Running Scared - True Crime Edition by Elbarto1

review by boon23

Prologue:
The original Running Scared (2006) entertained me, yet it was a mixed experience of great moments and scenes that did not work too well and pulled me out of the movie. I though liked it and was pretty much interested in how this fanedit would affect the flow of the movie.
Since I had the honor of previewing the first release, I skipped through what was changed now, so I did not watch this complete version. I might have missed a glitch or a little error, but my checking pretty much completed my impression.
As for all my reviews: this is just my personal opinion of this fanedit. I cannot tell anybody else, if he or she will experience it in the same way or the opposite. So my review is not objective and does not reflect the opinion of fanedit.org.

!!!!This review contains heavy spoilers!!!

The edit:
Starting with a nice self created intro I directly got into the mood for this fanedit and it takes off pretty fast and very to the point. The original beginning intro was a good choice to remove. And that is true for about all the other choices as well, the pacing is great and makes the entire movie a lot more consistent. Especially taking out the pedophile scene was an important one. I was really happy to see that all the issues I had plotwise with version 1 have been corrected in this version, even the final shootout is now a lot more bearable.
The drama ending and to never reveal the undercover cop thing is still a bold choice and works a bit so-so IMO. It does not make the movie worse than it was before, yet this drama finale turns the movie into an all-the-effort-for-nothing-experience and I think this does not really support the mood of the movie. The original ending is a bit lame, yes, but it is consistent with the flow of the movie.
The original: bad - good - bad - good - bad - good (bad things happen and are turned into better situations resulting in a happy ending).
the fanedit: bad - good - bad - good - bad - very bad (bad things happen, the character struggle hard to improve on their situations, which works, until more bad stuff happens and they work on it again and then finally all fail).
Edit-wise the ending works and it also reveals no plothole (nice still :)). It just left me in a strange mood.
The entire editing job was really well done. I did not notice any hard audio or video cuts. The music choices were great.
This was a good fanedit and I enjoyed watching it.
editing: 9 of 10,
entertainment: 7 of 10

Image and video quality:

The video quality was vastly improved from version 1, but is still not perfect. Especially in the beginning there are some ghost images and a bit of stuttering in movements, but it's not too annoying, just noticeable. The image was sharp and clean (did you recolor that icehockey scene?).
Video quality: 6 of 10

Audio editing and audio quality:
The audio editing was very good. It is 448 ac-3 6 channel surround sound and as that it was perfect.
audio editing: 10 of 10
audio quality: 10 of 10

presentation:
The DVD comes with an animated main menu and offers scene selection as only extra. The main menu looks ok and fitting, the scene selection menus are a beauty. All menus are with great sound that put you in the right mood to watch the movie. Some people don't like it, when there are scenes that reveal parts of the movie, but it did not bother me. The fanedit comes with cover art and disc art, both are beautiful.
DVD menus: 8 of 10, cover and disc art 10 of 10, extras: 1 of 10 (none included), existence of menus, chapters and cover art: 10 of 10

This results in a 7 of 10 rating from me for presentation.

Final result: 8 of 10.
This is a good fanedit. It indeed does improve on the original and makes it a nice and thrilling watching experience. People who like crime and action movies (with an emphasis on ACTION) should not miss this one. Congratulations, elbarto1 and thanks for sharing it and letting me enjoy it.

a rating of 6/10 for the video seems severe, boon - could you elaborate?

Wow, I am so very pleased that you enjoyed this effort.

I agree that the video quality really is shitty in the opening gun battle. Its odd though because the video is quite pristine in other areas as if it was an intentional choice of the director. regardless, I did try to improve it but had a difficult time with the scene in question.

The image was sharp and clean (did you recolor that icehockey scene?).

I used a combination of subtle color correction and video noise reduction in TMPGEnc which may have appeared more apparent during the "blue" ice hockey fight scenes.

I really appreciate the review and and thank you for all your help in the creation of this edit.

nothing severe. 6 of 10 means it was better than average but had a few issues. It's really watchable.

I am pleased to be able to review Elbarto's firstling release here on FE, Running Scared: True Crime Edition.

