One of the editors of BoingBoing.net, Rob Beschizza, decided to try his hand at fanediting some scenes from Lynch's Dune. The link is http://www.boingboing.net/2011/07/17/dune-with-no-dialog.html

Rob writes,

The persistent belief is that something can be made better by adding more; but each thing added must contribute to a coherent, satisfying whole. Wouldn't it be easier to simply remove those elements that made the movie so confusing? (...)

For example: all the words.

Click the pic for the first scene of the movie that is not itself spoken exposition--with all the dialog removed. (...)

I think it's pretty promising! By removing all that talking, we could transmute the 3-hour epic to about 45 minutes of Lynch's imagery, unburdened by the need to make a story out of 650 pages of verbose political maneuvering by people who spend half the book analyzing their own superhuman, chess-like conversations. Instead, loads of robed witches, psychedelic space travel, freaky monsters, and the Toto and Brian Eno soundtrack. Though, actually, I think more Eno than Toto would be for the best.
The comments give shoutouts to FanEdit.org and mention Dune: The Third Stage Edition by PhineasBG & Nighthawks and Dune The Alternative Edition by Spicediver.

Comment: Same applies to porn.

Not for the likes of me, Dune is marvellous the way it is, particularly the Third Stage edit.

EDIT: Comments section is completely hilarious in it's IMDb-bitchery (tm)

It is an interesting concept, but I think it might work better with a little dialogue here and there, kind of like Eraserhead. Some moments of thatr video are quite awkward, like that closeup of Reverend Mother Mohiam opening her mouth like she's about to say something (she actually is, of course).

And yes, count me in as another fan of Dune the film, warts and all.

The idea i find interesting.

It kind of reminds me of the Conan music cut that came out recently here.
Where there is lots of music and sometimes dialogue here and there.

I think there is room for a Dune cut that removes almost all dialogue that can be enjoyable.

Oooh, that's a nice idea, Dwight Fry! Dune - Eraserhead-style. Just keep the strictly necessary dialogue and cut sentences in half whenever possible. Everything else: a silent set design nightmare, in the best possible sense. I'd watch it.
