Main Project Intentions & Info:
This project aims to bring stronger continuity, tighter editing & improved pacing to 6 of the films in the Nightmare on Elm Street movie series.
Many alterations are made to strengthen continuity, remove filler & improve the pacing & atmosphere.
Opening credits are removed & a new "A [directors name] Film" credit has been added to the beginning of each film.
New title logos replace the old title sequences along with new opening title music.
A date has been added after the opening dream scene of each film to give a sense of place in time.
Each film now opens with the classic NoES music cue, Prologue playing over the production logos / director credit & ends with a short post-credits scene
with the classic "Freddy's Coming for You" rhyme. This really ties the room together.

Video:

The original New Line films, (NoES, FR, DW, TDM & NN) are sourced from the 2013 Warner Bros. Nightmare on Elm Street bluray set.
The crossover, Freddy vs. Jason, is sourced from the 2020 Scream Factory Friday the 13th bluray boxset.

Audio:
All films are presented in stereo as the 5.1 mixes just don't sound as natural to me. FvJ has a nice 5.1 mix, but I've kept it stereo for project continuity.
I've enhanced some of the score in the films using the remastered soundtracks from the 2015 Varèse Sarabande CD boxset.

Films Excluded:
I won't be using The Dream Child, Freddy's Dead or the 2010 Remake.
I just don't care for these three films & I have no interest in doing anything with them.
The silliness of The Dream Child & Freddy's Dead cheapens the series overall & the Remake is just terrible.
_________________________________
Release Info:
I've organized the 6 films into two sets of three:

Volume One: The Main Trilogy - A Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream Warriors & The Dream Master
-This trilogy creates the main story with recurring characters & a through-line narrative.

Volume Two: Prequel, Sequel & Beyond - Freddy's Revenge, Freddy vs. Jason & New Nightmare
-These films work as a mid-story prequel, a series sequel & a meta side-story, respectively.

Dividing the series up like this makes sense to me, as the films in Vol.2 are more like side-stories stemming from the trilogy in Vol.1.
Those of you who have the Friday the 13th [raymix] Series will already have my edit of FvJ, but it's only right to include it here as well.

The Changes:
The timeline has been altered to give Nancy a reasonable amount of time to have finished high school & gone on to study psychology between NoES & DW.
The year FR takes place in has been moved back so that it fits into the chronology more easily. TDM's year has been moved forward to match the new timeline.
The new dates are- NoES-1982 FR-1983 DW-1988 TDM-1989
On-screen dates have been added to each film to show their place in time.

The changes are listed in chronological order. If you want to know the hows or whys about anything, feel free to ask. I'd love to talk all about it!

VOLUME ONE: The Main Trilogy
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

1-No-ES-raymix-poster.png

Main Intentions-
Main Intentions:
Aside from tightening up the editing/pacing, my main goal here was to fix the awful original ending. NoES is one of my absolute favorite movies, but, due to studio meddling, the ending falls on it's face.
This edit aims to fix that.

About Some Changes...
About the Ending-
In the original cut, after Nancy turns her back on Freddy & walks away through the door, she exits on the other side with everything seemingly returned to normal, until the car taking Nancy & her friends to school reveals Freddy's stripes & drives away under his control. Freddy's arm then grabs Nancy's mother & pulls her through a door. I've always hated this ending. It's nonsensical, silly & embarrassing.
In my edit, after Nancy walks through the door we cut to "Six Years Later" to find her working at Westin Hills Psych Hospital. She's counseling a teen girl who's having trouble in her dreams. She asks Nancy if the man in her dreams is real, to which Nancy confirms, "He's real..."
This shows that Nancy has turned this horrible incident into a successful career of helping others, creating a more satisfying conclusion, while also creating a stronger bridge to the sequels.

Possible Controversial Changes-
There are a trio of sequential changes that I really struggled with making, as they are absolutely classic Freddy moments. The moments in question are:
-cut Freddy's stretched arms.
-removed Freddy cutting off his fingers.
-cut Freddy's face coming off.
These are undeniably iconic moments, so I feel I should offer some explanation.
I hate to say it, but these three effects shots have not aged well & weren't the best even at their time.
This is our first real look at our villain & these silly moments really cheapen the mood & even the film overall.
Without these moments, the scene is much more frightening & Freddy seems much more ferocious.
His dark humor still shines though due to his dialog & constant cackling.

About Some Changes...
Possible Controversial Changes-
I've removed the Nun telling Neil the story of Amanda Kruger being locked in with the inmates & raped.
This backstory for Freddy is something that some fans like, but I hate the idea that how you're conceived effects how you turn out/who you are.
besides, this backstory has nothing to do with the rest of my series. I got no time for that.

THE DREAM MASTER
3-TDM-raymix-poster.png

Main Intentions-
Main Intentions:
My main goal here was to tighten the editing, remove filler & fix the awful ending.
The original cut sets up a "Face Your Fears & Believe In Yourself" theme, only to ditch it at the end for a bad deus ex machina. This edit aims to fix that.

