rom who is Bartender Quark's younger brother, and his crush on a comely casino staffer, and boy howdy, is this terrible sitcom-style cringe. Interesting how the series can fit such first-rate and fourth-rate writing into the same hour. (Granted, I lack the context of how these characters may have been developed throughout the rest of the show, but even solid dramatics elsewhere wouldn't redeem said rubbish.) I might just fan edit this episode to remove as much as Rom as possible, even though this would also necessitate axing several very enjoyable Picardo scenes.

Grade: B. (Hypothetical fan edit grade: A-)

It's about damn time: ‘Star Trek’ Creator Gene Roddenberry Biopic In Works

2d1d6a135678bb766110498ec511b361.jpg

Here’s some news that’s fitting for a day that would be Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry’s 100th birthday.

Roddenberry Entertainment has been working quietly on a feature biopic of the sci-fi TV icon, and there is a script by Adam Mazer, whose credits include the Emmy-winning script for the 2010 HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack which starred Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Kevorkian.

Producers include Star Trek caretakers Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth, who executive produce all current franchise series including Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Picard. Next up the development will be finding a director and actors.

There’s no shortage of subject matter surrounding Roddenberry, the fighter pilot-turned-LAPD cop-turned-TV writer who survived two plane crashes and the rough waters of Hollywood to create Star Trek, one of the world’s most enduring sci-fi franchises...

A Roddenberry biopic has been on my list of desired movies for at least a decade. Left unsaid by the above article is whether this will be done in cooperation with Paramount, and thus whether they'll be able to show the making of TOS, with recognizable Trek props, costumes, etc., or stop shortly before that. I could see either way working, or even a two-film duology.
