Here is my Academy review of "For Your Eyes Only: 007 Cut":

'For your Eyes Only' is one of my top-5 Bond movies, it's one of the few that does a near-perfect balancing act between serious and fun (plus Melina is the strongest and best ever Bond girl ever IMO). It has a few moments of silliness though and while I do love the Bill Conti synth score (he has done some beautiful scores), I have always wondered what a more traditional Bond score would be like. @nostromo777 has made the dreams of everybody who has wanted a fanedit of FYEO, come true. The re-scoring is better than even my wildest dreams. I thought I'd miss some moments but even beautiful pieces of scoring from Conti such as when Melina's theme plays (after her parents are murdered) are replaced with a Barry passage so similar in tone and feel that I was amazed. The moment when Bond says "You left this with Ferrara I believe" and then you add a slow arrangement of the Bond theme, was so, so cool (I had to rewind and enjoy that moment quite a few times!). Where did you find that new piece of beautiful piano for the end scene, genius! At many points, I found myself forgetting that the score had been replaced (which I mean as a compliment) because you replaced it with pieces so natural to the scenes.

On the technical front, 1.77GB is unnecessarily small for the 720p file. However it's a very good quality encode for the small file-size. Something under 4GB would yield a more impressive picture quality and less obvious compression. It's totally fine but I'd prefer something sharper for my fanedit collection. There are unfortunately a few moments with small audio glitches, that mean I can't approve this version of the edit (as much as I enjoyed it). Here is a list of the problem areas...

00.30.00 - The zoom in and close-up of the bike wheel looks strange, considering the bikes do not now appear. It's also obvious that Ferrara magically disappears from one shot to the other. A "match cut" that clearly doesn't match is a fanediting no no. Why not simply cut from the closeup of Bond saying "Luigi, I'll see you later", to the shot of Melina hurrying down the street.
00.31.56 - The sleigh-ride music abruptly stops as we hard-cut to Locque. Either have the music naturally end before the cut (by retiming it), or fade the music out slowly after the cut. Switching the music off at the same instant as the cut sounds and looks like a glitch in the video.
01.05.00 - Audio pop glitch as we cut to submarine interior.
01.06.15 - Tiny audio pop as we cut to ship interior.
01.06.59 - Audio glitch as we cut to the first POV from the enemy diver. By the way, wouldn't the first loud hit of the strings on the tension-music be better timed with the clunk when Bond pulls away the "Transmitter with the Thermite Charge"?
01.08.29 - There is a noticeable audio jump here. I think it's where you cut the "James help" line. A little more smoothing and cross-fading should sort that.
01.08.52 - Another audio glitch where you cut some of the underwater scuffle (just before the crash through the glass).
01.09.02 - It's difficult to tell as the music is loud but I think there is another soundFX pop just after the tear in Bond's suit.
01.09.02 - Audio pop as James and Melina are climbing up the submarine (you cut one closeup shot).  I suggest revisiting every audio edit in this submarine sequence because a lot of them seem to be at fault.
01.13.10 - I think I hear another audio pop under the big brass sound on the score. In fact I can hear several pops throughout the whole shark scene.
01.20.04 - This is the most serious problem. As we slowly pan across the ridge, there is a distorted buzzing sound (in just the left speaker I think?). Not sure if this is an audio glitch, or some misplaced soundFX but it's not right.

These need to be fixed before I can approve this edit. I suggest not just investigating the audio problems I mention in this list. Try silencing the audio track in your timeline that contains the new score and then re-listening closely to every single audio edit you made. It's possible that the score is partially masking many more audio pops and such like, that I didn't catch.

Now I'll detail some areas that I personally felt could be improved. You don't need to fix/change them, as they aren't technical flaws and just my personal opinion. I won't detail any parts where the scoring or editing is perfect (because that's the vast majority of it. Assume if I don't mention it, I loved it!) but here are some moments of "imperfection" in the edit. Sorry for rambling on a bit :D ...

