I've not had their Christmas ale, but Delirium Tremens was the first Belgian beer I ever had, and one of the first non-macros I'd ever had. Fine stuff.

I imagine there will be lots of beer drinking for the holidays, mayhap lots of Winter Ales... anyone want to connect on Untappd?

I may or may not have bought more Christmas beers than one should reasonably drink over the Christmas period. This evening's tipple:

We were at our neighbor’s house yesterday to help celebrate their son’s birthday and I split one of these with my neighbor. It was tasty. I do a beer advent calendar every year. II order the beers myself rather than the ones that are pre-made. It’s mostly stouts and porters but a few quads and barley wines too.

This gave me a chuckle. Young people will make fun of you for drinking this in Japan. It's basically the Budweiser of Japan, and regarded as "old man beer". But what they don't know won't hurt them: get your おじいさん (ojiisan) on!

I have an untappd account and used to use it regularly, but I've touched it maybe once in the last couple of years. Mainly due to getting rid of my smartphone, I think... I just never think to use it. I'd connect if it weren't for that, and the fact that the account is in my real name (which I try to avoid giving out).

Not exactly a beer but as an abstainer from alcohol these days - ive never made a good decision on alcohol - i am over the moon at the release of the Black Stuff Guinness 0% here in the UK and you know what it actually tastes good....the only problem is with these alcohol free drinks is it feels like your've gone on a date and didn't get a bit of "how's your father at the end of it" :)

Lol. Well I’m 51 and have been drinking “custom beer” since I was 16. But everyone should drink what they enjoy. I just never enjoyed the Buds of the world.

Got rid of your smartphone? Interesting. How's that going?
I got to where I'd be out enjoying the beer and the conversation and forget to log a beer. So I got into the habit of just every time I drink a craft beer, I take a picture of it (on my smartphone, ha) and then just log it the next day.

Well, hey, I'm not going to yuck another guy's yum. I'd say that if this were the "Ice Cream Appreciation" thread, you'd be like the guy who's really into vanilla ice cream. ;) In fairness, the craft beer scene has been slow-going in many places, and I think if you grew up outside of Europe, the majority of your exposure might have been all lagers until maybe 15 years ago.
5 years ago in Japan, you still had to hunt for craft beer. Suntory (my Japanese lager of choice) comes out with seasonal brews in the convenience stores, like Winter Ales and IPAs, but they're usually very subtle representations of the style, so the average Japanese person doesn't have much craft beer experience either.

Maybe now's a good time to check out some Winter Ales or some darker beers? There's a lot of good ones this time of year @drvrjon and you might like them!

Really well, actually. I thought about doing it for about 2 years and then took the dive some months ago. It takes some figuring practically initially, but I don't ever want to go back. My mental health has benefited from it greatly and I'm a lot more focused.

I used to love untappd for keeping track of what i'd drunk and seeing if my taste changed. Without a smart phone I don't think I will be able to get back into the habit easily, sadly

Good for you. I went completely phoneless for almost a year back in 2010 but I don't think I could do it now. I travel quite a bit and I need the camera/internet combo in my pocket pretty often. But I can totally see the appeal.

^^ I'm not sure where that came from, but what on earth is wrong with meat in a pie? Steak and ale - a very British thing, but a tasty thing.

It was a while ago that I said that, and I think I had a particularly bad beer that provoked that post. I haven't had it yet, but I currently have a cucumber beer of some kind in the fridge that was recommended to me... by The Bruery, I believe. I can imagine Gose would be a fitting style to use cucumber as well.

That doesn't look like steak. I like a good steak. But in a pie? As in Kidney Pie? When I drank beer or alcohol, I liked Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout. That was about thirty years ago...

I've only just clocked that you were referring to a photo I posted a while ago. That wasn't a steak and ale pie - I can't remember what it was exactly, but if I recall correctly it was an excellent meal from someone who specialises in slow-cooking meat. They always source high-quality ingredients (they're also American, so it can't just be a Brit thing to like meat in pies :p ). Also, a good steak pie will often have fat chunks of "proper" steak in it.

Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout is one of my favourite beers, though I had my first drink of one for the first time in a few years just the other day (I'm more focused on trying new things). I also have a couple of other SS beers to try over Christmas. The organic chocolate stout and their festive beer.
