Over the last week or so, while visiting various pulp facebook sites, I learned Conde Nast is in financial trouble and has pulled IP rights from all other publishers... for example, Dynamite no longer can publish the Shadow.

Apparently this true is for all their IPs, including Doc Savage and The Avenger.

What this fully means, no one really knows or is saying...

Speculation from the company will be closing it doors to going entirely digital to selling off it's various properties...

So if you have been thinking about buying any the newer novels or comics featuring the Shadow, Doc Savage or Avenger, now might be a good time to start scooping them up before they go out print and their price sky rockets.

Hopefully a more direct statement will come from Conde Nast to clear up the matter.  I would hate for these iconic characters to disappear into some legal rights limbo.

Has anybody else heard any related news on this subject?

Alternately, if you're a film studio that has considered making a Doc Savage movie, now may be the perfect time to make Conde Nast an offer. :)
In 1999 Schwarzenegger was scheduled to play the role. More recently Shane Black and The Rock are talking publicly about making a Doc Savage movie. So there is continued interest from Hollywood. Let's hope Conde Nast's hardships aren't only bad news for our pulp heroes.

Does this mean that the Nostalgia Ventures reprints of the Doc Savage and Shadow novels will be going out of print?

If you mean Anthony Tollin's Sanctum Books, yes.  They have to cease publication by Dec 31st.  So they are hurrying to produce 3 mega-sized Shadow volumes before the end of the year.  I think they finished reprinting all the Doc stuff a while back?

There's interest on Shane Black and Dwayne Johnson's part, but not Hollywood's. Sony (which owns the rights) refused to let Shane Black make the movie because he (rightly) insists on setting it in the 1930s, and Sony is afraid that a period piece wouldn't make enough money.

Plus, the project was originally announced when Black was at the top of his clout due to "Iron Man 3" making a billion dollars, and he now has much less clout due to "Predator" being a disaster and being hit with a scandal of sorts when it became public knowledge (due to Olivia Munn making the revelation) that he had hired a registered sex offender to act in the movie without notifying the cast.

Yes, I mean Sanctum Press. They used to go by Nostalgia Ventures at one point (that's the name printed on the spine of at least some of their reprints).

Having to cease publication of Will Murray's new books is bad, but having to cease publication of the originals is far worse.

I think so. Still, the prices are bound to go way up now.

I wonder if this means that the Doc Savage and Shadow audiobooks on Audible are going to be taken down?

I've been doing some research about the upcoming cancellation of Condé Nast-owned pulp reprints (Doc Savage the Shadow, the Spider, etc). After some asking around, I've found out quite a bit of useful information.

All reprints of the original pulps are all going out of print after December 31. Existing copies will still be available for a while, but will probably become rare and expensive before long.

Will Murray's Altus Press novels (such as "Doc Savage: The Sinister Shadow" and "Pat Savage: Six Scarlet Scorpions") are not going out of print. They should remain available for the foreseeable future. That said, whether Murray will be able to publish any new novels that he hasn't already published looks doubtful for the foreseeable future.

If you want to snatch up some copies of the original pulps before they become hard-to-find, there are two places that are selling them dirt-cheap right now.

As part of a special sale, Radio Archives is selling a large number of Doc Savage, Shadow, and Spider double-novel reprints for a mere $5 apiece (instead of the usual $12.95, or, in the case of the Spider, $14,95), as well as $20 bargain packs of 7 books apiece for each character. (In the case of the Spider, the reprints being sold are the older Girasol ones, not the Sanctum Press ones, but the Doc Savage and Shadow reprints reprints are the Sanctum Press ones.) After December 31, Radio Archives will no longer sell any of these novels. This is not due to the Condé Nast situation, but is simply because the owner wants to stop selling books and focus purely on selling audio materials, and has decided to permanently stop selling books at the end of this year.

Doc Savage:

The Shadow:

The Spider (these are the older Girasol reprints, not the newer Sanctum ones):

Bud's Art Books is selling a huge selection of Sanctum Press' Doc Savage and Shadow double-novel reprints for $5.95 apiece (instead of $12.95), and superpacks (each containing four double-novel reprints plus artwork prints) for $24.95 instead of the usual $44.95. This is a special closeout sale, which will continue until all copies are sold out (they will probably sell out sometime in 2020, possibly early in the year).

