A television series based on the character of Hannibal Lecter is reportedly in development thanks to French studio Gaumont.

"Hannibal" is a one-hour drama written by Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies," "Dead Like Me") that essentially serves as a prequel to the Hannibal Lecter films.

Expanding upon the early events alluded to in Thomas Harris' novel "Red Dragon", the story will be set in Lecter's early days and the time he went head-to-head with FBI agent Will Graham (Manhunter, Red Dragon).

Martha De Laurentiis ("Hannibal Rising," "Red Dragon") will produce the show.
Casting has yet to begin.

What do you guys think about it (especially you, boon)?
It's neither good nor bad news to me. I like everything what is connected to dr. Lecter's world but after some weak sequels and bad direction of the Hannibal's character I'm not so sure. And Hopkins probably won't return (he has a retirement from this role; in addition he’s too old now). But it seems it will be more psychological show.
We will see...

Well, I think that even the pilot of this one will never be aired. Hannibal Rising already showed clearly that Lecter without Hopkins is not an easy sell. A TV show needs a constantly growing fan base and with a concept that offers no surprises (we all know who Lecter is and all the already answered (but never asked) questions were revealed) I simply cannot see anything of suspense coming from it. Suspense is what made SOTL such a great movie, suspense is what Hannibal lacked, what Red Dragon lacked even more by putting the spotlight on HL and what Hannibal Rising unfortunately never had. HL has been de-mystified. Probably no one cares to know further details.

Bryan Fuller's television shows are GREAT entertainment! But they have a bad habit of getting cancelled early. Like Joss Whedon.

Of course, you have right, boon, but...
Success of the show depends on it if they make Graham-Lecter relationship as a main story or background story.
In SOTL Clarice-Hannibal thread was amazing background story but we were more concentrated on Buffalo Bill case.
In my opinion, the series should be more concentrated on Graham's investigation than Lecter character (only psychological game between them would be interesting).

In Red Dragon there was way too much Lecter and it looked like it wasn't movie about Graham and Dolarhyde but about Hannibal (thanks boom for great fanedit). If they do that, they will create more suspense.

P.S: I think I would like to see Hannibal sequel in SOTL spirit instead, because I was very unsatisfied with movie, very-weak-possible-sequel ending.

I have no longer interest in Hannibal, at least until they get rid of that "he only eats the rude" antihero crap.

I think that a show concentrating on the hunt/detective work will be worth the watch. Quite fond of Fuller's stuff, interested in seeing where he's going with this.

Bryan Fuller is the only reason I would even be considering watching this.

Ok, it's time for news:

NBC announced that Hugh Dancy will play Will Graham in the upcoming "Hannibal" TV series.

THR is now reporting that the network has found an actor to play Hannibal, and it's Mads Mikkelsen, who is best known for playing the villain in "Casino Royale" and is now set to play the villain in "Thor 2."

NBC has already ordered the first thirteen episodes. David Slade is to direct the first episode.

Mads Mikkelsen is an interesting choice, but as others haev said do we really need a show set between Hannibal Rising and Red Dragon?

IMO it won't be the same without Anthony Hopkins. They should haev left it alone after Red Dragon came out. The special thing about SOTL was that again as others have said that Hannibal was not in it much, much like Yoda in the OT. If Lucas had made it so that he had fleeting appearences in the PT he would not feel so watered down now IMO.

Well, the first episode aired yesterday and both rantings and reviews are really high.

This show appears to take place before Will Graham captures Hannibal Lecter prior to the events of Red Dragon but in modern times. Therefore, this is a new continuity.

But last night we got the first glimpse at the "real " Hannibal.

Yeah, I wonder if the show can work as a TV-to-Movie fanedit. Let's wait until the show is over:D

Watched the first three episodes and it took twice as long as the run time to do it, as I kept falling asleep. Never been so bored during a TV show. Seriously. Had to give up. A show should keep you awake and glued to the screen and Hannibal did the opposite for me.

Interesting Metro, I've really enjoyed it so far. Seems like a cross between CSI and dexter, but the hook for me is the relationship between Will and Hannibal.

I think it's very entertaining, and quite clever. Much, much better than that terrible The Following crap.

Could not agree more with you emphatic on that one. In a completely different league in my opinion.

So, now that the season has concluded, I really think this could be edited down to be about Hannibal's hidden agenda to see what'll happen to Will as his condition worsens. Most of the "food preparation" scenes are short enough to keep and many of the cases in the season (like the missing FBI agent) aren't needed to get a comprehensive story IMHO. Only the murders that are used for the frame job would be needed to "flesh out" the story. I think it could be a very compelling watch actually.

The show is over now and the season 2 is coming next year.
I must admit that while I've enjoyed "Minnesota shrike" and "Chesapeake ripper" plotlines I was bored with case-of-the-week killers - the murders were over-the-top and far-fetched.
I loved the performance of Mads Mikkelsen whose Hannibal is a pure evil, calculated villain of whom we don't know nothing (and not an antihero with revealed past as it was in Hannibal and Hannibal Rising).

Bryan Fuller stated that there will be new seasons: "In the first season we have this weird romance between Will and Hannibal, season two is the nasty break up and the third season would have a fugitive angle to it, the fourth season would be 'Red Dragon,' the fifth season would be in the realm of 'Silence Of The Lambs,' the sixth season would be 'Hannibal.
I'm curious about the realm of Silence of the Lambs. :)

Speaking of fanedit, it would be nice to focus only on "Minnesota shrike" and "Chesapeake ripper" plotlines with unneeded threads and dialogs removed and make it fit to the Lecter’s canon.

Emphatic, do you have any other ideas what could be changed or edited? The problem would be with the credits that appear at the beginning of every episode.