00.00.00 - The text at the beginning (explaining your intent with the edit) is very long (a minute). I've been criticised before, for having overlong intros to a couple of my edits, so something to think about. I'm sure it could be trimmed carefully and still give the same info. Personally I don't mind because I can just skip past the intro on future viewings.
00.11.36 - Sheena Easton fades out too quickly as we cut to Moneypenny. Is this because you used the movie audio for the song and not a CD or something. This youtube stream of the audio has a beautiful outro that goes on for 17 seconds past the point where your piece ends (yours ends about 02.45 into this clip). Those 17 seconds could be used to really make the climb-down from the song as smooth as silk.

00.15.04 - The music fades too quick as Bond hears the snap of a branch. Could it not have been blended into the next piece of music, which occurs seconds later?
00.17.04 - As the car blows up the new score doesn't "react" in any way, the music continues as if the chase was still on. It's fine but a moment of quiet, a change of pace, or a moment of tension in the music would have sounded more professional.
00.17.25 - The exciting music stops a second too late here for perfect comedy timing, as Bond clocks the 2CV. Still, it's a great improvement over the cheesy sting that originally played.
00.17.45 - Having the chase music play during the conversation between Bond and Melina feels odd. If they are in the immediate level of danger that the exciting re-scoring implies, how have they got time to chat? It should feel like they are chatting because they THINK they have gotten away scott free, then at 00.18.03 they realise they haven't and the music should kick back in.
00.20.04 - The music doesn't really react to the rollover of the 2CV
00.20.10 - I'm hearing "Go backwards qu". It either needs to be "Go backwards quickly", or "Go backwards".
00.20.26 - The Bond theme feels like it comes in too soon here. When Bond slams on the breaks (00.20.29) and makes the other guys crash (like a boss) is when it should play. Now you've got it coming in when the badguy hits center frame, making me feel like he is Bond LOL
00.21.06 - I noticed you sadly cut Bond's "Love a drive in the country don't you??" and Melina laughing at it. That line was a classic "cool under pressure" charming Bond quip and Melina laughing at it suggests she's already warming to Bond. Just my personal preference.
00.21.24 - The end part of the Bond theme comes a second too late here IMO. The end phrase should start precisely as (or just before) we cut to the hapless guys stuck in the tree, not one second after.
00.23.15 - The end of the minister briefing scene feels too abrupt. I had a go at editing it, how about this version with the annoying "mmmm" silenced to just a nod of agreement and the scene finishing more naturally with Bond walking out:

00.24.11 - The "indentigraph" scene is too rushed. A couple more crossfades, and snatches of dialogue would imply the passage of time better. A scene ending as soon as it has begun, is one of those things that can make a film look "fanedited", in a bad way. 01.56 into this scene from Blade Runner is a prime example of how to edit something like this (with lines and video fading across each other)...

00.30.38 - I think the new music during the sleigh-ride is too loud under the dialogue?
00.42.22 - As it cuts from the pin, to the casino exterior, the soundFX change sounds too abrupt. Just a little more smoothing is needed.
00.48.16 - Ideally we should hear a reaction in the score, to the surprise zoom in on Melina.
00.52.30 - I thought the dubbed "Get in" line was muffled and hard to hear, then I checked the original and it's like that there as well. You could still silence the line if you wanted?
00.52.46 - The score rises just at the exact moment Bond says "Goodbye countess", if you shifted the score back, or forward by a second it wouldn't interrupt this line.
00.59.07 - I've always thought the editing was flawed at this point in the film. We see two shots of the ropes being shot out, then a reaction shot of Locque as he suddenly looks up as if the barrels are coming at him, then finally a shot of the back of a man with the same haircut as Locque being crushed by the barrels. This originally made me think Locque had been crushed and caused confusion when he is shown to be unhurt several seconds later. You could move the reaction shot to after the guy is crushed, so it's visually clearer.
01.06.59 - I think removing the audio of the enemy diver's Darth-Vader-Like breathing really lessons the tension of the first long POV shot because now it's not at all clear that we are seeing his POV approaching our heroes (and not just some footage of the boat interior)
01.08.07 - As the enemy diver bursts in, there is a noticeable lack of soundFX until he knocks Bond down, 8 seconds later. It wouldn't take much. A few bubble sounds etc just so we subconsciously know the audio hasn't switched off.
01.16.27 - The fade down of the score as they climb the ladder is noticeably too sudden.
01.25.37 - After the "...one of Kritastos' killers" line, the absence of the Bond theme that originally plays was really felt by me. A rare moment in this edit when I thought "This is nowhere near as good as the original score". The original score feels like it has a little celebration of how awesome Bond is for reaching the top of St. Cyril's alive, the new score just continues the tension music like nothing has been achieved.
01.33.52 - The score while Bond is confronting and talking to Melina is too loud IMO.
01.35.14 - Just after the "...has a new sponsor" line, there is a second of silence underneath the new score. If you extended the helicopter and wind sound a little and faded it out more gradually, it'd go smoother into the transition.
01.36.17 - The move from the quiet piano piece, to the full score sounded abrupt as we cut to the credits. Is there anything that could be done to remix, or re-time this?
01.36.17 - I'm not sure about the new credit music. I miss not having the FYEO theme reprised. There is an instrumental with some fine Spanish Guitar...