Crime capers gone wrong are always fun for me and that's basically what you get here. The film itself is kind of uneven, mostly because of the director's predilection for flash camera movements, but it is overall not too bad. It's kind of seems the director had aspirations of making a Guy Ritchie type of film but couldn't quite pull it off.

Elbarto nicely integrated his title into the existing one and the movie starts off quickly. There are no real technical problems to speak of in the body of the film, audio or video editing-wise. It has suggested the picture could be better, but it did not present to much of a problem for me. I saw no significant plot-holes. Good job with the end credits too.

The ending was the only major problem. It just sort of ends with no real resolution, although I suppose one could say it means crime does not pay. The real problem is the shot on which it ends freezes in an odd place. I think a better solution could be found for this.

Other than that, a very solid edit technically. The limitations of the original prevent it from being a masterpiece of a film. It has some good moments but the director is surely no Orson Welles. Elbarto's work here shows promise, a solid firstling. With better material to work with I am certain he will produce some really great work on FE.

Nicely done.

Wow, Thanks JMB I really appriciate you taking the time to watch and review my edit. I agree with all of your points but feel the need to clarify one:

The original film has this sappy ending where directly after my "odd freeze frame fade out" the wife is at Joes "funeral" and then she drives to her new home in the country where Joe is revealed to be still alive and he hugs the kids and everything is a-ok.

I tried 10 different endings and nothing worked great, I originally wanted to end it in the diner just as the Pimp fires the gun leaving the ending open to imagination, but the one I settled on (I felt) was the best of the lot. Theres just nothing else to work with in this film (that I could think of) that would give it a more "solid" ending.

Anyway, I appriciate your time and review JMB. Thanks!

Ha ha ha! Of course... gotta love Hollywood.

I didn't have a big problem with it ending where it did (actually I thought he deserved to die). Just that with it being so abrupt in a story sense, coupled with the visuals of the frozen shot, made it seem a little weird.

Perhaps slowing down the overhead shot and doing a fade or washout as the shot freezes?

Or you could go the "No Country for Old Men" route. Go from a shot of Joe dying in the car right to black. It might seem more purposeful that way.

But it's a minor quibble anyway. Congratulations on your firstling!

The first fanedit I downloaded off of this site was this. And it was excellent. I really liked the original one and I may of liked this one even more, just for the fact that there wasn't a happy ending.

Editing:
Having seen the original a couple of months ago, I couldn't really tell what you edited or where. I knew there was a pedophile sequence but watching yours, I couldn't tell where it'd go.
Editing: 9/10

Entertainment:
Better than the original. I loved that Joe is now a criminal and that there isn't a sappy, happy ending. It works much better this way.
Entertainment: 8/10

Video Quality:
I only watched the .avi file extension -- I put it on a USB Flash Drive and plugged it into my PS3 and watched it on my TV. I didn't really notice any drop in quality. It still looked like the factory DVD. Now to download the DVD version of it.
Video Quality: 8/10

All the editing on the audio was flawless and seamless. It was perfection.

Overall, this was a great edit. It gets a 9/10. It was seamless and took out the main problems I had with the film. I'll definitely be showing people this.

Good work.

Thank you kindly czrchris4! I am very pleased that you enjoyed my version.

I actually loved the pedophile sequence as it was so creepy and well acted but it just felt like a scene from a completely different film, glad to hear you enjoyed it, thanks again!

don't meant to bump an old thread but the links to DL this are for die hard 2, not this.

interesting. i'll get that fixed.
also, the links for running scared are long offline due to 0 interest.
i'll put them back up if you like :)

That would be great if you could. RS if possible since that's what you had before....

no prob i'll get it online tonight

in the interim, the DH2 I made is quite good if I must say

I bought the DVD today for $5 at walmart.
I remember that there may be a thread for Running Scared but I had no idea that it's an EB fanedit!

Especially since Elbarto has all his other edits in his sig, but not this one.

Anyway, I'm downloading this now (RS links look good, yay!)

So shall I watch the retail or FE dvd first? :-?

haha, i removed it from my sig as the list was getting long, i'd say watch whichever first, it doesnt really matter.
thanks for taking an interest.
