Brought to us by Jack Marshall (of New Voyages fame (http://www.newvoyage.com)), Star Trek Phase II "In Thy Image" reimagines Final Frontier as a pilot episode for a new Star Trek series.

The version I got my hands on was a PAL DVD .iso with spanish soft-subtitles and a Spanish text prologue. (An on-disc .nfo file had an English translation and indicated that the original English titles are lost).

Editing ST5 into a watchable film is a feat that most of us would figure to be impossible, but like most good edits, was made by someone who legitimately liked the original film on which it was based.

Trimmed to a svelte 63 minutes there was little time wasted on subplots or extended beauty shots of ships, just the main story. It's cut and timed like an extended TV episode with episode-style music and breaks for "commercials".
And it works. It works well.

All the camp and crap that made this a bad movie feels perfect as a lost TV episode. If the actors were younger, wore their old uniforms, and the sets wobbled you might not have noticed the difference.

Except for a few minor instances where trims made rapid jumps in locale or time apparent, you start to ask yourself with an hour missing, was anything actually cut?

Unfortunately (at least my copy) suffered from quality issues. Letterboxed and a bit washed out, the picture lacked any real sense of sharpness you'd expect from a DVD. Weighing in at 1.7gb it's a shame since there was plenty of room to spare. Audio-wise the 2.0 DD track was fairly weak and had me cranking the volume up. But cuts and newly integrated music was flawlessly added.
Of course as always I consider PAL format to be a technical flaw since it runs faster and is pitched higher than the source material.
There were also numerous instances of double image frames that looked like bad blending deinterlace. I can't say if this is the editor's fault or his source.

I would definitely add this to my shelf as a very watchable replacement to ST5, and strongly recommend you track it down.
Frankly I'd like to see this reconstructed in higher quality, (or at least an NTSC fully english disc (yes I'm thinking about it)).

Edit: 4.5/5
Video: 2.5/5
Audio: 3/5
Total (not an average): 4/5

Update 1/22/06:

As noted below the NTSC version is available on MySpleen.com.
Comparing that to the PAL edition reviewed above it should be noted that there is little difference in quality.

The Edit: Jaiman Tuckuh points out that the theme music is different. Additionally, the opening text is English and scrolls rather than the still pages on the previous version.
Video: The opening text contains some bad compression artifacts.
The ghosting/double image artifacts remain and the runtime is unchanged at 1:06 with the framerate reported as 29.97 (video/no pulldown flags).
It seems the source material was probably an NTSC laserdisc or letterboxed VHS tape that was deinterlaced poorly.
The NTSC edition contains more unique frames than the 25 frame PAL suggesting that was indeed the original source. So any additional lines of resolution gained by the PAL version are extrapolated and not a true increase in quality.
Audio: The audio still has a processed/compressed tinny quality.
Extras: Some nice stills and text files are included on this version regarding the original abandoned Phase II project.

Overall, I'd say get the NTSC release unless you speak Spanish. The PAL version gains you nothing in quality, and in fact is a bit jerky because of the 24 -> 29.97 -> 25 frame conversions.

One guestion... How does he do the openning? Is it like a normal episode, where you have a teaser and then the openning (with voice over, trek theme, and list of the main stars)?

The movie opened withg the scene in the desert with the crazy vulcan, and then the opening credits, he just cut it down.

Yup, it opens with the crazy Vulcan (who is no longer referred to as Spock's brother). Then the voice over and newly constructed credits.
I think they are put together from a bunch of the trimmed space shots from the film. I'm not sure though.

You even have text at the return from each "commercial break" saying stuff like "In Thy Image", Act I.

The opening credits sequence was specially made for New Voyages at the time of their first episode Come What May, but it was never used.

I found it on the Come What May DVD.

In Thy Image is a great edit, and makes a horrid movie watchable (Like Batman and Robin De-Assified).

Has anyone seen any other version besides the one mentioned above?
(1.7gb with Spanish titles and subs)
If there is one we should get it out there.

_Recently new threads and posts have been made on the OriginalTrilogy.com forums
in regards to the new trend of the FAN EDITING of existing films, so I figured
this release would be a welcome addition to the torrent/newsgroup collection.

Word to the Spookies?

Rikter

And now another fine ass DVD from the Blaksvn Collection...