...but if you wanted to avoid that 80s sound, did you hear this beautiful just Spanish Guitar style cover...?

Last comment: I think the Blofeld helicopter intro for Bond is one of the greatest shot and edited action sequences of all time. The integration of live-action, model-work and studio footage is blended so well, and Bond is such a badass. I know it's got little to do with the overall plot and I know the way you've removed it is how the movie was originally supposed to start (IIRC) but I am sad it's not here, especially as I'd like to have seen how you rescored it. I've considered doing this kind of edit with FYEO for several years (many here on FE.org have discussed it too) and I'd always planned to keep the helicopter scene for after the titles. Sheena Easton's theme fading over Bond at his wife's grave would have been nice.  Your edit not having this scene would prevent this from forever replacing my FYEO blu-ray (which it otherwise would have). This is of course your edit and you should cut what you want to cut. Obviously you'd want to cut nonsense like the "A Delicatessen in Stainless Steel" line. This person on youtube did a pretty good John Barry rescore but it's lacking the finesse in the soundFX replacement department that I'm sure you would achieve:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8w1IFCCJTM[/video]

Please consider at least making a rescore of this scene a bonus feature for the edit.

Thanks for a great time watching this fanedit and I look forward to watching version 2.0. This may go on to be one of my all-time favourite edits! (Thread moved back to in-the-works for now).

Thanks for all the compliments and notes.  Good catches on all the technical flubs.  Ill fix them ASAP, and release a version 2.0.

Regarding the editing suggestions, ill give them some thought.   on the helicoptor sequence, its full of great stunts, but is otherwise a bit silly.  The premise makes no sense.  If Blofeld wants Bond dead, the helicopter is an odd way to do it.  i realize many Bond films require suspension of disbelief, but this one takes it too far.    However, i may consider making two edits of this. one which retains the original cold open.  I do like the graveyard scene, and the helicopter stunts are amazing. Regarding the youtube edit, the OHMSS callbacks are amazing, but would be lost on the average viewer.

regarding the motorcycles, i like the foreshadowing that shows that the villians are following them, but an attack in broad daylight in a crowded village makes no sense.  the attack on the slopes makes more sense, as they know the cover is blown, and they just  need to Kill him before he gets away.

regarding the opening theme fading out too early, the extended "climb down" was not included in the original theatrical version either...

Regarding the Bond theme playing as he summits St Cyrils, I agree, the music could use a bit of a boost.  i like the suspenseful music I used...  but given that the entire finale of this movie is a bit understated, with no big explosions or stunts (just Bond's fall),  i thought the music should be equally understated to match the tragic wierdness of Kristatos' plan failing.   Surely he realizes his plan has failed, and that MI6 knows about him.  Its odd that Bond didnt  call in for reinforcements,  so i tried to make it feel like the clock is ticking.  Music that acknowledges his achievement, but keeps the suspenseful tone would be good.

