you are correct there, DoctorM.
It is a shortcut to a much more complicated guide that I had found.

i cant get the damn thing to resize!!

loaded file in virtualdubmod
set resize options to 720x480 (lanzcos 3)
launched frameserver
load vdr file into cce
set all options as per boons guide
resize box is tickable but it wont let me change the dimensions (720x576 boxes are just greyed out)

any ideas?

yep, you are using the wrong CCE version.
the new CCE versions see to have a different was fo handling these, so you have to activate resize in CCE fo rit to do that. CCE will go with the framerate for the size, so a 25 framerate movie must be PAL size. Try the resize feature of CCE. I am not sure aboput the output quality though. T-Hope has experienced similar problems.

problem solved. i think T-HOPE mentioned this somewhere.

what you need to do is untick the 'for DVD' option in the mode section this allows you to set any frame rate to any aspect ratio.

In CCE, uncheck "for dvd" and choose for resize (720 x 480) again. This should work.

CCE's "For DVD" option kinda blows for everything.

Anyway, if you used VirtualDub to frameserve you really didn't need to check special options in CCE.

You can set the frame rate, and resize in VDub and CCE should take it from there with no special tweaks.

guide updated.

ThrowgnCpr achieved better results with using DGPulldown first and not last. Good point, because CCE will then treat it as a true NTSC file.

Hi Boon,

Is this the most current guide?

Also could you please recommend some sites to download the required software including which versions?

Cheers! :)

virtual dub mpeg-2 (freeware)
Cinema Craft Encoder
DGpulldown (freeware)
PGCDemux (freeware)

Cinema Craft encoder is not freeware. Otherwise, for the freeware, it doesnt really matter which version. They haven't changed that much. Just get the most recent versions from the websites

and if you need a free good encoder: tmpgenc. Old, slow, but still a great one.

I've followed this guide to the letter, and for some reason the result is always an output file that plays faster than it did as PAL - runtime of 1 hour 56 minutes at 25fps, 1 hour 38 minutes after conversion to 29.97fps. Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

I'm no expert but that sounds about right if going by the math.
1 hour 56 minutes at 25fps = 174000 frames

174000 frames at 29.97fps = 1 hour, 36 minutes and 45 seconds.

174000 frames at 23.976fps = 2 hours, 0 minutes and 57 seconds.

hmmm... I didn't think that there would be such a big difference though.
I must be missing something too :p

no, it's only a ~4% shift going from PAL 25fps to NTSC if you are changing the time

your second math exercise is correct: 1:56.00 PAL25 = 2:00.57 NTSC (23.976) via assumefps

the quick PAL2NTSC method does not interfere with the time at all.
dgpulldown adds half frames to the 25fps allowing it to play at 29.97fps.
1 hour 56 minutes stay 1 hour 56 minutes.
174000 frames become 208591 frames.