STAR TREK Phase II ?In Thy Image?
based upon Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

In the fall of 1977, Star Trek was poised for a comeback. After being cancelled
in 1969, a revival of the series called Star Trek Phase II was planned to begin
airing in the fall of 1978 on the then proposed 4th network, The Paramount
Network. Sets and props were constructed, screen tests done and several scripts
developed including ?In Thy Image?, the proposed pilot. The ship was being
updated and all but one original cast member, Leonard Nimoy (Spock), had signed
on when Paramount pulled the plug. Seeing the success of the previous year?s
blockbuster ?Star Wars?, the new Trek show was cancelled in favor of creating
Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Now, more than 20 years later, Star Trek has released a total of 10 films, and
has spawned 4 spin-off series ? over 700 hours of storytelling. But had it not
been for Star Wars, we would not have the Trek we know today. Had Star Wars not
forced Paramount to go with a movie, there would have been no Next Generation,
Deep Space Nine, Voyager or Enterprise. Most likely the show would have run for
5 years, then been relegated to syndication, thus ending Trek for good.

With over 700 hours of stories, there?s bound to be a few adventures that don?t
hit home with the fans. For many this describes Star Trek V: The Final
Frontier. But for me, I found Trek V to be the movie that most reminded me of
the original series with which I had grown up. So, to showcase what I believe
to be a very underrated film, I offer this remixed version called: Star Trek
Phase II ?In Thy Image? ? the re-imagined pilot episode of the Lost Trek series.

This remixed version of Trek V runs 63 minutes (the same runtime as the original
pilot, ?The Cage?). The story is broken up into the traditional Trek format of
a teaser and five acts. Also, the storyline has been altered, removing those
things fans found most objectionable like a certain Vulcan?s new half brother or
a turbolift shaft that travels through 78 decks (when we KNOW the ship only has
21 decks total!!)

The music score has been enhanced with music from the original series, as well
as many classic sound effects such as the bridge ambient noise, the planet
background sounds and other effects having been added. In addition, several
special effects have been replaced.

So, forget what you know about Star Trek. Imagine turning the dial (manually)
to September of 1978 to the premiere of the new Trek show. There?s a new ship,
the 1701-A, the familiar crew, albeit older and wiser, and when it?s over you
realize that this IS Star Trek. An alien convinces a crazy Vulcan that he?s
?God?? Crazy Vulcan in turn hijacks the Enterprise and heads for the center of
the galaxy with Kirk and company in tow? Kirk stands toe to toe with said alien
and kicks his ass? Sounds like an original series episode to me!

Enjoy and remember, this is provided as a collector?s oddity only. If you buy
it or sell it you?re BREAKING THE LAW. Star Trek is owned by Paramount Pictures
and no infringement is intended.

Live Long!

Wait, NTSC? Gotta check if there are seeders.

Edit: Sweet, it's active. I'll update the review after I get to see this version. Hopefully there'll be some A/V quality improvements.

The picture quality of the original, NTSC, version still isn't what you'd expect from DVD. But the sound mix is very good.

I quit lurking, at OT, because I had it from Jack Marshall's original newsgroup post. So I usually keep it seeded, (JSudonim) for sentimental reasons. :) Speaking of which, I'd better increase my upload speed, huh?

The PAL version had a different theme, huh? Interesting. Was it from Trekminal?

Ah... I see... I have to read the topic, while logged in, in order to keep getting reply notifications. I leave a not-logged-in page up all the time, on the LCD...

Pauley, you bet. But you may have to remind me when, uh, if I forget.

Rikter made 4 sets of covers (cover & disc art).

The art is in the ISO, if you ever complete it. I'd offer to snail-mail you the disc, but it could be a while before I did. It's going up on Rapidshare, if its not already there. And for "could be...", read "would be forever". :)

I agree, you'd think this would have been built from TMP, but since Phase II is technically a series I suppose TMP still could be made into the pilot.

At least that was my plan. But I haven't felt much like editing lately. Besides, I doubt I have the skill to match the look set by this brilliant editor.

I ahven't seen this yet, but I'm dying to. Currently downloading it now. Ever think of doing the same thing to Insurrction? I always thought that the beginning after Data phasers the invisible platform would be the perfect place to end the opening teaser.