Regarding end credits... I wanted to find a instrumental version of the theme, but they all sounded too 80s.  Saxaphones... drums... etc.  perhaps ill make two audio mixes, and allow the viewer to choose.

Please do! and yes the grave scene fits very well with the darker tone of FYEO.

Fair enough. This concept would benefit from a little musical sting of the "dun dun daaaaah" variety to make the threat clearer. However, this moment still must be fixed from a technical standpoint.

I just checked the original version and I see you cut out a couple of seconds of footage which shows Ferrara moving from screen-right in the first shot, to screen-left in the second. With those seconds gone, you are unintentionally implying Ferrara has used a top-secret teleport device issued by Q branch ;) . I can't see why those couple of seconds can't be put back in, fixing the continuity error, still removing the bike attack scene but retaining the bike foreshadowing.

Again, I just checked and you are right about where the music faded down in the original... but the quick fade-out in the original scoring is masked by a cross-fade into the sound of waves. Your version just fades down to silence (and the brief sound of Bond's hat landing). Since I can't suggest any sound (appropriate to Moneypenny's office) that you could cross-fade into, I'd still suggest using that extra musical coda to smooth your version out.

Version 2.0 rendering now.

Technical issues addressed. most of TM2YC's  creative/subjective edits will have to wait for a possible Version 3.

My Academy review of Version2(V2):

The 7gb 1080p encode looks really nice. The complete rescore is genius but V1 had a few rare moments that didn't land emotionally with the footage, V2 solves almost all of those moments. I'm convinced anybody watching this entry in the Bond series in this version first, would not guess that the score had been replaced. Unfortunately there are still a few technical errors that need fixed. V2 is 5.1 which has made some audio issues more obvious, than when they were mixed down to stereo for V1.

Here are the errors that need fixed:

00.02.10 - Big problem here, between the guy going inside the ship and him saying "My watch" at 00.03.07, there is no sound in one or more of the front speakers. The left is 100% silent, maybe the center is too but I didn't check (the rear ones should be checked too). I went back and checked your V1 edit and the problem is there too but since that version was stereo, it is much less noticeable. Presumably the downmix is giving some sort of sound in the left channel masking the error some. (EDIT: HAS BEEN FIXED ALREADY)
00.20.07 - I am still hearing "go backwards qu...", instead of "go backwards", or even "go backwards quickly". I'm sure it just needs the line to end/fade a fraction of a second earlier.
00.24.53 - There is a flash of a few black frames as we cut from the Minister, to Bond driving through the snow.
00.34.38 - Just after the music sting and Bond's pole being shot off and before Bond skies off there is a moment of total silence that sounds very odd. If the music is silent at that point, add in a little wind in the trees, some rustling of clothes, the sound of the Pole flying through the air, the sound of Bond moving in the snow, or anything really to paper over that bit. Film soundscapes are almost never totally silent. Compare with 00.34.21 where Bond is just reaching for his gun and the amount of soundFX that are going on.
00.34.52 - As stuntman Bond is doing that midair twirl there is a loud electronic glitch distortion (just after the music sting). I checked and it was in V1 too but I must have missed it due to the stereo being mixed down.
00.55.34 - Somewhere around the middle the sound becomes out of sync with the video. I wasn't 100%, maybe I was imagining it but I was sure when I saw Colombo slam the two glasses down at this point and sound is maybe a second after.

