Background
The opening crawl in the 1977 theatrical issue of Star Wars did not include the "Episode IV" subtitle - this was added when the film was re-released in 1981.
Prior to the 2006 DVD release of the original theatrical version, the only way to see the original crawl was on low-quality bootleg VHS tapes containing a telecine of a 1977 print. These could regularly be found at sci-fi and comic book conventions.
Project Details
Two different telecine-sourced bootlegs exist; the most common version has a cropped 4:3 picture and features the mono sound mix. This project is a digital preservation of the second - rarer - version, which has a letterboxed widescreen picture and a mono fold-down of the original Dolby Stereo sound mix.
