OPEN QUESTION:

Should I submit under Preservation or Fanedit? Ultimately, there is a lot more work in this than I envisaged and there are many narrative tweaks, improvements and micro changes (like Vegas, subtitles, etc) , Plus, this would be a preservation (such as the Amadeus Theatrical Preservation) if this existed anywhere else; but it does not, so I'm leaning on Fanedit submission overall.

Any views?

I think you're right that this has to be a fan edit by virtue not just of how much effort, thought, and work went into it (not that preservations can't be a lot of work, mind) but also by the simple fact that this version has never existed before. You have created this version certainly guided by previous works, but fundamentally as a new interpretation of the source material - and that's really what a fan edit is, right?

Have you thought of the 'FanFix' option as a home for Magnum Opus. When you read your posts you have fixed a lot of things that were just off. Scenes, subtitles, establishing shots etc.....Just a thought.

That could work too too...but there are scenes which were moved (but not as a creative decision but to match certain versions), shot replacements, hybrid sections using alternate takes, sound track blemding across versions, some score replacement (near like for like) and so much more....I'll ask when I submit...the whole thing is a mega hybrid conceptually: a " Fan-fix, preservation, reconstruction fan-edit..... "

BONUS VIDEO:

As promised, here is the missing scene from The Godfather Saga AND a glimpse of the huge 10 hour file I created to view ALL VERSIONS at the same time, each chopped up, scene for scene, and where needed, shot for shot. INVALUABLE time saving reference....(though it took a while to build)

Enjoy!!!

I've done that for my Hobbit Edit, Superman, BLADERUNNER...and EpIV to compare Adywan's With HArmy despecialised, the special edition and Theatrical print...go figure...OH and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which was actually shot in CinemaScope and Normal Wide, with two cameras AND different setups and staging....fascinating stuff....

Fascinating Stuff is spot on.. There something a little hypnotic looking at the four images, studying closely and comparing...

AVALANCHE:

So, I go and delete old master files which are no longer needed, only to realize when I go to render FILM 2 (having tweaked a few things), that one of those files was my MASTER SOURCE for La Fine which is the second half of FILM 2....which would explain why my re-renders of FILM 2 (post more micro-tweaking) were coming up 25GB smaller than expected. IDIOT!

Not the end of the world, since I had not done the pristine job on La Fine Credits as I had on FILMS 1 & 2, so I would have had to re-do La Fine anyway. Plus, when I do a fanedit, I render two versions. One for all of you, and one for me that has tiny markers in the lower right which tell me what I changed. So if I changed the music, a small "M" appears. If it is from the Director's Cut or Theatrical Cut a small "DC" or "TC" appear. So that was pending.

So all 3 films have been re-rendered post many micro tweaks. FILM 1 will be submitted formally today.

As much as I love to do trailers, these will not have any. I'd like to keep any external noise on this one to a minimum. The last time I got spooked I went AWOL for 6 years. On that note, once FILM 1 is submitted, I will reluctantly take down all the video from YouTube and move them to Mega. Although they are not public, again, there is the kind of noise I dislike, plus you will be able to download them from Mega too....soon

AMAZING NEWS:

I FOUND THE KAY AT THE GATES SCENE IN HD for Opus 2/FILM 2 !!!!
Plus a slightly longer exit from Anthony's room....
Years planning this, and then this pops up...

Story to follow.

Needless to say, I will quickly update the file accordingly.

Wow...Miracle Original Bedtime scene in HD

So it turns out I do have the Kay scene in HD....I finished watching Film 2, and there it was.

The reason I thought it was missing is due to the 4way comparison I made....

Anyone who has done this knows how painfully tedious it can be, and this is a 10 HR X 4 endeavour. The issue is I chose to compare AMC, theatrical, extended plus one more. Now, that last slot got filled by trilogy, which is the longest official version, but only in SD. In fact, there are two other versions...Epic and Safgq, Saga being a trimmed version of Epic. Amazingly I do have Epic in HD, but it is only GF part 1 and 2, and since it is shorter than trilogy, I assumed it had nothing to offer.....

So when I made the 4 way, Kay leaving was moved in Trilogy, and stood out, so I assumed it was missing in the other 3. Later, when it appears in the other 3 versions, I assumed that this was another scene (due to scrubbing at speed) and didn't realise the scene was moved.

