This one had passed me by 'til the other day... a 2019 leaked(?) "proof of concept" for a proposed animated
Judge Dredd show that didn't happen:
Studio AiXA have basically remade the famous bike chase from
Akira, in a seemingly failed attempt to entice the rights holders
Rebellion. It's such a beautiful melding of 3D animation with the feel of hand painted 2D, so if you pause it at any point it looks like a painted comic panel. Amazing work. I'd never thought about the similarities between the world of Dredd from 1977 and the first Akira comic 5-years later (and the film in 1988). The two vertical, hyper violent cities, criss crossed with speeding motorways and plagued by riots and urban warfare. Mega City One built on the ruins of New York and Neo Tokyo built over Tokyo, after both are obliterated in an apocalypse. No wonder Dredd feels so right as a re-skinned Akira.
If any adventurous audio editors want to make a complete soundmix for this ^ then I'll be very happy
.
I'm sure 2000AD had Akira in mind when they did Japanese Judges in the 90s:
Then youtube recommended this afterwards:
EDIT: Oh and I forgot about this 2012 Akira poster homage from the Megazine:
