Is there a password for that, and if so, can I get it?

I haven't seen the original and I don't own this movie on any format, so this edit is not yet for me. But I wanted to comment on the trailer:

Imho it's an awesome and brilliant trailer, with superb use of music and editing, flow and timing to build up suspense and tension. But only till 1 min 17 seconds, then it ends in a very unsatisfactory way. Such a brilliant trailer needs imho a better ending.

Hmm, I think the trailer is just fine the way it is. Basically the moment you are referring to IS the end of the trailer so-to-speak, since that's when it cuts to title cards.

In any event, sounds to me like the trailer was in fact successful....it left you wanting more! ;-)

This is an awesome edit, so hopefully you will be able to watch it someday. If you liked the first 1:17 of the trailer, you'll love the movie....

I also disagree with NewSpock. I think the trailer works quite well as is. I like how it cuts out where it does.

Hey NewSpock , I'm glad you like the trailer, even if its only the first 1 minute and 17 seconds of it that you enjoyed! As a teaser I think it did it's job but of course, I'm a bit biased ;)

I just wanted to add some things I thought of overnight:
1. This trailer IS the reason why I decided to give this edit a try (but then, I had seen the original -- which I wasn't a huge fan of -- and this trailer certainly peaked my I interest as it clearly demonstrated Gatos' very different approach to the film)
2. I was somewhat amazed that (at least according to the Vimeo date) that the trailer was done a year ago, yet still captured the essence of Gatos' vision for what he wanted to accomplish.
3. In fairness to NewSpock, I can see why the change in style at 1:17 might be off putting to some. but if you watch the movie you would find out that the end of the trailer contains the most (or close to the most) iconic music of the film, AND, via the one line of dialog included, is a perfect way to conclude this trailer. It's the tag line of the movie too. :)

Ultimately, I think trailers are just a way to peak one's interest, and should allow the editor more creative freedom (and perhaps slightly less expectation of technical perfection). For me, when making trailers for my Star Wars movies I certainly took stylistic liberties that I could never use in the actual movies (such as cross fades!). I guess what I'm trying to say is, a trailer/teaser is just that - a very short piece of work intended to spark your interest in the movie itself. As such, IMO, there are no other rules. Again, this is just my own opinion! :)

Ok, since you are all ganging up on me (just kidding... somewhat;-)), I guess I was wrong on this one. Maybe one needs to know the movie to get the sort of ending used for this trailer. Regardless, it's a good trailer either way.

Hey NewSpock, didn't mean for you to feel bad.

You expressed your opinion, and we expressed ours. I think it was all done without any intent of putting anyone down, but since it turned out to be two against one, I can see why you might have felt ganged up upon...I assure you that was not our intent! :)

Like I said in my previous post, I can see why you might not like the ending part of the trailer, as it is an abrupt change in style. No problem, everyone is allowed his or her own opinion! Just be ready to get counter opinions! ;-)

Anyway, I think Gatos appreciated the fact that you watched the trailer, and enjoyed the vast majority of it! :)

NewSpock , you shouldn't feel like we're ganging up on you! You gave your opinions on the trailer in a constructive way, seciors, ThrowgnCpr and I respectfully disagreed ;-).

Also, there's no "right" or "wrong" in art IMO just subjective opinions. So you're not wrong, you're entitled to your opinion as is everyone on here.

*Oops, don't mind me. Had I bothered to read seciors response, I would have seen that he covered everything I had said in his post!

Sorry it took me so long to see this! Here's my review from IFDb:

Intro:

Eyes Wide Shut is one of my all time favorite movies. It's a devastating and surreal journey into the human psyche and the horrific true face of the powerful elite (and the Illuminati?) and their dehumanization of society and the human soul. If the original was one of the greatest achievements in filmmaking, then Gatos' Fidelio Edition is one of the greatest achievements in fanediting. It's quite remarkable how different a film this is with over an hour removed, yet the plot and themes are well thought out and there is not a cut that doesn't work. Definitely one of my new favorite fanedits!

Audio/Visual Quality: 10

The DVD looked pretty great, with the beautiful grain intact and no problems to report. I watched it in 5.1 surround sound and it was pretty immersive. This was just a really excellent presentation!

Visual Editing: 10

If I had watched this cut without ever seeing the original then I wouldn't even notice the missing hour. The only transition that caught my attention was the cut from Bill and Ziegler in the bathroom to Bill entering the hospital the next day. It was a bit jarring and possibly could have worked better with a fade out. Besides that the editing was pretty much perfect.

Audio Editing: 10

I did not hear a single noise out of place, so good job!

Narrative: 9

It's amazing how Gatos has radically altered the narrative and character motivations yet Kubrick's vision is still mostly intact. The most noticeable change was Alice's decreased role, which actually worked very well. She is nothing more than Bill's trophy, just like Milich's daughter and the masked women at the orgy. They are all symbolic prostitutes (is Bill and Alice's daughter on the same path?). The removal of all the sex stuff is well handled and our main focus is now on the mysterious cult made up of the world's most powerful people. The pacing is brisk yet Gatos is still able to build the tension all the way until the shocking ending. The original ends with a deceptively happy ending that shows the dark side of Christmas consumerism and that the protagonists still have their eyes wide shut to all the evil going on around them, while the Fidelio edition ends with Bill finally realizing the true power of the corrupt elite. This was the only way this edit could have ended and it will haunt me for days. My only problem with the narrative is that the final scenes lacked weight, due to the shortened runtime and faster pace. I don't think Gatos could have done anything about this, but it just lacks the power of the original.

Enjoyment: 10

This won't be a replacement disc, but it is a thrilling reinterpretation of Kubrick's final work that really shows all the hard work that was put into it. For fans of Eyes Wide Shut, this is a must see! Thank you very much for sharing Gatos!

Thanks for the kind words BladeRunner391! I'm glad you enjoyed the edit and I appreciate the review!
