Best free software for adding vfx?

Hi all. I'm currently using Shotcut for my editing. Not great but it has served me well enough. Problem is I'm getting more advanced with my editing and I want to try my hand at adding VFX to my edits. (Simple stuff for now like masking, tracking and color correction. I'm not ready for 3d modeling or full blown Hollywood CGI.)

Just looking for recommendations on some free software that I can use for practicing. I am interested in stuff like after effects, but I just want to go with the free stuff for now before I make a bigger investment. Thanks so much for your thoughts and have a great day.

There is a lot of crossover between simple/low-level VFX and NLE programs. If Shotcut isn't able to do what you need with its masking functionality, maybe check out a new NLE that can do the VFX you need all under the same roof, so to speak.

If I were using free software only, my choice would probably be DaVinci Resolve. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

Blender has an NLE built in and if you decide to go more advanced with VFX, then it really is a one-stop shop, even if it's a large learning curve. https://www.blender.org/download/

If free isn't a strict requirement, there is a bundle of nice Magix software on Humble Bundle, 25 USDollars for Vegas Pro Edit 18 and some other big programs they offer included. Vegas is very popular among editors on the fanedit forums, perhaps the most popular. https://www.humblebundle.com/software/vegas-pro-2022-software

Wow. An expensive software and a bunch of other stuff for $25?… Is this a legit deal? I may just have to splurge a bit. 😏 Thanks for the tip!
Yep. I've been relying on humble bundle Vegas deals for years.

Is this a legit deal?

Yeah, Humble bundle, in general, seems too good to be true but it's legit. I buy Steam games from them a lot. And I've gotten Vegas from them a few times, they do it once every year or two. Definitely worth it.
