James Bond

18 months they sat on this… 18 months to polish, clean up plot holes…
Get the feeling there were more than a few “yes” men in there huh!
 
Safin is probably about 18-20 in the opener, which lines up pretty well with his actual age in real life. We are supposed to imagine he was still young and looking for revenge against White after killing his family, so him being a teenager seeking out White makes sense.
 
Here's my final ranking of all 28 Bond films I watched, including the 25 Eon films along with Barry Nelson's 1954 made-for-TV Casino Royale, Larry Niven's 1967 Casino Royale spoof, and Sean Connery's Never Say Never Again.

I mean as I look at all these rankings It’s hard to see how any averages could be meaningful. I see people with more or less my same top five and then *boom* Moonraker at six. For me, there’s just too many Bond films for me to make an accurate list. But I know the ones I love and the ones I hate. I want to revisit the Dalton Bond movies because I can’t say I have strong memories of them but so many here seem to hold them in high regard, but every time I’ve attempted to watch they’ve seemed more dated than the Connery movies to me. I do think an average would be interesting though. I think the most interesting take would be the best Bond actor by the overall success of the movies. For example, I think Connery and Craig have the best overall track record, despite some misfires, while Moore and Brosnan have the worst track record despite having some of the overall best Bond movies.
 
I know that many really like Mr. Dalton, but I found him miserable and wooden. Connery could do no wrong, and Moore I loved from The Saint, so what can I say. Brosnan sat between Moore and Connery for me, just hampered by questionable material in places. Craig...5 movies and I just could not warm to him; to me it was "that chap playing Bond"; I was never drawn in by him despite two of his being in my top 10 - GO FIGURE !

Roll on Mr. Bond / 007, 6 (7, 8 or 9), depending on how and who you count.

Right. My point, though, was to evaluate each actor’s oeuvre as Bond, not how you personally react to each actor as Bond. For example, I think Lazenby isn’t particularly great (nor is he as horrible as many contend) but he has one of the better Bond movies IMO. Similarly, though Goldeneye is great and I generally like Brosnan, I think the overall quality of his run is subpar.

Better. 😂 I still think Moore and Brosnan, while they could be quite good as the character, starred in some utterly atrocious movies. So if easily put others above them. Again, not to say they weren’t good or there weren’t good Bond movies starring them, but on the whole their talents were largely wasted by very subpar movies.
 
My ranking of the Bonds themselves:
  1. Pierce Brosnan
  2. Sean Connery
  3. Timothy Dalton
  4. Daniel Craig
    Barry Nelson
  5. Roger Moore
  6. George Lazenby
    David Niven, et al
 
If I can chime in a sec, I’d say:
Craig (his first three)
Dalton (both his movies)
Lazenby (OHMSS is one really good movie)
Connery (Dr. No and the classic Goldfinger...)
The rest

What I’m starting to notice, not being a big fan of the franchise in general, is that often the movies that stay with me are the ones that tend to stray far from the “Bond formula” and just strive to be a good movie in their own right.
Examples given would be Casino Royale and its two followups (just reinventing Bond from scratch and building it piece by piece toward what is considered the «Bond formula»); OHMSS, which simply deviated in every way from the Connery movies, doing away with much of the technology and focusing on the human story; and the two Dalton movies which, I think, were perhaps taken aback a bit from having to reinvent Bond for the late 80s-90s - mainly because of the need to drift away from the conception of USSR as villainous...
 
…. And then there were THE VILLAINS. 104 of them (at least).

I read this originally waiting for a haircut. It’s a tour de force and surprisingly detailed and considered. Scroll thru to No. 1, and read backwards…

I find I still agree with much of it, and it’s a superb memory jogger.

Craig definitely number one. Then Dalton. Then Brosnan. Then...well everyone else. Who are they again? Couldn't stand Moore. Love Connery, just not as Bond, though a couple of the Bond movies he was in are among the best. Complete opposite for Brosnan. Loved him as Bond but most of the Bond movies he was in weren't so great. Craig was awesome as Bond and all but one of the Bond movies he was in rock. Dalton was a great, albeit different, Bond. Both of his movies are among the best. Who were the other guys?

Bond Themes - Best to worst
  1. Casino Royale - This is the greatest Bond intro theme. Period. The vocals, the lyrics, the instruments, the recording, the orchestration, the chordal progressions, the energy. This is just an amazing song.
  2. Skyfall - Yeah, Adele crushes this one. I like the way she uses the title in the lyrics and well it's Adele. She captures the vintage feel while being modern.
  3. Live and Let Die - One of the best Bond themes
  4. Quantum of Solace - I love the intro riff on this one. I also like the collaboration and how Alicia Keys and Jack White's vocals blend together in the back and forth.
  5. Die Another Day - I don't care for Madonna's music, but she really created something that captured what the visuals of Bond's detainment and torture were showing in a way that kept the story going and not just throwing a theme song at you while the credits displayed
  6. The Living Daylights - Horrid 80's sound, but the chordal progressions and modulations are fantastic. It's also super catchy for an 80's tune.
  7. Goldeneye - Probably the most iconic Bond song, but not the best imho.
  8. The World Is Not Enough - Not the greatest, not the worst. Too dramatic.
  9. Goldfinger - Great vocal power and orchestrations, the chordal progressions are great and the integration of the Bond theme is spot on.
  10. Tomorow Never Dies - This one is up higher just because the recording is a higher quality than the ones that came before
  11. No Time To Die - Not a Billie Eilish fan and this one is just super moody and boring imo
  12. License To Kill - Pure 80's, dark and moody then an upbeat moody chorus. Not my thing
  13. The Spy Who Loved Me - Super schmultzy
  14. The Man with the Golden Gun - Just silly, but it fits the movie perfectly as it's just as ridiculous
  15. Thunderball - Vocals are just too over the top for me. Interestingly, the whole song is basically the main motif of the Bond theme.
  16. From Russia with Love - Great orchestration and transitions
  17. You Only Live Twice - The vocals are great, but I'm just not into the theme on this one.
  18. Spectre - Way too dramatic and a major buzzkill in terms of energy
  19. Moonraker - Snore........
  20. For Your Eyes Only - ugh.....
  21. Dr. No - Love the Bond theme, but the musical transitons are just bad
  22. Never Say Never Again - This era of music is just so cringe
  23. Diamonds are Forever - Possibly my least favorite theme song in the series
  24. Octopussy - I could do without hearing this one ever again
  25. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Without the Bond theme it just sounds like noise to allow credits to be shown
  26. Casino Royale (1967) - Extremely silly, as it should be
  27. Casino Royale (1954) - Yep, there isn't one, but it's still better than A View To A Kill :p