Here are some general comments good and bad (not stuff that needs fixing, just my opinion). Some pointing out new V2 stuff, some mentioning old V1 stuff:

00.00.00 - Love the tasteful text intro explaining the edit. Classy.
00.11.28 - I really don't like the fade-to-black+crossfade to Moneypenny, it doesn't look very professional. However, I can't fault the improved soundmix technically, so if you are happy with it, that's okay. Also I'm still gutted that the helicopter scene is cut but you know that already :D .
00.17.42 - Having no music between 00.17.42 and 00.18.05 where Bond and Melina are talking sounds just right now. Perfect job.
00.21.25 - The retiming of the music as the villains are in the tree and Bond escapes is also perfect now.
00.24.15 - I personally think the new crossfade during the identigraph scene is worse (it looks "fanedited" in a bad way IMO) but there isn't anything technically wrong with it, so if you are happy with it, that's okay.
00.29.54 - Recut of Luigi/bike shot is also perfect now, as is the new mysterious sounding music cue that times with the pan onto the bike wheel. Great job!
00.33.05 - It occurs to me that the "Don't grow up anymore..." lines to Bibi don't really make any sense with her other scenes cut. It's a minor issue and cutting just those lines would be almost impossible. However, it would be possible to cut from Erich sking away (as Bibi shouts after him), straight to Locque getting in his car and the bikes preparing to attack Bond, then when we go back to Bond he has already left Bibi and is sking round that hill. Just an optional idea?
00.37.58 - The timing of the Bond theme kicking in as he jumps over Erich is so badass!
00.34.50 - It would be nice to fix the colour timing of some of these back projection shots in the edit. A few shots like this aren't even close to matching the location footage. It's bright green! A little regrading would solve it. There are others, this was just one example and one of the worst. Saying that, most of the process-shots in FYEO are very well done, some I really can't tell what is studio and what is location.
00.40.04 - As Erich crashes his bike there is a real lack of "impact" in the soundmx. I don't know if it's because the new score is relatively quiet as he makes contact with the logs, compared to the old score and so the old soundFX are revealed to be "thin". Here is one example of an appropriate sound found by searching for "logs". Combine it with other snow soundfx and you'd have a great impact sound: https://freesound.org/people/Jagadamba/sounds/258041/
00.40.09 - The brief bit of lowkey Bond theme between here and 00.40.33 (as Erich is throwing his bike) is a rare point in the rescore that doesn't feel natural now. It doesn't gel with what is happening on screen IMO. It's not saying "Erich is angry that Bond beat him" to me. After the big brash Bond theme has played during the chase it would be fine to have 30-seconds of no music as a natural break with just the soundFX of Erich's fury before restarting the score as Bond arrives at the Hockey arena.
01.03.51 - Maybe the music cue as we cut to the sub is a bit loud and full-on for this moment? Something more mysterious and less action-orientated would work better.
01.15.48 - I realised you've cut Bond and Melina going for the Scuba tank in the temple, to make the enemy think they are dead. I thought this was a really good moment showing our two heroes outsmarting Kristatos. Not sure why you'd want to cut it?
01.25.29 - I'm still really missing the celebratory Bond theme playing when Bond has reached the top of St. Cyrills. The tension music that plays as Bond gets the lift going is an excellent choice overall but not for this short moment.
01.36.16 - The new black screen as the piano dies away ending is much better and quite beautiful. It could perhaps be black for less time before the credits come in? Might be worth having a third go at perfecting it.

Looking forward to Version3 :) . This is going to be an awesome edit I'm sure.

switching to an "Iris" transition, as ths method is used in other Bond films

ive been messing with this scene, and didnt like anything i tried.  The only way to use the "Blade Runner"  style was to incorporate shots of the horrible identigraph graphics.  If i did that, I may as well leave the scene as originally edited.  Im not sure if anything will be ideal.

00.29.54 - Recut of Luigi/bike shot is also perfect now, as is the new mysterious sounding music cue that times with the pan onto the bike wheel. Great job!

thats an option, but I feel the line makes sense as is.  Its obvious she's a flirt, so the line makes sense to me.

the original mix lacked impact as well, so im going to leave that as-is.

tried that and I dont like it.   i like the low key, as it compliments the absurdity of Eric picking up a motorcycle and throwing it.  Bond knows he has won, and isnt threatened by Eric's  futile attempt of throwing a motorcycle. I considered editing out the motorcycle throw all together, but i decided it was fun to have the bit of comic relief.

01.03.51 - Maybe the music cue as we cut to the sub is a bit loud and full-on for this moment? Something more mysterious and less action-orientated would work better.
I like the music cue, but I agree its too loud at the scene cut.  Ill lower it.

