Netflix's SAFE

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxywNVLAf5o

A teenage girl goes missing.
A body found in a pool.
And a gated community filled with scandalous secrets.

A pulpy, soapy mystery filled with misdirection, twists and addictive cliffhangers.  Very enjoyable, like reading  trashy paperback on the beach while on summer vacation.  Though I am not certain about Michael Hall's accent?  Regardless, at 8 episodes, it is a satisfying watch.
I've been watching this too as a massive Dexter MH fan I really wanted to like it but I'm struggling with Halll's  accent and the recycled broadchurch on acid plot.  Like you say only 8 episodes so I will persevere to the end and see if my opinion changes...

Yeah, Hall's accent is.... odd?  Or maybe I just can't wrap my head around Dexter being British?  lol

As I said, it is a trashy but fun (for me at least) mystery.  It's not Broadchurch level good, it is more  Midsomer Murders meets Desperate Housewives good.   An engaging, if eventually forgettable, fluffy escape.    :p

Anyone watching Money Heist? Stupid name (I don’t know why they didn’t go with the straight translation of The Paper House), but it’s been an entertaining heist series so far. I was skeptical that a heist could support the long form, but it does. It’s far from perfect and be sure to watch subtitled as opposed to the dubbed version that is the default.

I've heard a lot about Broadchurch. Now that we're cutting cable it's one I'll have to check out.

The first season is very good. It doesn't reach those heights again for me, but give me David Tenant scowling and being grumpy in just about anything and it will entertain me.

Hulu is taking Tha Vampire Chronicles TV series based on Anne Rice's novels:

‘The Vampire Chronicles’ TV Series Sinks Its Fangs Into Hulu

I have a feeling that Bryan Fuller isn't going to have a job anytime soon as he loses yet ANOTHER project (after Hannibal, American Gods, Amazing stories, Star Trek and probably many others). Is this guy too difficult to work with or does he demand absurdly big budgets?

The TITANS for the DC Universe streaming service...
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzvNMJEnT4I

So Robin drops the F-bomb.... I guess that makes this cool and edgy?

I dunno, trailer does not excite me.   Certainly would not pay for a streaming service based on this initial trailer.
Surprised they went with such a dark approach for their "first impression"... I guess because that has worked so well for their movie universe, he says sarcasticly.

Robin costume looks very comics accurate.   Dove looks amazing.   Beast Boy looks okay.  Raven.... looks goth-ish.   Starfire... didin't really get a good look, but she appears to be the most changed from the comics?

I grew up reading the entire Marv Wolfman run and later Geoff Johns relaunch, and while yes, the Titans were always treated seriously and had many very dark stories, there was still a sense of adventure and friendship at its core.  Hopefully this show will capture some of that.  I actually more curious about the DOOM PATROL series will be spinning off from this show.

^ "Hey, nerds! Do you like those Arrowverse shows you can stream for free on the CW web site? Well, you're gonna love this much cheaper and shabbier thing we threw together that you'll have to pay for!" :p

In other news, it looks like the Y: The Last Man show is actually happening, which should be exciting, except it'll star... the dead kid from Dunkirk? Huh? I mean, he was fine in the movie, but... even if his accent is perfect, it's an odd choice, looks-wise.

Not really a new show anymore as it just started its third season, but it may be new for some. Wrecked. Watch it.

Coming to the History Channel....

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4EmfM9isHo

When I first heard this project announced, I was expecting some sort of faux documentary exploitation series like Ancient Aliens, but this.... this looks very intriguing.

My Scully/Mulder itch may finally get a good scratch.

Has anyone watched The Sinner? We watched the first few episodes last night. I had never even heard of it prior, but it has sucked me in. It’s billed as a whydunnit as opposed to a whodunnit.  Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman star.

When they first announced that CBS was doing a remake of my one of favourite shows, I expressed my overly protective grumpy old fanboy concerns...

Last night I watched the pilot of of MAGNUM (no comma) P.I.
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMd6Tv-vpt4

I did not hate it.   It's fine.  It is the typical hyper reality, action over real substance, formula storytelling that has made the Hawaii 5-O and MacGyver reboots such a success for CBS.   So if you enjoy those, you will enjoy this too.

As for the pilot specifics, if anything, it feels like the show tried too hard to appease fans of the classic series.  They awkwardly jam packed the 40 minute pilot with almost every key piece of classic Magnum mythology as if to say, "Hey, we know and love the old show too!  So trust us!!!"...wink,wink...

--we got all the Magnum traits... Detroit tiger hat, surf skiing, Zeus and Apollo chasing him, don't call him Private "eye"
--they ripped off the title of the most famous Magnum episode ever (even if it is not used in the storyline?) and flashback to their time in a P.O.W. camp
--they told the story of Magnum losing his Dad
--they very in your face and painfully awkwardly set up Magnum's past almost marriage to Michelle
--they set up his antagonism with Captain (why not Colonel?) Buck Green
--they even gave an origin to the Team Ring

But it all feels rushed and hallow.  It did not feel earned.   It does not feel necessary.  It definitely brought nothing new to the table... well, I guess making Higgins female and a disavowed MI6 agent is new... along with being Magnum's will they/won't they,  I guess she will serve the role as resident super-hacker, since every show needs one these days (damn you Buffy!!!) for exposition and plot move along-device rather than doing real storytelling....

I will probably watch a few more episodes, as there is usually a bit of course correction between pilot and series proper, but my expectations remain extremely low for this series.

Manifest: Don't watch it; it's terrible. Melodramatic, terrible writing, pacing is all over the place. How this got greenlighted is a mystery.

Black Earth Rising: Three episodes in and I'm hooked on this thing. Issues around the Rwandan genocide and the Hague are explored through complex characters. The script does not suffer fools, requiring you to pay attention and work things out for yourself. John Goodman is predictably excellent. There is no rigid format, sometimes we are in the present with the main cast, sometimes we are in the past, sometimes we follow seemingly unrelated characters, sometimes we get Freudian dreams and sometimes we get beautiful animated sequences.

A co-production between the BBC and Netflix. It is written, Produced and Directed by this guy (no joke):

No way!  That’s wonderful.  Legendary performance despite his few seconds in the movie.

Back to the show: you got me on it, I will watch  it.

I am still mulling over the Magnum reboot... I don't know why?  Its really not worth my time, the show is a bland, empty calorie, soulless remake.   Maybe cause the original was so pivotal in my youth, I secretly hoped on some level the new show would work?

Anyway, here is a much better review than I could ever write...

Maybe Hollywood should have gone with the originally proposed continuation approach about Magnum's daughter instead?  :p

PROJECT BLUE BOOK premiered last night on History Channel.

A promising pilot.   Great production values, the 1950s design looks very authentic.   It is filmed in B.C. like the first seasons of X-Files, so it has that same spooky wet misty look.  The cast is solid; always love Neal McDonough!!!

Dark Skies meets X-Files.  A pseudo-historical drama "based on the real Blue Book cases", follows  an Air Force Officer and a civilian Astro-physicist as they investigate U.F.O. reports.

It takes the X-Files dynamic and gives it a fresh, more complex spin since 'The Skeptic' -- the Air Force officer clearly knows something and is hiding it, while 'The Scientist' suspects there is more going on than simple Weather Balloons.  Like the X-Files and Dark Skies, there is a greater underlying Conspiracy afoot.

While the pilot episode was not riveting, or even entirely original, it does set up it's premise nicely and introduces some very intriguing characters.   I will definitely be watching more.
