JAWS - The Sharksploitation Edit by THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

review by boon23

Prologue:
I feel I am a bit late to the party, yet I did not get to watching this fanedit until just today. The last time I watched JAWS is about 5 years ago, so I could get in fresh (which was for this fanedit not so necessary though). Now everyone so far was praising this fanedit, which kind of held my expectations for it very high. I was watching the PAL DVD.

As for all my reviews: this is just my personal opinion of this fanedit. I cannot tell anybody else, if he or she will experience it in the same way or the opposite. So my review is not objective and does not reflect the opinion of fanedit.org.

!!!!This review contains heavy spoilers!!!

The edit:
It's as special as it gets, from the very intro beginning (including a cute Rob Schneider scene) to the very ending (where I was almost waiting for someone to yell "Willy"). This fanedit was not at all created to be taken seriously and that is the fun of it. It takes a masterpiece of movie history and turns it not just to trash, but to an over-the-top watching experience that only works so well, BECAUSE the original is such a well known masterpiece. It has a few thrilling moments, yet thrill is not what it is about. This is about entertainment and surprise. Surprise what happens next and how. It contains loads of gruesome shark killings and also loads of painfully long and akward scenes. But the mix is just right. Now I could have done with less artificial dust that in dark scenes almost looked like it was snowing and I can't say this added anything to the movie that a washed out look would not have added probably better. Yet this is about the only true complaint I have. Other than that there is a scene with a sailor outside, where there is no background nice, which sounds a bit strange and the deleted scenes are a bit too clearly noticable. The orca ending came as surprise and was needed to really get the final blow to tell me that I am NOT AT ALL WATCHING JAWS.
This is a special fanedit and as such it is a piece of fanediting art to me. Daring. Creative. And an incredible load of work. I bow deeply to TMBTM for the concept and the final edit.
Did I love it? No. But I liked it a lot.
editing: 10 of 10
entertainment: 8 of 10 (original 10 of 10)

Image and video quality:

Video quality was good, the image has too much artificial dirt IMO. The deleted scenes were too clearly spottable.
Video quality: 6 of 10

Audio editing and audio quality:
The audio editing was very good, there was one scene, where background noieses should have been added.
audio editing: 10 of 10
sound quality: 7 of 10
resulting in a 9 of 10 for overall audio

presentation:
The DVD comes with a still but nice menu with no sound. The presentation of a drive-in cinema is hillarious. The font for the intro and end credits is something to get used to. It's neatly animated in the beginning. The bonus features are nice addition, although not too much. The chapter menu is very simple. There is fitting cover art attached.
Overall the presentation of this fanedit is very nice.
resulting in a 9 of 10 for overall presentation

Final result: 9 of 10
I recommend watching this fanedit.

Thanks jjrdias and Boon!

And yes the deleted scenes were a pain in the ass to match with the movie. Because they were not very good quality and I had to convert some of them in NTSC (for I worked in PAL) and at the time I did not know too much how converting MTSC to PAL properly, even using DGPulldown (now I have a nice trick to do that with After Effects, see this video copilot tutorial for that: http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/f ... converter/. You'll need to download the preset effect on the same page too.)
Anyway, I tought that, for a grindhouse edit, a perfect picture in any scenes was not that needed (like if the director did not always have the best camera or material on the set). I even sometime added more dust effect to make an alternate scene even less good looking (when Brody talk to the young blond guy at the beach).
About the dust and white and black lines effects I also try to make them very visible when the tension rise (like when we shark is near, when brody recieve the phone call that annoy him, or when Brody is talking loud with the mayor etc... maybe a bit too much sometime, indeed.)

Concerning the scene with that sailor and no background noise: I think I see what scene you tak about Boon, it was that the deleted scene of Brody talking to Ben Gardner I believe. The thing is the original voices sound was so bad and low that I spent a lot of time playing with the volume, treeble and bass of the voices that I think I forgot to add some background noise! But even if I thought about it maybe I would not have added a background noise because I still think the voice are not to clear to understand, so adding a background noise would not help to understand what the characters are saying. But you're right it feels odd to suddenly having the background noise disappear that much.
Happy you like this edit though! :)

And, jjrdias, about a Blade Runner edit, sure that's something I'd like to do; I have some ideas but they're not clear enough in my mind to start a fanedit now.