So, lesson learnt. So I dug up the HD epic and dropped it into the 4-way, and what did I find.... Michael puts Anthony to bed, and the dialogue is different. It was shot to be prior to the incident. He asks, "are you having trouble sleeping". In the theatrical you can hear the dialogue is looped to be " everything's going to be alright Anthony" . More so, Anthony asks his dad did you get my present, Michael says no, Anthony says I left it on your pillow. In the theatrical, Anthony's line is cut, and Michaels is looped to be " yea, I found it on my pillow, " with his back to the camera. Anthony's missing line is delivered to camera. Case rests.

Also, we see Michael leave the room, which is in no other version. This solves a big issue for me in the transition I made, which although I was happy with it, I will revise with this new version of that scene since the music into and out of it also is better.

I will revise film 2 accordingly prior to submission.

I will now check Epic in full, in case another gem is hiding.

Woohoo.

Notice in my first post, I ignore Epic, coz I thought it had nothing to offer....I'm an idiot, since I have it in HD, and should have double checked...especially since I also refer to it repeatedly...

BIG UPDATE LATER:

Original dialogue and extended bed scene with Michael and Anthony PRE_INCIDENT with original dialogue located in a version that was NOT part of my 4-way comparison.

I will post BOTH versions as is but NOT the fix, to prevent spoilers, but will explain how it was a HUGE help and adds another 25 secs to FILM 2.

This fix is now rendering for a weekend submission of FILM 2....

IMHO:

Per the above posts, at the bottom is the scene in question which IMHO proves that that at the very least, this scene definitely is now placed in the correct place and at the post, is strong supporting evidence of how the non-linear Theatrical version of Godfather Part II came about.

Astonishingly, I had a download on an external drive from years ago of the The Epic in HD. I also have the The Epic on VHS, and it is NOT the same. This download version seems to e a hybrid of the the Novel for TV that was screened in the UK (in SD) and The Epic. The run time matches The Epic but the on screen titles are a "A Novel for Television: The Godfather Epic Saga 1901-1959". So ...Parts 1 & 2 only. Now, this is very odd. The Novel for TV, including AMC's reworking does not have the secondary title. I've checked my off air recording of the Novel for TV, and it does not Either. Saga is Saga, which is Epic cut down, so we can ignore that VHS atrocity. But this IS the Epic, and in HD....There are no on screen identifiers, nothing that indicates it is a fanedit, and I can recall where in hell i got this from, but I have it. Result! And now that scene has been added BACK into the edit with the full audio.

I am annoyed that I did not realize that I do have the audio elsewhere in SD, and I could have re-done the scene to include it, but now I do not have. PLUS, it has given me a better transition too. How so, read on.

As I said previously, this transition from Michael saying goodnight, to entering the room with Kay was VERY hard to pull off. Once I finally decided to use the audio from AMC, which transitions to Young Vito that music, I had to time the music to end as Michael picks up the drawing. To that, I had to rebuild all the ambient audio. NOw, I have a different music cue, which is about 15 secs shorter. That is good, coz the musical transition now is not back to back. That aspect of my version bothered me EVEN when I polished it. This music cue ends earlier and is also tonally perfect...as it should be coz the filmakers put it there when they made The Epic....However, there is no ambient audio underlying that music cue. But the materail also has Michael leaving Anthony's room, which is not in any other version. This actually works PERFECTLY coz I already rebuilt the ambient audio for my fix. Further, I had to slow down the music cue I used, and it was not an ideal solution frankly.

So....here are the two versions of the scene, unaltered.

Enjoy

Another find on THE EPIC HD version is the Vegas transition is LONGER!!!

You may recall that there were four things I addressed

1 - The Trees that appear briefly at the beginning of the crossfade
2 - The stationary frames on the second crossfade
3 - Replaced Patti Page with Fran Sinatra marquee
4 - The music timing

Well, The Epic shows the hotel in question that leads to seeing the trees. My guess, is that the hotel objected to being associted with The Gidfather, and so subsequent versions just extended that black fade in. THAT is what led to the music timing issue. The music starts for near on 3 secs, and no images. That led me to the fix.

Tomorrow I will post this new find BUT I will retain my version of the transition coz I love having Sinatra on the marquee.

If you would prefer the original (now that I have is in full), let me know.

I can retain the old original fade in AND Sinatra by replacing my first new shot of The Dune with the original hotel, then Sinatra....

Will test...and let ya'll know....tomorrow