About Some Changes...
About the Ending-
In the original cut, right at the end, a choir of children appear in the chapel & recite to Alice a rhyme explaining that Freddy can only be defeated by seeing his own reflection. Luckily, there just happens to be a broken mirror at her feet... I've always hated this out of nowhere explanation & the deus ex machina children's choir.
In my edit, Alice defeats Freddy by overcoming her fear. Throughout the movie a big deal is made of Alice's mirror being covered with pictures of her friends because she doesn't want to face herself. As her friends disappear, she removes their pictures, revealing more of herself. Ultimately she faces herself fully in the mirror. She then uses her mirror to enter the Dream World. She then tries using the powers of her friends against Freddy, but to no avail. It's only when she uses her own strength that she's earned during the story that she's able to overcome her fear & defeat Freddy. It's a bit abstract, but that's how dreams are.
Afterwards, Alice sees Freddy's reflection in a fountain & dismisses it.
The point being that you have to face your fears yourself on your own terms. It might be something that never fully goes away, but you can MASTER your fears.
I realize this change may not work for everyone, but it Really works for me.

Main Intentions:
Beyond my normal tightening up of the editing/pacing & giving the film a more consistent tone, I've also removed as much of the 'Haunted House' element as possible, making it easier to tie this one into the continuity of the rest of the series.

This story slots in between NoES & DW in the [raymix] chronology.
I've decided to use it as a mid-series prequel as it has no crossover characters from the the trilogy in Vol.1.

I've given the film a shot-by-shot color correction which removes the awful blue filter & deepens the black levels without crush. This makes the movie more colorful & consistent with the other Nightmare on Elm Street & Friday the 13th films.

WHY SHOULD I TRUST YOU WITH THIS FRANCHISE? ~
a quote from You
I've been a horror fan my entire 41 years of life. I was drawn to horror movies long before I was old enough to watch them & have lived my life soaking in this stuff.
A Nightmare on Elm Street was the first modern horror film I ever saw. I was very young, but my older brother & his friend were watching it's premier on HBO.
They knew I was into monster movies, so they let me watch. I was too young to really follow the story & I had to keep running out of the room because I was too scared. My brother would tell me when it was safe to come back in. This was the event that really hooked me on horror.
I rented all of these films on VHS throughout my teenage years in the 1990's. Then the big DVD boxset in my early 20's (remember that thing? it was awesome!) & then the blu-rays. Documentaries, commentaries, interviews, articles. I've slashed through it all.

All these years after my first encounter, A Nightmare on Elm Street continues to be one of my favorite movies & my absolute favorite horror concept.
These films are packed full of imaginative & iconic moments, characters & dialog. Perfect for screaming, laughing & cheering along with.
I hope these versions will enhance that experience for you. Whether your familiar with the series or dreaming for the first time, I hope you have fun on Elm Street!

Niceness! We've gone a while without a NOES edit. I had intended to take a look at Part 3 to see if I could get the tone closer to the original film (Part 3 was where "funny Freddy" really started, and I much prefer darker Freddy from the first two) but this series-wide approach sounds great!

After this there is the Wrong Turn franchise, the Child's Play franchise, the Puppet Master franchise, the Leprechaun franchise, then you could just go completely Blumhouse...

The Dream Warriors Changelist-
...
About Some Changes...
Possible Controversial Changes-
I've removed the Nun telling Neil the story of Amanda Kruger being locked in with the inmates & raped.
This backstory is something that some fans like, but I hate the idea that how you're conceived effects who you are & besides, this backstory has nothing to do with the rest of my series. I got no time for that.
Thank you for that, this always made me uncomfortable, like they were trying too hard to give him a shocking backstory. I can imagine it'd be much better without this aspect.

I've decided not to wait until next month to drop Vol.2. I've got the films finished & I'm already working on the next project, so might as well keep this train rolling!
Volume Two will be available Sunday, April 17th!

if you had to pick, which is your favorite from your NOES edits? Likewise with your Friday the 13th edits. Life is hectic but I should be able to watch one or two in the next few weeks and thought it would be smart to get the editor’s opinion.

Hooof.... that's tough. Especially for NoES.
I'll respond to F13 in my F13 thread.
The original Nightmare is almost one of my top movies of all time, but I really hate the ending. I've fixed this in my edit, making it absolutely one of my favorite films of all time.
But, then there's my edit of The Dream Master, which also fixes the awful original ending by putting more focus on story related beats & altering the climax to reflect this. (pun. anybody catch it?) My edit is enough to turn a film I've always been lukewarm on, into a film I love.
And THEN there's my edit of Freddy's Revenge. A film I've always had heavy attachment to. My edit slims it right down to it's core, creating a very tight story with a very strong narrative.

So, I guess pick which one sounds the most interesting to you, or the film you like the most.

I had so much fun working on this series, I'm sad to be moving on.
Still many movies I hope to have finished by Halloween, though!

What's your favorite movie from the NoES [raymix] Series?
Lemme know!

I personally think the original Dream Warriors logo is one of the ugliest ever.
