Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning The Final Cut

Original Title: Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning
Genre: Horror
Fanedit Type: FanFix
Original Release Date: March 22, 1985
Original Running Time: 92 Mins.
Fanedit Release Date: TBA
Fanedit Running Time: 86 Mins.
Time Cut: 6 Mins.
Time Added: N/A

Brief Synopsis: The fifth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise follows a teenage Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd), who still suffers from nightmares of the mass murderer Jason Voorhees—whom he killed as a child—and is institutionalized at a halfway house near Crystal Lake. However, Tommy has to face his fears when a new hockey-masked killer begins another series of violent murders.

Intention: After purchasing the Friday the 13th Deluxe Edition boxset from Scream Factory and marathoning the entire franchise in three days while in quarantine and fighting off Coronavirus, one film in the series stood out the most to me and that was Part 5. Part 5 is so different from the rest of the series that I wasn't completely sure how to feel about it, and giving it another watch recently, I realized that I was meh about it: I didn't love it but I didn't hate it like most of the franchise fans do. When I realized that, I had it in my mind that I was going to create my own personal version of the film to enjoy for future viewing.

Trimming away some of the film's sleaze, a conversation contradicted by the next film in the series, a few nips and tucks, and creating a new ending via more trimming, I managed to create a version of Part 5 that I could actually enjoy. Pleased with how it turned out, I decided to share it with you all here.

Additional Note(s): Additional color correction was done on top of Scream Factory's color correction to give the film an HDR-like look. There will be a Non-"HDR" version made available in the very near future. 5.1 and 2.0 audio included in final release.

Source(s): Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning Blu-Ray (from the Scream Factory Friday the 13th Collection)
Friday the 13th: A New Beginning soundtrack by Harry Manfredini

Excellent... This sounds cool. I did a more extreme edit a few years back whereby i tried to give Part 5 the feel and look of The Final Chapter... But yours sounds like a really cool cutlist.

Here's mine if you're interested at all...

Good luck!

Thanks! Oh, interesting! I'll definitely be checking it out.

Here are screencaps of the color correction I did:

Good stuff... I really like the colour grading - as you say, gives it a HDR style effect.

Thanks, LS! I was hoping I nailed it and I'm glad to see that I have.

While I'm at it, I have disc art for BD.

BD cover is now complete.

Nice work... I really need to get a blu-ray writer drive, as I still only have a read drive right now.  Wouldn't mind building up a collection of fanedit blu rays at some point ;)

Thanks, LS! I gotta find a good DVD/Blu-Ray authoring program and learn how to use it so I can finally start putting edits on nice looking discs.

Also, sorry for the silence on this for a while, I’ve been working on a B&W conversion of this for anyone who might interested in seeing such.

I'm actually a big fan of Part 5. And not in a post-modern ironic way either. I genuinely think its alot of fun. Admittedly, it was one of the 1st F13 movies I saw as a kid, so there's definetly nostalgia there.

That said, cutting the "sleaze" out of a Friday the 13th movie? That sounds counter-intuitive to what the franchise is.
It's your edit, so more power to you and it looks like you've done a great job with the color correction. I suppose I loathe the day when fanedits become a tool for people to "sanitize" older films that don't fit our *current year's* politically correct standards. I'm not accusing you of doing this, but it feels like its inevitable. Oh well, best of luck with your edit!

Been a few months since the last update here. Sent the most recent workprint off to reviewed recently and I hope to hear back about it soon. Updated the first cover I made for this with the current runtime and made a second cover for anyone who wanted alternate art for the edit.