Hi, yep user merce777 also said the same thing.

Boon, can you do something about this? I did not make the .AVI version so I can't change anything.

Star Wars Grindhouse.....Spacesploitation?

Not sure how it could be done. Even the old original has awesome special effects.

Grindhouse Star wars is now an option for my next fanedit. Although not 100% sure.
(see "TMBTM ideas" thread in the "fanedit ideas" discussions.)

PS: If I make this edit I would need to pay royalties to the guy who made the youtube video I posted above!
here it is again: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQGHFrwl ... L&index=41

I just found this review of my JAWS edit at: http://seriousfix.com/2009/09/19/jaws-t ... -fan-edit/

Here it is (some spoiler inside):
"I was handed this disc from a person who had tears in his eyes. I asked myself, "Self, is he crying because this is so good or so laughable?" Little did I know that when I put the disc in the player I would find out it is a little of both. [Keep in mind I am a huge JAWS fan and I had not idea what the hell I was getting into.]

People, some of you may not know about fanedit movies. Basically they are movies that people take apart and edit back together. This one has scenes from JAWS, JAWS 2, Orca, JAWS 4, various shark programs and some other movies. The editor of this film added many tunes from Beach Boys to Metallica. He even replaced much of the music with what I believe to be his own funky, jazzy, porno, 70's takes on John Williams' score.

Some of the editing of this film is a bit wonky. He made the film repeat in areas for a brief second as if it was skipping on the reel ... annoying. Choices of scenes from other movies didn't always fit and the beach scene where everyone is scared out of the water by two kids and a fake shark fin was turned into a laughable people feast where the shark picks people off one by one ... yet I kind of liked the creativity behind that scene and enjoyed it's quirkiness. There are many edits in this movie, the largest of which being the last scene in the boat where Brody tells the shark to smile. I won't spoil that scene, but I can tell you I was again a bit confused, thrown off and kind of amused ... once again ... at the creative thought behind this scene (in no way would I have guessed any of what he edited together would or could happen).

On a really positive note there are items from the original movie and scenes that were cut out that are added into this and they were nice to see. I understand why Spielberg cut them from the movie, but they were nice to see. The new compositions on the original JAWS music was amusing and I would love to have a soundtrack of it. I would seriously break that music out at a party and love to see the reactions. They have a disco version of the JAWS theme that is every bit as good as the disco version of the STAR WARS cantina disco version. The original music was in this film is the best.

All in all if you find yourself with a copy of this film it is hard to watch and oddly enjoyable at the same time. I believe if you watch it with other JAWS fans you will all be laughing and having a good time. And, oddly enough, after watching this edit you will probably feel ... awkwardly rewarded. The payoff for watching this film is oddly weird-good."

The "funky, jazzy, porno, 70's takes on John Williams' score" was not made by me but by Lalo Schifrin on his "Black Widow" album...

Finally got around to watching this one. Just as fun as the original!
It made me hope for a sharksploitation of Jaws 3D. Maybe some day...

Thanks! :)
About JAWS 3D... Well, you just need to add some scratches and dust to the picture!

Ingenius edit! The only thing that bothered me was that the audio from the original Jaws was culled from the 5.1 remix which has cheap 'n' nasty new foley effects. The worst is shattering of glass when Bruce pimps into the Orca...

Comical foley. Lazy work. New 35mm prints even have this watered-down track. The 2005 DVD included the original OSCAR-winning soundtrack. Are new foley effects EVER as good as the originals? No, not to my knowledge.

Massive kudos to TMBTM, though. Marvelous imagination, good sir!

Given that the purpose of this edit was making a cheap'n'nasty exploitation movie out of Jaws, I'd say those foley effects, as awful as they are, work well enough in context.

I was sooooo looking forward to watching this tonight, but for some reason I can only get part of file 42. Has anyone downloaded this recently? Is it a problem at my end?

I'll check that. Thanks for reporting.

Okay, thank you. I'll try that, but I'm pretty certain it's up to date as it updated regularly before I finished downloading your edit. Can't wait to see it pal. I'm sure it deserves it's awards. :)

No problem for me about part 42. Both NTSC and PAL versions.
Plus I think it was downloaded recently before.
