Replacing Stereo Audio with 5.1 in Adobe Premiere

Today, I realized that I have been editing my project with stereo audio, even though I have access to 5.1 audio for 98% of the footage that I'm using. For obvious reasons, I set about trying to change that. I exported a 5.1 audio track file and imported it into Premiere just fine.

But I can't figure out how to turn the stereo audio clips on the timeline into 5.1 audio clips. Replace Footage and Replace Clip change the file that the clip uses, but seems to leave it as a stereo clip; it still has only 2 channel volume options, for instance. I tried creating a new sequence with a 5.1 master track and multiple 5.1 audio tracks and copying everything over, but that didn't seem to help.

So, in short, I want to ask if there is any way to replace my project's stereo audio with 5.1 audio without losing the edits that I've already made? I'm still kind of new at using Premiere, so I have a feeling I missed something obvious.

Pretty sure you'd have to recut it. Lay the edited 2.0 track(s) on top so you know where to cut better.

I misinterpreted your question. Sounds like an audio reedit unfortunately. I recommend breaking your 5.1 track into 6 mono tracks for more control over your music/dialogue transitions too.

Not to add any more pressure, but I would prefer 5.1 over 2.0.