01.15.48 - I realised you've cut Bond and Melina going for the Scuba tank in the temple, to make the enemy think they are dead. I thought this was a really good moment showing our two heroes outsmarting Kristatos. Not sure why you'd want to cut it?
it works without it, and I dont believe it shows them outsmarting.  How were they "smart" enough to leave a full loaded tank in the first place?   I think its more believable that they just stayed out of sight, and that Kristatos just thinks theyre dead.

01.25.29 - I'm still really missing the celebratory Bond theme playing when Bond has reached the top of St. Cyrills. The tension music that plays as Bond gets the lift going is an excellent choice overall but not for this short moment.
Im not sure I agree. I experimented with other music, but couldnt find anything that worked.

01.36.16 - The new black screen as the piano dies away ending is much better and quite beautiful. It could perh
aps be black for less time before the credits come in? Might be worth having a third go at perfecting it.

agreed.  will shorten black screen.

IIRC Melina just happens to leave the Tank in the temple when Bond shows up and surprises her. She outsmarts Kristatos when she remember it was there and quickly realises she could use it to her advantage and save her and Bond's lives by staying down long enough, past the point when Kristatos believes they could possibly still be alive. Without it, we just see Kristatos give up and not bother to confirm they are dead... which to be honest isn't unlike many Bond villains :D .

Either way works okay narratively and technically but I personally prefer the original but it's not my edit.

thats pretty much my reasoning.  they arent down there that long, considering James Bond is skilled at everything, including breath-holding,  and Melina is a skilled diver.  Look how long thy're underwater in the end credits!  ;-)

I've finished watching V3 of this edit and I'm happy to say it's approved. :)

This is one of the best fanedits I've watched. Amazingly smooth and natural rescoring of the whole film, removing all the dated 80s synth music by Bill Conti (that I still loved) and replacing with classic Barry stuff. Rescoring even small scenes is hard to get right, even harder when you're doing the whole movie and yet harder still when you are trying to replicate the feeling of a Bond score. There also lots of small and large trims of some of the nonsense that spoiled this otherwise awesome entry in the Bond series. Highly recommended.

It's approved as it is but I still noted down some suggestions and observations as I watched (if you want a final tweak):

00.11.28 - The new Iris-wipe to Moneypenny is exactly what this transition needed. Looks like a Pro-Bond effect now. Great idea! If I was being picky, the edges of the circle would look better slightly feathered. A 1981 optical effect wouldn't have digitally sharp edges.
00.20.09 - I see you reverted to the original "Go backwards forwards quickly". I think you could've made the edited line work (tricky as it was) but unedited is of course fine too.
00.24.53 - Black frame has been fixed between the minister and Italy/snow shot.
00.34.38 - I think the soundFX as Bond's ski-pole flys off could be a touch louder but it just about works.
00.34.51 - I think the back projection shot that was too green in the original movie, is now too pink in the fanedit but it's no worse. Halfway between the two would be perfect though.
00.34.52 - The new "woosh" soundFX as Bond does the spin ski stunt sounds awesome. Nice work.
00.38.40 - I noticed there is a way-too-green back projection here too (just before Bonds leaps onto the table)
01.01.18 - Just wanted to mention again how cool the Bond theme sounds when he kills Locque. It honestly gives me goosebumps.
01.03.49 - The music sting as we cut to the sub is still sounding too loud to me, especially as it's under Melina's dialogue. It's fine but would sound better mixed slightly lower IMO.
01.25.08 - I already said in PMs but the two retimed music cues as Bond is waving the strike-team up sound spot on now.

- Great having the new bonus isolated score track to enjoy. The overall volume seems much lower than the movie audio though. It's not a major problem but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

I've moved the thread to completed but it could do with renaming, which you can do by editing the OP.

P.S. I still want to see a bonus cut of this fanedit that features the Helicopter sequence rescored and inserted after the title sequence and before Moneypenny. Fingers crossed ;) .