Doc Savage:

The Shadow:

Another useful tip is that the reason that the Sanctum Press reprints print the novels out of their original order is because Sanctum Press (initially known as Nostalgia Ventures) decided to front-load their reprints with the best novels. So the first 20 or so volumes of Nostalgia Ventures/Sanctum Press reprints for each character tend to contain many of the cream-of-the-crop of that character's stories. In the case of the Shadow, you might want to grab Shadow Superpack #2 if you want all of the volumes pertaining to his origins (which are mostly in later volumes). The first Shadow novel "The Living Shadow" is in Volume 47 (which can be bought by itself or as part of Shadow Superpack #2).

They're not in a separate section, but you can find them using the website's search function. Some of them are called superpacks and others are called multi-packs.

Here's a link to where you can see the search results of all of the ones labeled as superpacks:

https://www.budsartbooks.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Superpack&order=new_web&dir=desc

And here are the multi-packs:

https://www.budsartbooks.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Multi-Pack&order=new_web&dir=desc

"Shadow Multi-Pack 1: 80th Anniversary Edition" features volumes 1-4 of the Sanctum reprints as well as some nifty bonuses. "Shadow Superpack #1" collects the Shadow novels which were the biggest influences on the Batman comics, while "Shadow Superpack #2" features the novels that most heavily deal with the Shadow's origins.

The Doc Savage superpacks feature the original Walter Baumhofer cover art from the pulps, while the multi-packs feature James Bama variant covers from the 1960s Bantam reprints. Many of the individual issues can also be bought with Baumhofer or Bama variant covers.

Volume 14 of the Doc Savage reprints features the first two Doc Savage novels, "The Man of Bronze" and "The Land of Terror", and can be found with either a Baumhofer or Bama cover on Bud's Art Books, both on its own or in "Doc Savage Superpack #2" (with Baumhofer cover) or "Doc Savage Multi-Pack #1 (with Bama cover). Also, keep in mind that volume 13 ("Brand of the Werewolf" and "Fear Cay") features the first appearance of Pat Savage.

The $20 bargain packs on Radio Archives are not "official" packs like the superpacks (they are made up of a selection of seven volumes issues apiece by the owner of Radio Archives), so they don't have art prints or other such extras that the superpacks often do, but they can't be beat for price (about $3 per double-novel reprint, which is about $1.50 per novel).

A few more things that that I forgot to mention:

Radio Archives has a a flat shipping rate per shipment (about $4 where I live, although I'm not sure if it differs by location), as well as a layaway option (you can select to pay by check during checkout, then write "Layaway", and you have up to six months to pay off your order in increments by check or money order). When using layaway, you can either have parts of your order shipped to you incrementally with each payment (which will cost you shipping each time), or wait until you have paid all of it to get it all shipped to you at once (which will save you a lot of money on shipping). If you want to use layaway, you can contact the owner via email or phone (both easy to find on the site), and he will give you the necessary information and let you dictate the terms of the layaway as long as he finds them reasonable.

At Bud's Art Books, the shipping prices vary depending on various factors, and can be seen here:

https://www.budsartbooks.com/customer-service/#shipping

While almost all of the reprints on Radio Archives are on sale for $5, you might notice that a small few are priced $12.95, $24.95, or in the case of the Spider, $14.95. If a Doc Savage or Shadow volume costs $12.95 or a Spider volume costs $14.95, that's because there are only two copies left. If there's a higher price, such as $24.95, that means that there's only one copy left. The Doc Savage and Shadow volumes that only have 1 or 2 copies left on Radio Archives and thus cost more are all available for $5.95 at Bud's Art Books.

2020 is shaping up to be a glorious year for the creations of Edgar Rice Burroughs. Not only is ERB INC. launching an all new connected continuing novel series under the banner THE EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS UNIVERSE, but they are re-releasing the classic Tarzan series with all new cover art by legendary Joe Jusko and new forewords and bonus features. The first four covers were recently released and they are utterly BEAUTIFUL!!!
