The 12th James Bond film is a favorite of mine. After the silly Moonraker, the film makers decided it was time to return to a more serious tone, with a traditional spy plot. The film mostly succeeds, but there are a few missteps that have always bothered me. My goal is to make FYEO a more “classic” Bond film.
The big idea is to tighten the film in nearly every scene, remove silly stuff entirely and replace the Bill Conti score with classic John Barry music from other Bond films.

the editing of scenes was a big process, but the music replacement is by far the biggest undertaking. There a too many changes to list them ALL. the trims and changes number in the thousands. The music editing and placement is extensive. Hardcore fans are sure to recognize some music from other films, but a casual fan might assume the music was scored especially for this film. It just... sounds like James Bond music. :) Its all timed to work perfectly with dramatic moments within the film. I'm quite proud of the work Ive done.

FE.ORG ACADEMY REVIEW

"Here is my Academy review of "For Your Eyes Only: 007 Cut":

'For your Eyes Only' is one of my top-5 Bond movies, it's one of the few that does a near-perfect balancing act between serious and fun (plus Melina is the strongest and best ever Bond girl ever IMO). It has a few moments of silliness though and while I do love the Bill Conti synth score (he has done some beautiful scores), I have always wondered what a more traditional Bond score would be like. nostromo777 has made the dreams of everybody who has wanted a fanedit of FYEO, come true. The re-scoring is better than even my wildest dreams. I thought I'd miss some moments but even beautiful pieces of scoring from Conti such as when Melina's theme plays (after her parents are murdered) are replaced with a Barry passage so similar in tone and feel that I was amazed. The moment when Bond says "You left this with Ferrara I believe" and then you add a slow arrangement of the Bond theme, was so, so cool (I had to rewind and enjoy that moment quite a few times!). Where did you find that new piece of beautiful piano for the end scene, genius! At many points, I found myself forgetting that the score had been replaced (which I mean as a compliment) because you replaced it with pieces so natural to the scenes. "

6/28/18 UPDATED CHANGELIST

there a too many changes to list them ALL. the trims and changes number in the thousands. here is a broad overview.

  • UA/MGM LOGO. replaced with 1981 UA logo
  • Original pre-credits opening with graveside scene and helicopter removed. new opening is the sinking of St. Georges, murder of the Havelocs ( note, i did a re-edit of the original opening, with new music, but decided to remove it. its available as a standalone extra)
  • opening title/song re-synced and pitch corrected with the original album version Sheena Easton’s song

  • hockey player attack removed
  • submarine attack removed

Welcome to the forum. This is also one of my favourite Bond films and Melina is maybe the best Bond-girl IMO but yes it has some missteps.

From your cutlist it sounds like nothing is left?

not sure what you mean.  the only major action scenes removed are
-opening helicoptor scene: has no implication to the rest of the film
-submarine attack; redundant after the attack in the boat.
- motorcycle attack of melina:  silly way of scaring/killing Melina.
- hockey attack:  again, this is a silly way of killing/ scaring Bond.  also, the stupid gag with the goalie buzzer

the final cut is something like this:

SPOILERS below

cold open is the sinking of the st georges, followed by the murder of the havelocs.
opening song
Bond at Mi6 getting mission briefing
Bond in spain, murder of gonzales, melina and bond escape; car chase through orchards
Bond returns to MI6,  ID's  Locke.
Bond arrives in italy, meets Ferrara, then Kristatos.
Bond encounters melina, sends her away
ski chase
Ferrara murdered
Casino scene and Countess scene
Countess murdered
Bond abducted to Columbos boat
Bond and Columbo siege on Greek warehouse
Bond arrives in Greece
Bond and melina retrieve the ATAC machine
underwater attack in the st georges
bond and melina keelhauled
bond travels to st cyrils
siege on St Cyrils
finale
credits

Ah I see that's much clearer, thank you. So you've cut only parts of those sequences, not the whole things. e.g. (If I understand you) The underwater attack by the diving suit dude is still there, but not the 2nd attack by the mini-sub from that same sequence? That sort of thing. So the "Amore. Amore" sleigh-ride scene is still there but not the bike attack from that snow sequence?(Love that sleigh-ride scene and the romantic music too, so it'll be interesting to see if John Barry can do better ;) .

Is Bibi's role trimmed at all?

No but it's always worth asking if you aren't sure.

Submitted to the ifdb Academy + Finished = Pending Approval

This is neither. When it's 100% finished you need to submit this for review and somebody will give it a watch to check it's okay. This is the right forum for now.

By the way, I just noticed that these "The 007 Dossier" guys have fan-captured some FYEO 16mm trailers on youetube. The film looks great on grainy film and in HD. Might make a good grade reference...

Thanks for all that info. Yes youre right about the cuts i made.

The Trailer is amusing. Interesting to see daytime scenes, that were ultimately day-for-night in the movie.

Bibi is still there,  but i have trimmed her overt propositioning of Bond.  Shes just flirty in my cut.

I think the Barry score is a massive improvement,  and perhaps the biggest reason i undertook this project

another thought.... borrowing from other Bond scores is something John Barry did himself...  in Moonraker, he replays From Russia With Love music... in OHMSS, he replays Thunderball music.

Id like to think this is what would happen if John Barry just carried similar motifs accross the whole Bond series...  like Star Wars does with Leia's theme, Luke's theme,  the force theme, etc.

Anytime a Bond movie has an underwater scene,  you use Thunderball music.  anytime there is skiiing, use OHMSS music, etc.

Im not saying a followed that rule.... just something i tried to implement as much as possible.

I tried to avoid using music where the title track is obviously used.  i didnt want the audience to be humming "Goldfinger" as he drove his car,   but there are a few instances where the music i used does follow the tune of a title song.  John Barry always incorperated the title song into his compositions, so its a bit unavoidable.

If this edit is met with a positive reaction, I may tackle  The Spy Who Love Me next.

I would prefer to see Bibi cut almost entirely, but other than that, your cut list looks good.

Lowry did some major tinkering with the color for the Ultimate Edition DVD / Blu-ray. The car kicking scene for example was changed from day to night. Check the Special Edition DVD to see original colors.

Eh, not really. Barry would recycle a melody sometimes (e.g. his Mary Queen of Scots theme was repurposed for a scene in Diamonds Are Forever), but he never outright repeated tracks. The FRWL music used in MR is the "007 Theme," which Barry recorded unique versions of for FRWL, TB, YOLT, DAF and MR. And the '62 Bond theme recording is used a few times after its first appearance in Dr. No, but that was a choice made by the editors, who Barry disagreed with. That's about it. There is no Thunderball music in OHMSS (unless you're talking about the excerpts from previous scores when Bond goes through his mementos from the older movies).

yeah, i dont think removing her completely is possible. i  otherwise you would have to delete the final scene which reveals that Columbo is not dead.

i had those DVDs, and remember that scene was brighter.   i always assumed it was a heavily overcast day or dawn.   regardless,  i lke the way it looks on the bluray.   im not trying to restore it to original theatrical appearance.   this is all subjective preference.

yes, i realize he wasnt fully recycling tracks... each score was a new unique recording, and he homage'd previous movies.    regarding OHMSS, yes, im referring to the  mementos scene.

I'm looking foward to this. But I would have liked if you had replaced the Sheena Easton theme song, with the rejected Blondie version.

I experimented with that.  I prefer the Sheena Easton song, personally.

i love Blondie,  but that song feels like a demo... waiting to have John Barry add accompanying orchestra.
